To throw the Avon catalogue...

onionbahjeepers · 10/12/2024 13:06

I didn't even think Avon still did catalogues but I've just got home to find one through my door and a note saying they'll collect next week.

Person A says just throw it away, it's unsolicited mail.

Person B says just throw it out on the doorstep and let it sit there for a week.

Person C says keep it in and remember to put it out on the day it says it'll be collected.

Which team are you?

@nfk I think it's leaping bunny approved? Maybe I'm wrong but doing a bit of further googling definitely looks cruelty free to me?

I had a row with someone who knocked on my door asking for their Avon catalogue back. I said I hadn't got it and she started ranting on about how it had said on the front to leave outside. I told her that junk mail usually ends up straight in the bin so I wouldn't have checked for any instructions. She went ballistic and said it was her property that I had destroyed blah blah blah. Funnily enough, I didn't get any more through my door after that.

Exactly! If a pizza delivery place shoved a flier through the door, you wouldn't read through it, to check for instructions, in case the pizza place wanted the flier back...

Needmorelego · 10/12/2024 23:15

@TunipTheVegimal24 animal testing for cosmetics has been illegal in the uk since the late 90s so it must be more than a few years ago that you got a catalogue.

C. It costs the person to buy them. Be Kind

Not my problem. And no, I won't #BeKind This vomitworthy phrase needs consigning to the history books. It's just a way to make women shut up and fall in line.

healthybychristmas · 10/12/2024 23:20

There's no need to be mean to people. The representatives have to pay for the catalogues so I wouldn't just throw it away. When I got one I just bought a mascara but then she started coming every week!

TunipTheVegimal24 · 10/12/2024 22:51

I threw mine out, which was a mistake.

I didn't do it maliciously - just threw it out with all the other pamphlets and crap that gets posted through the door. A few days later, a lady came to collect it and said she had to pay out of her own pocket for the catalogues 😬 Super awkward. Just keep it until the woman comes back.

I agree with other posters though it's a wild concept. Like if a friend wanted to start sending you faxes instead of using WhatsApp 🤷‍♀️

No actually, I won't keep it until the woman comes back. See above. Not my problem. I didn't ask for the brochure, and like fuck am I babysitting it until she can be fucked to come back. And as I said, they NEVER come back when they say they're coming back. And I am not having it hanging about on my fucking doorstep for a week or more.

And no. I won't calm down.

As I said, not my problem. Don't put unsolicited shit through my letterbox.

I was thrilled and delighted to get one pushed through my door recently.
As cruelty free is important to me, I went ahead and ordered. And I am thrilled and delighted with my purchases! Just saying...

Have they stopped animal testing now? I stopped using them as they still tested on animals.

As for the people who don’t want to leave the doorstep looking scruffy, I do wonder how very tidy their doorsteps must be!

Sorry, I should have said, it wasn't approved by Peta at the time, which is always my go-to, for deciding if it's a product I can buy. So I guess maybe they were testing outside the UK or something before that?

Needmorelego · 10/12/2024 23:32

@TheDowagerCountessofPembroke it's been illegal in the UK to test cosmetics on animals since 1998.
There will probably be some products that Avon have sold for decades and the recipe has never changed so originally some products might have been tested on animals.
This would be the case for any cosmetic companies that still sell products that have remained unchanged for decades.

Needmorelego · 10/12/2024 23:34

@TunipTheVegimal24 PETA are American though so they may have a different set of standards? That's a guess - I don't know.
Edit : Google tells me animal testing on cosmetics was made illegal 2004. 20 years ago.

Way back in the mists of time of the 80s my mum was an Avon Lady.
She used the pink hair conditioner that came in giant bottles on my (and sister) hair.
You know what.....we never got nits once in our childhoods.
The last time I looked at an Avon catalogue (probably about 5 or 6 years) I was quite excited they were still selling this pink conditioner.
Not exactly a scientific study.....but 🤷

Omg @Needmorelego was it this? I have memories of it being slathered on my waist-length hair!

To throw the Avon catalogue...

If it's in a waterproof bag just leave it outside to be collected.

It's just someone trying to make a bit of money. I don't see why you would chuck it in the bin to make their life more difficult than it needs to be.

this.
everyone is trying and they charge the seller for the catalogs.
avon products are actually quite good by the way, but nevertheless no reason to do harm

Needmorelego · 11/12/2024 00:03

@LoveIndubitably it was most likely that stuff.
In my memory it came in a giant vat but I was much smaller back then so the bottles probably just seemed massive 😂

Straight in the recycling. I dont approve of MLMs or junk mail.

If they are worried about losing booklets maybe they should knock and ask rather than shoving it through the door. Or even better not get into a business that puts them at risk of losing money

Thedogstolemyheatedblanket · 11/12/2024 00:17

Princesssuperstar · 10/12/2024 22:13

It's the rep that has to pay for the books and only get a small percentage of any orders. Personally I like to try to order something even if it's just small to offer my support. Sometimes I do leave a note saying I'm skint as I have a lot to pay but happy to get another book in a couple month

You realise it is exactly this guilt buying that Avon are exploiting? That's why it's such a morally reprehensible business model

Well a brochure in a carrier bag sat there for a week is pretty grim (and a potential trip hazard)

Me and my sister had a vast collection of Little Blossom products too 😍

I can smell that picture 😁

Time40 · 11/12/2024 00:36

Oooh, they still exist! I want one! I used to love the Avon catalogue. I'd be option D - read it all and order a few things.

Tooty78 · 10/12/2024 16:46

I am kind of surprised they are still going. When I was a kid, in the 60s and 70s, my Mum would regularly buy some presents from Avon. Anyone else remember soap on a rope?

I fondly remember Pretty Peach, and those lovely cute bottles.

Oh, Pretty Peach🍑. This was my first set of really girly things back in the mid- 70s!
I did Avon back in 1983/84, used to use my “earnings” on other brands of make-up and nightclubs!😁 I remember filling out the main order form wrong (put 11 instead of 1) the talcum powder that turned up lasted quite some years time!
I do get odds and ends off Avon, but I order online. Quick and easy.

Avon isn't cruelty free.

Needmorelego · 11/12/2024 06:34

@AlexaSetATimer they must be because animal testing is illegal.
How would they get away with breaking the law?

Needmorelego · 11/12/2024 06:41

@AlexaSetATimer according to their website they are cruelty free and have been for many years.
Can you show evidence they aren't?
