Just that really.

Is it a love it or hate it song?

Wash your mouth out! I adore that song

My other faves are:
When A Child Is Born by Johnny Mathis
A Spaceman Came Travelling by Chris de Burgh
Pipes of Peace by Paul McCartney

Don't mind FONY

I love it too. It's one of my favourite David Essex songs. I choreographed a beautiful dance to it years ago.

Skitterywinter · 08/12/2024 20:32

my favourite is the darkness, don’t let the bells end but it rarely gets played anymore 🤔🤣

TorroFerney · 08/12/2024 20:33

The lyrics.

They aren't chavs. That is totally the wrong word imo but can't think of the right one!

It was just on Absolute radio, he's allowed to call her a junky slut still but she can't call him gay! Slightly odd.

They aren’t using the word as a homophobic slur.

It's in my top 20 but far from the best. Don't think many of you will agree with my top 5 choices though!

Wombling Merry Christmas
When a child is born
I wish it could be Christmas every day
Mary's boy child
Mistletoe and wine

Oh thank you ,Marys Boy Child yes that is a fab one.

Husband and I were in a cafe this morning and they had heart Christmas on. I thought he was going to cry when Michael buble came on and murdered the Darlene Love/Phil Spector Christmas song.

Indeed, and it's not that "she's calling him gay", it's the origins of the word used, and how it relates to gay people being tied up and burnt to death. I'm usually very broadminded about terminology and do think some thing have gone too far, but for me banning the use of that word in a very popular song was long overdue.

Elphame · 08/12/2024 20:41

It’s about the only one I don’t actively dislike…

Bored with it now for this year. It’s everywhere I go at the moment. I kept count one day last week and heard it 9 times.

I like it a lot but it’s not my favourite.

However I’m mildly amused by the pearl-clutchers who changed the lyrics to “you’re cheap and you’re haggard” instead of a bundle of sticks, while thinking “you’re an old slut on junk” is absolutely fine Hmm

The theme for our Christmas tree event was Christmas songs, not just hymns, and I originally wanted to decorate my tree with Fairy tale in NY, sadly I was rather ill in the couple of weeks before so didn't get round to it. I was telling a couple of the WI what my plans had been and they thought it was a wonderful idea, 'Fairy tales are lovely', a couple of others listening were almost rolling on the floor laughing. I so regret not doing it, I had started by cutting out NYPD signs ready.

OK. Is it possible to agree that some music (I won't say songs) and some films have become enshrined in the general mindset of people who were around at the time as being Christmas orientated and thus part of Christmas even if ostensibly they do not mention the festive season in the lyrics?

Even if said song is accompanied on release by a video with the Virgin Mary, Joseph, Baby Jesus, a manger, angels, Magi, a donkey and camels? (to name a few components)

PS I really like "Run Run Rudolph " by Jon Bon Jovi and Madonna's "Santa Baby"

If they pass muster Grin

Edited

Sure! There are plenty of songs, films and TV shows which are associated with Christmas but which aren't Christmas songs, shows or movies.

The Wrong Trousers. Stay Another Day. The Sound of Music. The Power of Love. Somewhere Only We Know.

The Power of Love has a Christmas-themed video but it's not a Christmas song.

I don't think there's any doubt that songs about Santa and Rudolph are Christmas songs.

I'm having a great day, thanks.

Put the tree up. The Christmas tree. Not just some random elm or birch tree that I lugged into my house in December...

I can't quite decide if you're on the wind up or being serious 🙈

TheLittleOldWomanWhoShrinks · 08/12/2024 20:45

Glad someone mentioned A Winter's Tale - I love it too. 'I hope that love and strength are with you for the length of your time on earth', such a beautiful sentiment.

No, my favourite is Step into Christmas by Elton John.

I like all of the others but this for some reason is my favourite.

And me!

JudgeJ · 08/12/2024 20:46

On of my favourites is It Was On A Starry Night, one year our children had sung it in the school concert and we were on the ferry coming back for Christmas, along with a few other families. The children were sitting round the corner from us and singing their heads off, when they came back to us they had a pile of money people had been giving them, especially tipsy soldiers!

You forgot to mention the part where this "bundle of sticks" was then set on fire to burn to death gay people who had been tied up beforehand.

Glad to see someone else appreciates good old Elton. M

Neither. I'm being deliciously wry.

Oh I love that one.

And the Dido one called 'Christmas Day'.

JohnTheRevelator · 08/12/2024 20:50

I really don't like it.

Waltdisnerd · 08/12/2024 20:50

A close second to baby it's cold outside

user2848502016 · 08/12/2024 20:50

No I hate it!

CannyFettle · 08/12/2024 20:54

I like it but it is overplayed on the radio so I'm usually sick of it by mid December. My favourite is In Dulci Jubilo.

The problem with In Dulci Jubilo is that I instinctively feel the need to dance along as if I were in a very, very poor amateur production of "Riverdance". I have no idea why I do this, but what I do know is that as I approach my fifties, it's a rather dangerous thing to do for fear of falling over, never more so than this morning when it came on my playlist while I was mopping the kitchen floor.

Yeah it's so beautiful and sung very understatedly (if that's a word 🤣)

ThisIsSockward · 08/12/2024 21:02

No, not a fan at all. I actively avoid it.
