To throw the Avon catalogue...

I didn't even think Avon still did catalogues but I've just got home to find one through my door and a note saying they'll collect next week.

Person A says just throw it away, it's unsolicited mail.

Person B says just throw it out on the doorstep and let it sit there for a week.

Person C says keep it in and remember to put it out on the day it says it'll be collected.

Which team are you?

I’d put it out the following week with a note stating I wasn’t interested in Avon product so please don’t include me in a catalogue drop off again.

When I was a nurse there's were a couple of Avon reps at work,,Avon waa surprisingly popular, I never ordered anything myself but plenty of people did me think it,s a bit petty putting stuff in the recycling bin to make point the catalogs hardly take up much space just leave it in a plastic bag saying No thanks.

D. Order stuff

This 😂

SquashPenguin · 11/12/2024 07:20

MLMs are a disease. I'd put it straight in the recycling without a second thought.

Off you trot with your common sense!

MLMs are evil, but by doing that the only person you are harming is another victim of an MLM. The avon representative will have had to pay for the catalogue, and the cost will come out of the very small profit they make.

In my experience the vast majority of people involved in MLMs are women who are in financial difficulty, who are being exploited by those above them.

If you're happy making their shit life a little worse, go ahead, throw it away. Or you could just put a little bit of effort into helping them.

BogRollBOGOF · 11/12/2024 08:29

I'm pretty sure that the fencing company, pizza parlour, curry house, and dog walker etc all paid for their junk mail too.

They're all small businesses trying to make money.

Should I hire a walker for my non-existant dog to just to "be kind" to someone trying to earn a living? Should I order takeaways regularly to keep local small businesses solvent.

Am I a terrible person for scooping up the rest of the glossy junk and recycling it promptly?

Why does Avon carry "be kind" guilt tripping over any other small business? Not that Avon is a small business! It's just got an antiquated layer of localised business model that exposes its workers to a financial risk. I have no responsibility for the business model or peoples' choice to engage with it. Once the booklet has passed my threshold, it's my choice what to do with it and Avon have no right to dictate what I do with what they risked putting on my property. I didn't create their system and I'm not obliged to engage with it any more than than the (non-existant) obligation to replace my fence with the local contractor because they put a flyer through my door.

LovelyDaaling · 11/12/2024 09:04

I pinned a note on the front of the catalogue saying 'I don't use Avon so please don't leave me any more catalogues'. - and they haven't.

But it won’t help them @randomchap . It will just reinforce the shit they are being pedalled by the MLM company - empowering (I hate that word) women, bizniz owner, try harder, buy more….

The sooner they see the light the better.

Handing the catalogue back isn't going to help them. Completely agree.

However not handing it back will cost the representative.

It is very minimal effort to put the catalogue outside your door. I don't understand why people wouldn't as the only person this will negatively effect is likely to be someone being exploited

Maddy70 · 11/12/2024 10:09

My daughter did Avon for a while. The brochures, bàgs etc cost so much! Please don't put them in the bin. Just leave them on the step with a note not to leave again. It's a tough old world out there for lots of folk. Don't make it harder

The dog walker or fencing company are not expecting their leaflets back
I have never used Avon in my life and never intend to but I wouldn't deliberately throw it in recycling bin just to be petty i would leave it in a plastic bag.

Tink3rbell30 · 11/12/2024 10:24

The uptight and angry responses over a little catalogue are hilarious plus the refusal to be polite or have any thought for anyone else. It's also not scruffy/litter/an invasion 😂

mrsm43s · 11/12/2024 10:44

But I don't want a catalogue, I didn't ask for a catalogue. I'm also a busy full time worker with children and providing care for my elderly bedbound widowed mother. I have enough to do without having to take a catalogue, find a plastic bag to it in, write a note to say no thank you, and then remember to put it out on the right day. It's time and mental capacity I just don't have spare. I do my own job and I do it well, I don't palm bits of it off to the neighbours to do. I don't expect to be doing bits of other peoples jobs. Your catalogue is important to you? Fine, then don't shove it unsolicited through my door.

If someone did their job properly, rang the doorbell and asked if I'd like a catalogue, I'd be more than happy to politely tell them "no thank you". But why should I have an extra "job" to do because they're simply to lazy to do their job properly and instead just shove the catalogue through my door for me to deal with?

I'm not being petty or doing it out of spite. I simply don't have time or headspace to do anything else with junk mail than chuck it in the recycling bin.

Needmorelego · 11/12/2024 10:46

@BogRollBOGOF and others.....
what's your opinion on the local freebie magazines that most households get that tell you what's on and happening in your area.
Most councils publish and distribute at least one a year plus there's sometimes a few local sponsored publications.
Do they go straight in the recycling too and are you one of those folks that then complain that "nothing goes on in this town", "there's nothing for kids to dooooo" or "I didn't know this event was on because I didn't see it advertised".
Which is basically what gets repeated over and over on the town Facebook groups and someone will then say "this was all listed in the council magazine" and the reply is always "oh I don't read that.....it goes straight in my recycling".
😂😂😂😂😂

Needmorelego · 11/12/2024 10:49

@mrsm43s no offence meant here but surely the time it takes to answer your front door and have a brief conversation with the Avon rep is pretty much the same time it would take to leave the catalogue out for collection?

Actually yes they do. They are a tremendous waste of money.

If I need to know what’s going on in the village, all the local groups advertise heavily on the parish council website or the local FB group. However I will never be old enough to want to join in!

Sorry but why should any one spend any time dealing with unsolicited junk and unsolicited calls at their door.

If you can't afford to give away your cheap tat catalogues through a stranger's door, then don't post them.

A lot of people never asked for them and don't want them and don't want shit littering our doorstep either.

Needmorelego · 11/12/2024 10:56

@Elphame what do you mean you'll "never be old enough to want to join in"?
I was referring to big events (often run by the Town Council) like music festivals, family fun days in the town park, Christmas light switch on events, country fairs etc. That sort of thing.

Needmorelego · 11/12/2024 10:59

@TheLimeHedgehog it must take about 10 seconds to place an unwanted catalogue outside to be collected.
Maybe 30 seconds longer if you put get a food bag from the drawer and put it in it.
I'm sorry.....but these are hilarious and dramatic excuses.

biscuitsandbooks · 11/12/2024 11:00

I chuck it in the bin. I didn't ask for it and I don't want it.

If the reps don't want to lose money, maybe they shouldn't put junk mail through peoples letterboxes and expect them to store it for them for weeks on end 🤷‍♀️

Needmorelego · 11/12/2024 11:00

@TheLimeHedgehog also Avon is hardly "cheap tat".
It's quite expensive.

Needmorelego · 11/12/2024 11:01

@biscuitsandbooks "store it" - good grief. Just put it next to where you leave your shoes and coats etc.

Why should I?

Needmorelego · 11/12/2024 11:05

@biscuitsandbooks well no you don't have to.
It just some people in this thread are acting like a Avon catalogue is about 10 inches thick and the size of a table or something 😂😂
