17yr old girl & 18 yr old boy hook up on holiday in Dubai. I believe they may have met over there. The girls mother finds messages on the girls phone when they return to the UK. The mother reports the guy to Dubai police. He gets arrested as sex with anyone under 18yrs is illegal in Dubai. He has now been sentenced to 1 year in prison.

I haven't looked into it much, as far as I can tell it was consensual, a charity called Detained in Dubai have been trying to help (legally I think).

Am I alone in thinking how bloody spiteful the mother is?!? The girl is 17 years old and I think in another report saw that she turned 18 shortly after returning.

I guess the only saving grace is her mother told them when she got home. They would have questioned her daughter. Why did they falsely give evidence saying he was 19 and from Pakistan. If he's 18 then the law is the law why make it up. My guess is he would have been let go.

And no, horny teenagers probably don’t check that kind of thing. But as a parent, if you’re taking a horny teenagers on holiday, would you not have a chat with them in advance? The information about what is legal and what isn’t is available on gov.uk.

Why do people keep getting this wrong

1. Doesn't mean he would follow your teaching... horse to water an all that.
2. Teenagers frequently rebel agains their parents teaching.
3. He did all the due dillegence that teenagers would do... she was in the same year as him at school.

We don't know what Marcus' parents taught him, but they have now had to return to the UK leaving their son in jail. You would have to be incredibly cold hearted and unrealistic to think that they were in any way responsibile for this.

Oh come on, we all know the NT membership includes large amounts of “yummy mummies” wanting to meet up with their friends at the local NT property with their toddlers for a picnic as it’s more “cultured” than the local park.

I am always shocked that ppl visit Dubai. Their human rights record is terrible. You could not pay me enough to go. Ppl say to me it's not like you read, you can X, Y and Z. Until you can't in my opinion then you have a massive problem. Their country Their rules.

Could you imagine the outage there would be if people from the US carried guns in the UK because it’s legal back home? Or 16 year olds from the Isle of Man drove on English motorways? Or is 14 year olds from Mali were getting drunk in London because they can in their country? If you do to another country you should respect their laws, even if you don’t like them and it’s different at home. And they went to Dubai. It’s not exactly known as a bastion of liberality, open mindedness and sexual freedom. Hopefully people who hear about this case will think twice about going on holiday to Dubai (or any other country they don’t want to respect the laws of).
