Just that really.

Is it a love it or hate it song?

And, yes, you're right, the Christmas bread packaging is just marketing for pre-existing non-Christmas food. Like the videos for The Power of Love, Pipes of Peace and Stay Another Day are just marketing for pre-existing non-Christmas songs.

Are there non Christmas themed versions of these?

Anoisagusaris · 09/12/2024 15:48

One of my favourite songs of all time, not just Christmas songs. Shane McGowan was a poet, a legend. It’s such a heartbreaking yet uplifting song. I adore Kirsty too.

There's definitely a non-Christmas Stay Another Day video: https://www.bbc.co.uk/bbcthree/article/07f7c216-6964-4aba-a960-1a0fa74c0fe4

East 17

Is East 17's Stay Another Day actually a Christmas song?

"On the one hand, it has bells, snow and silly outfits. On the other, it is actually about death."

No. I’m not a lover of Christmas songs generally. The only one I find palatable is Darlene Love

AlecTrevelyan006 · 09/12/2024 16:10

Stop The Cavalry isn’t about Christmas - it’s an anti-war song but everyone associates it with Christmas because 1) there’s a single line in the song that references Christmas and 2) it was released in December 1980.

Masterbeth already did that one.

White bread is eaten all year around . Stop the Cavalry , Stay, Pipes of Peace are only played at Christmas. That is the difference. Technically not about Christmas but synonymous with Christmas. They have become a Christmas tradition
I would argue that The Power of Love is different because that does get played at other times.

To have a conversation about Christmas songs. Do you have anything to say on the subject?

It’s my thread and I don’t want you in it Tiny Tim.

'Grandma got run over by a reindeer' is a funny Christmas song

Oblomov24 · 10/12/2024 06:23

Not my fave. I like a variety of old and new. I do actually like Mariah Christmas one.

Mummadeze · 10/12/2024 06:27

Funny, I was just saying the other day how it is my least favourite Christmas song! Last Christmas is my favourite and never gets old for me.

Remember Minuetto Allegretto? It was one of the first pieces I learnt to play on my clarinet!

Bongeyzenobe · 10/12/2024 18:34

@Elphame First album I ever had was Wombles greatest hits so they are all classic tunes in my mind!

worrisomeasset · 10/12/2024 19:16

I’ve heard all of them so many times that I don’t want to hear any of them again. I was in M&S earlier today and they were playing the usual festive cack. Then, to my surprise and joy, they played “Miss You” by the Rolling Stones, a song that has no Christmas links whatsoever. I don’t even like the song that much, it was just a blessed relief to have something that wasn’t Mariah, Pogues, Wham etc playing for just a bit.

NeedABabelFish · 10/12/2024 19:25

@Crikeyalmighty - I work in music - you have very good taste!!

Why, thank you very much! Not many people have said that to me 😂
