Just that really.

Is it a love it or hate it song?

Because the bells are ringing out for Christmas Day?

And it starts on Christmas Eve in the drunk tank. It all takes place over Christmas. And frankly getting pissed and having a big fucking row is far more likely to happen in this house than herald angels singing and chestnuts roasting on open fires!

Stop the Cavalry wasn't written as a Christmas song but it was sold as one!

Wikipedia:

"The song actually had nothing to do with Christmas when I wrote it," Lewie told the Daily Express in 2005. "There is one line about [the soldier] being on the front and missing his girlfriend: 'I wish I was at home for Christmas.' The record company picked up on that from a marketing perspective, and added a tubular bell."[6]

Well yes, there is that.

I love it. Shane was a friend of a friend and I'm honoured to be able to say I got drunk with him many years ago, and he paid me £5 for my phone number (this was before The Pogues). Bugger never used it though (the phone number). Fond, mad memories :) My next favourite is Gaudete, but I never met any of Steeleye Span ;)

Same here! Fairytale is my favourite but Guadete a close second! I even try (badly) singing the lyrics to Guadete but it comes out like a drunken splurge!! 🤣🤣

OK, then my favourite Christmas song is mince pies. It's not a song, but it's Christmassy.

Never mind, darling. Hope you have a better day and get out of bed on the right side tomorrow Flowers

Arran2024 · 08/12/2024 19:53

Absolutely hate it. Turn it off if it comes on the radio.

Neither was "Stop The Cavalry" but irlt's become known as a Christmas song. It happens 😃

Stop the Cavalry was written as an anti-war song rather than a Christmas song, but it does contain the line "Wish I was at home for Christmas."

It has more claim to be a Christmas song than The Power of Love which, let's remember, isn't a Christmas song.

I don’t hate it, but it’s not my favourite (that place goes to Shaky!)

The Blossoms do a reasonable remake of this!

Gall10 · 08/12/2024 19:58

Bob Dylan & Tom Petty both have good Christmas songs!

Vicliz24 · 08/12/2024 20:00

Love it but my absolute favourite is Wizard wish it could be Christmas every day . The video creases me every time I see it .

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 08/12/2024 20:02

Love it, but I reckon my favourite is 2000 miles by the Pretenders. I particularly like the detachment of 'Outside!' 😂

I also love Gaudete by Steeleye Span, as I like Renaissance music... but critically do not object to it being performed in this way.

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 08/12/2024 20:02

And Slade 'Merry Christmas Everybody' for nostalgic reasons.

Vicliz24 · 08/12/2024 20:03

Also love Greg Lake I believe in Father Christmas

OK. Is it possible to agree that some music (I won't say songs) and some films have become enshrined in the general mindset of people who were around at the time as being Christmas orientated and thus part of Christmas even if ostensibly they do not mention the festive season in the lyrics?

Even if said song is accompanied on release by a video with the Virgin Mary, Joseph, Baby Jesus, a manger, angels, Magi, a donkey and camels? (to name a few components)

PS I really like "Run Run Rudolph " by Jon Bon Jovi and Madonna's "Santa Baby"

If they pass muster Grin

You're starting to sound like the way I feel when I hear the words "cringe" and "chill" being used as anything but a verb.

Crunchymum · 08/12/2024 20:05

Reminds me of my mum. Always has - even when she was alive - and always will. I'm sure it will remind my kids of me

Earlier today I may have tried to explain the backstory to my eldest why warbling along - man is a gambling alchie, who ruined the woman's life but its okay as he loves her and takes her to NY so his shit behaviour is fine - explained in more age appropriate terms of course!!

I love the bleakness of it, the sadness. The hope. It's a bit like life!!

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 08/12/2024 20:05

I can't stand it tbh his voice makes my eyes water

Didimum · 08/12/2024 20:09

It’s ok. My faves are Wizard, Shakin Steven’s and Slade. And Wham.

FlutteryButterfly · 08/12/2024 20:10

I've got many favourites, Fairytale Of New York isn't one of them- I don't mind it though.

I have a new (oldish entry, only heard it for the first time this year) I heard the Bells on Christmas Day by Johnny Reid. Beautifully sung and brings a tear to my eyes with what's going on around the world.

Cocolapew · 08/12/2024 20:15

I don't hate it but its not in my top ten.
This Christmas by Donny Hathaway
What Christmas Means To Me by Stevie Wonder
A Marshmallow World by Darlene Love
Merry Christmas Baby , Bruce Springsteen
And Silent Night by Sinead O'Connor are are vastly superior.

stargazerlil · 08/12/2024 20:17

It’s far Preferable than a Winters tale by David Essex that’s for sure.

Don't mind FONY

BeatsAntique · 08/12/2024 20:23

I wasn’t sure which way to vote because you didn’t say which was which but it’s definitely one of my favorite Christmas songs.

I'm having a great day, thanks.

Put the tree up. The Christmas tree. Not just some random elm or birch tree that I lugged into my house in December...
