17yr old girl & 18 yr old boy hook up on holiday in Dubai. I believe they may have met over there. The girls mother finds messages on the girls phone when they return to the UK. The mother reports the guy to Dubai police. He gets arrested as sex with anyone under 18yrs is illegal in Dubai. He has now been sentenced to 1 year in prison.

I haven't looked into it much, as far as I can tell it was consensual, a charity called Detained in Dubai have been trying to help (legally I think).

Am I alone in thinking how bloody spiteful the mother is?!? The girl is 17 years old and I think in another report saw that she turned 18 shortly after returning.

We wouldn’t care. A 16 year old and a 15 year old doing what 16 and 15 year olds are doing all over the country? No one goes to prison for that here.

They have a duty to protect their son. Which they have failed to do so. He said in a statement they knew about her but her parents couldn’t know about him.. they know they were in a strict Muslim country and should have familiarised themselves with the local laws. I am quite confident that I would have intervened had this been my son. I don’t think they’re responsible, but I think they should have done better. The woman who reported him is undoubtedly a total b*tch but her culture is her culture and one that is complex.

I’m saying it was very obvious given the girls race and her being open that her parents could not know about the boy. It doesn’t take a genius to figure it out.

People are angry because someone dobbed him in, which has ended up in a jail sentence for him.

There are plenty of people in Dubai breaking this law, just like there are plenty of tourists in the UK breaking drug laws. You would have to be an incredibly motivated and vindictive individual to contact the authorities in another country to report this incident, especially as the girl in this respect was a few weeks shy of it not being illegal.

She has unnecessarily caused another family incredible pain and suffering because she is a straight up bitch angry that her daughter didn't follow her cultural beliefs.

Her parents couldn’t know about him because he was a boy and obviously the potential of them having sex not because he was black.

I have two black boys and you can bet that should we be holidaying in Dubai, and they meet a girl of a Middle Eastern / Asian descent, and she makes it clear that she is LYING to her parents about her whereabouts and that they cannot know about my son… I’m going to assume they’re a) racist b) potentially dangerous. And I’m going to do everything in power to keep my boys far, far away. At least while in dubai anyway where it’s illegal.

I am hopeful that back channel conversations will be held, he will be pardoned by someone high up and home in a few weeks. Maybe for Christmas. That’s what I am very much hoping. He has learnt a very hard lesson here sadly. I do believe that there is racism here. And that racism is coming from the girl’s mother.

You are right in that if this was the case it would change the circumstances. However all the reports I have read say that he was 18.

as in, they weren't the same age when the sex took place but the girl has (as confirmed in the same article) since turned 18.

If you do have any proof to support what you're saying, share it or stop yelling at people that they are wrong without any evidence.

At this point in time, it does seem like she/they reported him out of malice.

But, it is also fair to say that at this point we only have one side of the story.

This boy couldn’t possibly know they were racist at the time and obviously just assumed they were strict. Who knows what has possessed this mother to do this to this poor boy, yes it could possibly be racism but not necessarily so, it could just be its because he’s a boy who has taken their precious daughter’s ‘purity’ away.
