Unless you paid for two seats or have 2 passes for yourself and bag, people should not be using seat next to them for their bag(s)

I think it’s just unnecessary. A lot of people find it difficult to ask someone to remove a bag, to ask and then the person sighs at you and you then have to sit next to them the whole journey it’s unnecessarily uncomfortable. If someone asks you to move a bag the answer should always be ‘of course’. I am a confident person and will always ask, it would annoy me if someone sighed at me when all I want to do is sit down!!

So, you're annoyed, you're uncomfortable. That's a you problem.

@RampantIvy She didnt have any problem with a person in the seat - until the person refused to move their coat. And yes, DMum is well aware of hidden disabilities- retired nurse and carer for our cousin with autism.
Plus she sat on the coat, not the person.

Edited

Presumably she first asked the person to move it?

I used priority seats if needed, I have a hidden disability (unless I bring a stick) and it would very dangerous for me to stand. I don't owe the world an explanation

FancyAReallyLongUsernameJustForAChange · 07/12/2024 12:11

They should be removing the bags themselves once the train/bus starts getting full. My personal rule is to move my bag as soon as there are no more empty double seats.

Actually no it’s a problem for a lot of people dealing with rude people who think they deserve two seats on a train, I’m guessing you are probably one of them.

Wolfpa · 07/12/2024 12:12

I think a lot of people are just blissfully unaware that they have to share the world with other people. It’s like people who insist on taking their dog onto a busy train and letting it sit on a seat. Why would anyone think that was acceptable.

SleepyHippy3 · 07/12/2024 12:14

allthatfalafel · 07/12/2024 11:27

But if you always put your bag on the table then it's never been on the floor.

Not necessarily. I have seen people put bags from the floor up to and onto tables, and she did say that if someone comes along she will move her „”bag to the floor or table….”, so there probably been times where that bag has been both on the floor as well a table.

OolongTeaDrinker · 07/12/2024 12:14

I do sigh if the person wanting the seat next to me could have had their pick of seats next to someone without shopping on the seat, but are probably choosing to ask me to move my bags to make a point. Obviously on a crowded carriage/bus no-one should even be putting their bags on a seat, but there isn't anything inherently wrong with putting your bag/coat on a seat in general if it's not causing anyone else a problem.

SuperfluousHen · 07/12/2024 12:16

If there’s plenty of room I usually set my bag on the seat, but if it’s starting to get a little busy I lift it when people get on and if no one sits in it I usually put it back there.

The other day someone got on in the seat behind me and started hammering on the back of my seat- it was easy to just get up and move rather than have a confrontation so that’s what I did.

Thankfully the buses and trains that I travel on very regularly aren’t usually too busy. Bus was packed last night though in the storm and it was grim- every seat taken and people standing in the aisle right up to the driver. He stopped at every stop where more people wanted to get on to tell them the bus was full but there was another one coming 1 minute behind us as we were going to quite an out of the way place and they would have been devastated if he had just blanked them.
Good driver.

Weird guess, since I've TWICE said that I always move my bag to let people sit. 🤔

As long as I move my bag, it's not my probably that you're all freaked out because I expressed air from my mouth in a way you don't like. Perhaps you could just get over yourself instead?

mitogoshigg · 07/12/2024 12:17

I ask people to move their stuff, I've also asked people on national express if they would move so I can sit next to dh - generally on national express people do do cheerfully, whereas on trains they sigh but still do it. It's a non issue on our buses because it's a poorly used rural service, there's always lots of spare seats

hagchic · 07/12/2024 12:20

I can understand preferring to have a bit of personal space and achieving that through plonking your bag down. There are members of the general public that I would prefer not to sit next to - in fact I would choose to stand instead.

Sadly, it's public transport - so if someone needs a seat you have to move it.

I thinking sighing is fine, and would mostly amuse me as I got comfortable.

People asking you to move your bag when there are lots of double seats available then I would find weird and redirect them to the other seats.

SuperfluousHen · 07/12/2024 12:20

SleepyHippy3 · 07/12/2024 06:53

But bags are often put on the dirty ground, and then those very same bags get put on a seat meant for people. Given this, what is the difference between dirty shoes and the dirty bag? I think neither should be on the seat.

I never put my bag on dirty ground.

ElfAndSafetyBored · 07/12/2024 12:23

You could get in first by sighing just before you have to ask them to move something, to indicate you know they are BU first.

Or more sensibly, ignore them and their sighing and know that loads of other people in the carriage are mentally high fiving you.

Ah so you do sigh when people ask to sit down. Not at all surprised. I couldn’t give a flying piece of shit if someone sighs, but i’m a very nice person and I know many people would find that difficult. So next time someone asks you to move your bag, try and keep the air in your mouth, smile and say ‘of course’.

If you’re having an uncomfortable journey because someone sighed when moving their stuff that’s your issue.

They aren’t sighing at you, they are sighing. It’s no big deal. I’m sure I’d like a seat to myself too but thems the breaks.

Thistooshallpsss · 07/12/2024 12:29

I prefer a bit of space and I can’t easily reach my bag on the floor or the top rack. But I’ll move my stuff if it gets busy of course and if don’t notice just ask I won’t get huffy! Also with my grey hair ( and elderly appearance I suppose 🤨) i am nearly always offered a seat especially on the tube which I am always grateful for as I find doing the balancing act a bit tricky. And we have some big gaps to get off the train here but someone will always give me a hand or pass my luggage- in general I find that people are kind and helpful which is so nice.

May I ask why you do that? Not being goady just have always wondered.

I believe it's selfish as I imagine that person plonking their bag on the seat next to them does it to try and make sure no one sits next to them.

To be honest if I have a choice of sitting next to someone who's got a bag on their seat or one who hasn't, I'll always choose the bag seat. As it annoys me so much.

So would be interested to know why people do it.

I personally always try to sit on the outside seat, so I don't get stuck by the window. Obviously I'll always move to let another sit down but will keep my outside seat.

I set my bag on the seat beside me because it’s huge (more like a backpack) as I need to stay over at my destination, need extra clothing etc.

It’s heavy and uncomfortable on my (arthritic) knees and if the seat beside me is vacant and the bus / train isn’t busy why wouldn’t I set my bag on the seat? Obviously if it is busy I lift it onto my knee at each stop and if no one takes the empty seat I set it down there again.

I can’t get it into the overhead rack (arthritic hands).

What am I doing wrong?

*typo

Porridgeislife · 07/12/2024 12:31

I always leave my bag on the seat until the train is getting full. I don’t sigh and will happily move it when asked.

If you’re a woman of normal size that appears clean and not crazy, everyone makes a beeline to sit with you first when there’s no double seats left. Women because you’re safe & men because you’re not taking up too much space so more for them. Men will always sit beside women before they’ll sit beside another bloke.

disagree. I have never felt the need to sigh in this situation but then I don’t tend to take up all the space on public transport anyway. I know sighing would make that person think they’d annoyed me and I just wouldn’t do that.

Surely blocking the window seat by sitting on the aisle is no different to having your bag on the seat. Someone still has to ask you to move.

SleepyHippy3 · 07/12/2024 11:16

But you are still putting a bag, that has been on the dirty floor, on a seat next to you, just for convenience! And then you say that if someone gets on, and needs that seat, you will put your bag on the floor, or „”table”? But then your bag is making the table dirty. Can you not do what the majority of people do and just keep your bags on the floor or in the over head hanger?

I don’t put my bag on the floor and I can’t use the overhead rack. It’s on my knee or on the seat and if the seat is empty anyway and the bus/ train isn’t busy, why not use it?

theeyeofdoe · 07/12/2024 12:41

I really like the fact that people put bags on seats as it means that I always get one as I have no issue asking people to move their bags!

For sure, and if course not everyone does it, but there are many people who do. Just watch people on a busy train platform quite a few of them with bags/luggage/shopping, boarding an empty train, so many will pick those bags up and put them next to the seat next to them. I have seen this many times over a life time of train and tube travel. Not nice at all.

So because some people put their bags on the ground you don’t think anybody should put their bag on a seat? 🤔

Try taking a tissue with you and spending your journey coughing loudly into it, with the occasional loud nose blow for good measure 😃
