Going out shopping in your PJ's and slippers

That's the third time this week, a sighting across 3 towns, nice seasonal tartan numbers with sturdy animal slippers Grin

Best one was in Booths, a family of three resplendent in matching jammies. imagine the pearl clutching at that!

Still, what does it mean exactly? I thought this had died off years ago. If it's happening up here in Booths, maybe it's coming to a Waitrose near you further south any time now..

I don't currently drive so I don't have the luxury of choice, it's rainproof up to the eyeballs up here in storm Darragh.

What type of a shop is Booths. I have heard of Boots chemist but not Booths

What about coming down to hotel breakfast in your jammies? What do people think of that?

Grotty.

I just nipped into the co-op in my PJs, dressing gown and Sliders!

But why would you do that?

CrazyAndSagittarius · 08/12/2024 17:35

I don't care what people wear but I can't understand why you'd wear slippers outside of the house. Especially not when raining. It's just impractical! Weird to wear clothes completely impractical for the weather. I can't see the motivation for that, it's not as if it's comfortable having soggy feet. Otherwise I can't see much difference between pyjamas or a tracksuit or sweatsuit and joggers. Same clothes, different fabric pattern.

I have a plain black zipped Oodie dupe that I was given as a gift. I have worn it outside. It just looks like a seriously oversized hoodie.

I have seen people wear their Oodie dupes out and about and I think they look warm and cosy.

Mine is a real Oodie and I look like a mobile duvet in it, plus it's all fluffy. I've had people driving past and stopping to ask me what I've got on! (I already know them, it's not strangers or anything). So I have no illusions. But I'm lovely and snug.

ByMerryKoala · 08/12/2024 17:36

Booths is where you go if you think M&S is for the riff raff.

WaitingforStrike · 08/12/2024 17:36

It's a "look" isn't it, rather than actually being unable to bother getting dressed.
i wouldn't even drop someone off in the car without getting dressed, what if I had an accident?

PeonyBlushSuede · 08/12/2024 17:37

Raindropskeepfallinonmyhead · 08/12/2024 17:08

The only time it is acceptable imo is if you are dropping someone off or picking them up and you won't be getting out of the car!

Or McDonald's drive thru for a sausage and egg McMuffin!

One day I'll get caught out and the drive thru will be closed and I'll have to go in

Sounds lovely and warm! Might wear mine even more!

Pickingmyselfup · 08/12/2024 17:42

I generally wouldn't but one night I went to the supermarket in my usual shitty tracksuit bottoms but had forgotten to swap my slippers for Uggs because they feel very similar! It wasn't until I started walking from the car to the shop that I thought something didn't feel right, looked down and there were my pink slipper boots. I debated going back to change them but it would add on unnecessary time and it didn't seem worth it.

To be fair there isn't a whole lot of difference in my slippers to my Uggs and my tracksuit bottoms are probably just plainer and thicker than pyjamas so it's pretty much the same. I certainly wasn't oozing style and fashion even if I had my Uggs on.

I've walked round the corner to my friends in my oodie so I can't really judge.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 08/12/2024 17:57

I don’t really have an issue with pyjamas but wearing slippers out of the house just seems odd to me as most slippers aren’t made to withstand outdoor weather and floor conditions. I feel like if you wear slippers out and about the soles would either end up soggy or torn.

MumblesParty · 08/12/2024 17:58

It’s a statement. I don’t think many pyjama shoppers genuinely rushed out without having time to get dressed. They’ve chosen to wear pyjamas because it’s a look, and they presumably think it makes them a bit cool and edgy. I hate it. I don’t want to see what people sleep in, and know that they haven’t washed that day.

Edited

I ONLY buy slippers with proper soles that can be worn outside. I've spent too much time belting the full length of the garden in the pouring rain yelling at the dog to 'put that DOWN!' to ever fall for the lovely looking but totally impractical 'indoor only' slippers again.

You do you but in my world slippers are indoor only shoes and can therefore be worn around the house as they aren’t dirty.

Daisy12Maisie · 08/12/2024 18:10

In Asda earlier I bumped into a man I vaguely know from work with his teen children. I would have been mortified if I had been in my pyjamas and slippers. That's the trouble if you are in public you could see someone you know from anywhere eg work/ your child's teacher etc. I wouldn't do it but I don't make a huge effort when I go out either.

Laughing at the thought of this. I've got tiled floors, a filthy dog and I don't give a tuppenny shit about 'germs' as I've still failed to die from toilet flushing germs or not changing my towels every twenty seconds.

But I know everyone has different standards, so that's fine.

Kendodd · 08/12/2024 18:15

I bet they haven't got knickers on either.

Sunnyflow · 08/12/2024 18:16

Exactly - that's the point of slippers. They're warm, furry and generally have a soft sole. They are house shoes!

Supermarket, a cut above Waitrose.

If pyjamas are edgy now then I am completely out of touch; surely they are the least edgy item of clothing most people own?

Edited to add: I think we agree overall though bc I think it is a bit "look at me" as it's perfectly possible to buy fairly nondescript navy blue leggings/pyjama bottoms if you really can't be bothered to get dressed, and no one would be any the wiser!

The hygiene aspect of it though does give me the ick. I know people insist that they have day PJs etc which they don't sleep in, but if you are going to that amount of trouble then why not just put on jeans and a jumper?

It's similar to the French insisting on men wearing proper Speedos in public pools, and not boxer type swim shorts, presumably bc you cannot wear those in any other context? I think supermarkets may have to start insisting on proper attire soon, as they do in holiday resorts. There are often notices asking men to wear shirts for example and not shop bare chested.

SauvignonBlanche · 08/12/2024 18:23

In Booths? 😲
That’s unforgivable!

No Waitrose' in the north😯❓

I'm seeing a lot of PJ'S and slippers in public recently. Stinky?, goes through my mind.

We have both, but Booths is far superior.

It’s seen as cool to wear them to go out. And also as a “fuck you” to everyone around you.

Beesandhoney123 · 08/12/2024 18:27

I don't understand why people don't just dressed. I can't help but think their bed linen must be smelly, as if they can't be bothered to get dresses, house and personal hygiene are unlikely to be of importance.
I guess I'm judging, but wandering about in pj's ? Just get dressed. No one wants to see you in your night attire

I love Waitrose but it’s not a patch on Booths https://www.booths.co.uk/
I dream of moving closer to one even though I’m walking distance to a large Waitrose I always call in when visiting family close to those hallowed establishments.

The UK's Food, Wine and Grocery Store | Booths Supermarket

Since June 1847 Booths Supermarket have been selling the best goods available, in attractive stores, staffed with first class assistants.
