Going out shopping in your PJ's and slippers

That's the third time this week, a sighting across 3 towns, nice seasonal tartan numbers with sturdy animal slippers Grin

Best one was in Booths, a family of three resplendent in matching jammies. imagine the pearl clutching at that!

Still, what does it mean exactly? I thought this had died off years ago. If it's happening up here in Booths, maybe it's coming to a Waitrose near you further south any time now..

I don't currently drive so I don't have the luxury of choice, it's rainproof up to the eyeballs up here in storm Darragh.

It’s gross, I see it everyday where I live and i think it’s horrible. People going to shops and doing school run wearing dressing gowns and pyjamas. I think it’s so unhygienic, why would you get into bed wearing clothes you walk around town in? It’s so lazy and slovenly.

I also see people wearing sliders and socks out when it’s raining. So strange.

CatNoon · 09/12/2024 15:02

@Needmorelego Your situation isn’t what is being discussed here. You have purpose-bought clothes for going out, which happen to be categorised as ‘pyjamas’. It really isn’t the same as wearing your actual pyjamas, that you sleep in, out, nor is it the same as wearing house slippers out. If your slippers are hard-soled that you wear for going out, and not in the house, then I suppose that is different but it is a bit odd, nonetheless. No, no one should ‘care’, but humans judge each other on all sorts of things all of the time. Rolling out of bed in your pjs, sticking on your house slippers and shuffling out to the shops is judge-worthy whether that’s nice or has any bearing on anyone’s lives. The only exception would be if you were too ill to get dressed.

Needmorelego · 09/12/2024 15:07

@CatNoon but how does anyone know if what the person is wearing in the supermarket is the same as what they sleep in or whatever?
No one actually knows. It's just assuming.

CurbsideProphet · 09/12/2024 15:09

I definitely think it's gross to be out and about in full on pyjamas and a dressing gown. But generally this thread is pretty tongue in cheek. It's Mumsnet 💁🏻‍♀️

henlake7 · 09/12/2024 15:21

Thing is there is plenty of loungewear (and actual pajamas) that you can wear during the day and to bed and nobody would be able to tell the difference.
Likewise there are plenty of slippers that have hard soles and could easily be worn outside and look halfway presentable.

If you are choosing to wear something that def looks like PJs, fluffy slippers and a dressing gown to do your weekly shop or just potter around the High St you are saying something about yourself....Im just not sure its anything good!

This.

Yes to the corner shop opposite my house for some bread etc but I wouldn't go anywhere else in them.

Needmorelego · 09/12/2024 14:45

@CurbsideProphet yes it is different.
To be honest other than at a campsite I've never (or don't remember seeing) anyone in their fleecy pjs, dressing gown and slippers out shopping/doing the school run. I often think threads like these are wildly exaggerated.
It just annoys me with these threads that instantly there's all the "eww how gross" and "don't they have respect" which just sounds childish tbh.

I saw a woman yesterday in full fluffy dressing gown and slippers in the betting shop. I think that's peak judge for me.

Needmorelego · 09/12/2024 18:17

@BigDahliaFan you were in a betting shop 😱
Perhaps I should judge that 😂😂😂😂😂

Or perhaps walking past, delivering something, works there……

Needmorelego · 09/12/2024 18:30

@TheDowagerCountessofPembroke betting shops have to have their windows covered so she wouldn't be able to see in.
Working there ....ooh that's more judging from me 😂😂😂
Delivering something....ok maybe 🤔

Havalona · 09/12/2024 18:31

I don't give a shiny sh1t about what anyone wears. I wouldn't go out in PJs myself, but have been known to venture out in similar looking stuff, albeit a dark one colour loose PJish ensemble! But patterned PJs don't suit me 😊

The only comment I mutter to myself when I see the chequered/patterned obvious PJs is in relation to the footwear. I can't even walk around the house in anything fluffy, backless and "clacky". I don't know how they do it! But it's part of the FU uniform I think.

ForGreyKoala · 09/12/2024 19:26

Needmorelego · 09/12/2024 13:48

These are the type of pyjamas I wear as non-bedtime clothes and as general everyday clothes.
What's the difference between this and a t-shirt and trousers?

The difference is that those pjs are clearly marked as being part of the nightwear range. T-shirts and trousers are not, and tbh if I saw someone wearing those pants my first thoughts would be that they were wearing pjs.

Needmorelego · 09/12/2024 19:47

@ForGreyKoala I have two pairs of very similar trousers. Both black with a white pattern on. Both elastic waist. Both soft material.
One pair came from the nightwear section at Primark.
The other pair came from the regular clothing section at Peacocks.
Without looking at the labels I could not tell you off the top of my head which is which.
They are almost identical 😂😂
(one was bought as an emergency pair while on holiday - which is why I have 2 practically identical items).
I am also assuming you've never seen the summer trouser selection in Bon Marche. It's pretty much lightweight casual trousers with flowery patterns on - very similar to those Primark PJ's.
And a plain t-shirt is a......plain t-shirt 🤔

Spidey66 · 10/12/2024 12:43

I'm pretty non judgmental but yes I'd judge. I might answer the door to the postie in my dressing gown but that's my limit. You don't have to dress up but at least a pair of jeans and a top!

Toddlerteaplease · 10/12/2024 17:49

My sister works in the vicinity of two Booths Stores and mentioned family coming into her workplace all in matching PJ's. I wondered if it's the same family the OP saw!
