Passengers sigh when they remove bag off neighbouring seat on PT

Unless you paid for two seats or have 2 passes for yourself and bag, people should not be using seat next to them for their bag(s)

Totally agree. It their feet with no shoes on. Or shoes on for that matter.

NotMyCircus99 · 07/12/2024 05:53

So? They’re not causing a fuss, just sighing.

Meadowfinch · 07/12/2024 05:53

If there's plenty of room, there's no reason why not.

But as soon as another passenger needs the seat, bags get moved immediately without sighing. And equally, the newly arrived passenger says thanks and sits down.

Each is polite to the other. No-one is offended. 🤗

Feet should never be on seats. That's just dirty.

Regalrosie · 07/12/2024 06:02

Just sit on their bags - I did this often when the train was standing room only and these selfish idiots refused to move their bags. Funny enough they soon grabbed them when they realised I was serious.

itsgettingweird · 07/12/2024 06:07

If a seats empty I'll put my bag on it.

If someone needs to sit down I'll move it 🤷‍♀️

The issue isn't the plonking of bags in a convenient empty space.

It's the selfish fuckers who refuse to move them when they are needed.

This, and if they sigh, it might be rude but it has no bearing on you or your life. Ignore it.

Agree. I do it with manspreaders, just sit down in my seat and if their legs are there well tough.

Zanatdy · 07/12/2024 06:15

I always tell them to move it. To be fair most do and apologise. But when you see the train getting busy and people starting to stand, move your bloody bag. My friend had an argument with some people the other week refusing to move their luggage for an elderly lady to sit down. Just put your bag on the floor or your bloody lap, why put it on the seat anyway? I never do

I was on a crowded Trans Pennine Express train recently and gave up my pull down seat for a young kady on crutches because the only available proper seat had someone's rucksack on it.

I wish I had asked the rucksack owner whether she had paid for the extra seat, but DD told me not to make a fuss.

She was probably a mumsnetter who couldn't bear the thought of someone sitting next to her.

nfg · 07/12/2024 06:47

Had people who were reluctant to remove their bag. Just say "have you paid for your bag to have a seat?" is a guaranteed way of them moving their bags.

My DMum sat on a woman's coat .
DMum is in her 80's and said woman was much younger and sat in the priority seat.

DD is 24 but has a hidden disability. If there is only one seat I stand and let her sit. I expect she gets judged for this.

I went to the hospital on the bus with a crutch. Still given looks.

People need to understand that disabilities are hidden and injuries that affect walking/standing can happen at all ages.

But bags are often put on the dirty ground, and then those very same bags get put on a seat meant for people. Given this, what is the difference between dirty shoes and the dirty bag? I think neither should be on the seat.

@RampantIvy She didnt have any problem with a person in the seat - until the person refused to move their coat. And yes, DMum is well aware of hidden disabilities- retired nurse and carer for our cousin with autism.
Plus she sat on the coat, not the person.

The only place my bag is on the floor is indoors, and even if it weren’t the case there’s a world of difference between shoes which are in constant contact and a bag which might very occasionally be put down after checking you’re not going to put it on anything.

That’s quite an extreme comparison (extreme isn’t the right word but I can’t think of the right word)

JustAFear · 07/12/2024 07:00

Well, yes obviously bags shouldn’t be taking up a seat.

But don’t let a sigh get to you, life’s too short!

Maybe not you, but many people put their bags on the floor, even if briefly. And it only takes a millisecond to make contact with anything like dog shit, vomit or any other kind of horrible things. People need to keep the bags, like their shoes, off seats which are meant for people to be sitting down on.

GeorgeMichaelsCat · 07/12/2024 07:45

I do this if there are free seats elsewhere but some fucker has to sit next to me. I always move my bag if the bus/carriage is getting busy as leaving it there would be unreasonable.

RampantIvy · 07/12/2024 07:54

On the TPE train from York to Huddersfield they have to ask passengers to remove bags off seats when approaching Leeds as loads of people get on there.

NotMyCircus99 · 07/12/2024 05:53

It’s not very polite though eh? And suggests they’re annoyed and sighing is the passive aggressive way to let people know you’re not happy.

Rude and entitled as fuck of them

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 07/12/2024 08:08

TBH I never understand why people having to stand on buses won’t ask people to move their bags off seats. I see it a lot. I never feel awkward about asking (politely) and I do get the odd eye-roll, but nobody’s ever refused.

What does really irritate me is how often it’s apparently perfectly fit and mobile young people (nearly always very young women, I’m afraid to say) who plonk themselves in the first available (priority) seats, when there are plenty further back. And given that they typically hop on and off the bus like mountain goats, I don’t believe for a moment that they all have hidden disabilities.

In the same vein, children, particularly those still in nappies, should not be in the actual basket of a shopping trolley. That's what the seat bit is for.
Very unhygienic

QuizzicalPause · 07/12/2024 08:13

Are you being an equal opportunities bag move requester though? I only ask as I am a frequent user of public transport and often it is the women with bags being expected to move them while a bloke nearby is left to spread his legs out and take up two seats or leave his bag on a chair while he types on his laptop
