To throw the Avon catalogue...

I didn't even think Avon still did catalogues but I've just got home to find one through my door and a note saying they'll collect next week.

Person A says just throw it away, it's unsolicited mail.

Person B says just throw it out on the doorstep and let it sit there for a week.

Person C says keep it in and remember to put it out on the day it says it'll be collected.

Which team are you?

@Elphame that's good if they are where you live and that system works.
It's just baffling to me how many people in my hometown and my mother in law's town (both similar medium size midlands towns) claim they "didn't know that festival was happening" because they "didn't see it advertised" and when someone points out it was advertised in the yearly/quarterly/whatever district council magazine that is posted to every home in the district the answer is "oh I don't read that I just chuck it away" 😂

I guess it's casting a net and seeing who will bite
As I said the only Avon reps I knew were people i worked with when I was a nurse and most of their customers were colleagues. Avon was surprisingly popular
But if your a SAHM how else's are you going to get new clients, other than posting them through houses in your neighbourhood?

But casting that net by cold delivering leaflets that have value to you should be a business decision where the losses of that strategy are offset by new sales from your marketing strategy. There are many reasons beyond people being grumpy at having to process a catalogue they wanted why it might not be returned. For around a year both houses next to me were unoccupied so no one would be able to return it. Maybe it’s a demographic issue (I’m the awful millennial referenced upthread) or just totally unfamiliarity with Avon but until I saw it on MN last year I had no idea an Avon rep would want their catalogue back so would have thrown it without a second thought and I’ve asked a few friends and all said they also had no idea anyone would request it back and would also have immediately recycled.

@AlexaSetATimer they must be because animal testing is illegal.
How would they get away with breaking the law?

Animal testing is illegal in the U.K., but the wider Avon company ships into China, where animal testing is mandatory before products are released, so they are not cruelty free.

Not the individual's responsibility when it comes to data protection/unsolicited mail rights.

A sender must take accountability.

A house number and street is not data protected, it stops you getting annoyed and them wasting their time and money …

Needmorelego · 11/12/2024 13:23

@AlexaSetATimer apparently not anymore according to Avon's website.

SpringleDingle · 11/12/2024 13:30

Probably intend to do C but put it on the side and forget about it / partner throws it out / kid cuts it up to do her craft with followed by looking totally dense when the Avon lady calls for it and I can't remember ever seeing it in the first place.

I’m not angry or uptight about it. I only learned last year from MN that Avon catalogues are to be treated differently to other unsolicited mail so may well have thrown in the bin before. I just tend to toss every leaflet and catalogue through the door away without looking as to who’s spamming me. My husband is usually the one who throws out the junk leaflets though and I doubt he knows anyone would be interested in collecting it either. I don’t want a catalogue of any size, and while I’m not angry about it like you’ve suggested, I don’t want a task of dealing with unsolicited mail beyond tossing it in the recycling bin.

Surely the fact that catalogues are uncontrolled when they are posted through strangers’ doors and a percentage may not be returned for any number of reasons (our neighbour’s house was unoccupied for over year for example) is just part of the cost of doing business and balanced against the opportunity for new customers.

I didn't mean you, I meant the ones getting so uptight about it and saying it's a scruffy invasion etc 😂

Purplebunnie · 11/12/2024 14:18

Not read the full thread but I think they have to pay for any catalogues that are not returned.

It's probably someone trying to make a few quid before Christmas

Just leave it on the doorstep but put a note in that you don't want them to leave them again and any future catalogues will be recycled

So B as I tried C and forgot to put it out

@TheLimeHedgehog also Avon is hardly "cheap tat".
It's quite expensive.

It the Bayliss & Harding of the Doorstep Catalogue People.

Needmorelego · 11/12/2024 15:35

@TheLightSideOfTheMoon well I'm mostly a Poundland or own brand from Aldi type person when it comes to bath stuff....so it's expensive to me 😂😂😂😂

FYI I left the catalogue out on the front step the day of the original post. It's still there. So now it really is going in the bin! No guilt at all!
