Is this feminism?

I've just read about a 23 year old who comes from a wealthy background and plans to sleep with 1,000 men in 24 hrs.

In the article*, she calls herself a feminist and says she feels empowered.

I don't understand why this woman wants to do this. I can obviously understand the financial aspect but she talks about the event taking place in a warehouse with men coming in one door and leaving out the other.

I'm obviously behind the times because when I was that age, women didn't aspire to live stream themselves having sex with countless men.

I'm wondering what the hell has happened for women to choose to do this and think it's empowering. These women have the support of their families which I also don't understand.

This particular thing she’s doing is (obviously) anti-feminist. But that doesn’t mean SHE is not a feminist, as she may still hold feminist aims and values.

Almost all of us do anti-feminist things in our daily lives all the time. But we may still be feminists. This is just a very extreme example.

More useful than questioning whether she/this is feminist is examining what it tells us about men’s attitudes to women that there is an hugely profitable audience for this, and so many willing to participate.

ChillysWaterBottle · 07/12/2024 06:20

It's an act of self harm, not feminism.

'Choice' feminism is just capitalism.

Zestylemo · 07/12/2024 06:23

Feminism is the belief that women and men should have equitable rights.

Using your body for the gratification (ejaculation) of 1000’s of men perpetuates the idea women’s bodies are vessels for male enjoyment.

Is she a feminist? I doubt it when she ‘chooses’ to do this.

Is this an act of feminism? Absolutely not.

An act of feminism would be fighting for a space on a board of directors or working within a charity that lifts women towards equitable status to men.

We've seen from years of freely available porn that there's a huge appetite for this. In fact, men can't seem to get enough.

I'm interested in how society has changed regarding women and the sex industry.

We've seen how even the clothes of little girls are sexualised from slogans to g strings. How teenagers are encouraged to pose seductively on social media and how young women are turning to Onlyfans as an act of empowerment.

Is this simply the pornification of society?

Its a job, how is any job feminist? You can work in the sex industry and believe men and women should have equal rights.

i think we need to stop focusing on her and focus on the 1000 men willing to do this to a woman.

I would guess she has been exposed to hard line misogyny, more than the average women, and believes that it’s empowering to have so many men ejaculate inside her. Or she is mentally ill.

Which ever it is, the 1000 men involved should be questioned about their understand of the woman who has consented. They should be asked about their actions perpetuating misogyny and harming all women in society where 1 in 4 woman will be raped in their lifetime.

The 1000 men who partake in this act should be ashamed of themselves.

khaitai · 07/12/2024 08:06

This is not meant to excuse the men doing this but, from what I've read, it sounds like she typically targets uni freshers (i.e. age 18) for these types of things and films it all and puts it online. I think there's a high chance many of these young men will live to regret it and will feel very ashamed of themselves.

You're thinking of another woman who does this, I think her name is Bonnie Blue. She's the one who targets Freshers. This woman just wants the men to be over 18.

No one who has any sense of self worth or self esteem whatsoever could do this. She is allowing herself to be degraded and treated as an object.

Louise Perry has writes about something called sexual disenchantment in her book "the case against the sexual revolution" and I can't think of a better example of it than this.

Love Louise Perry, this book is excellent

Annabella92 · 07/12/2024 08:18

Oh wow there's more than one. Jesus. I guess this is the inevitable consequence of so many young people growing up on a diet of readily accessible extreme pornography.

CatsndtheBear · 07/12/2024 08:28

I advocate for safe conditions for sex workers... But let's not fool ourselves.
Sex work wouldn't exist if we weren't in a patriarchal society where men see women's bodies as a commodity to be consumed.

There is nothing inherently feminist about being a sex worker, although you can have feminist ideals and opinions.

A lot of women do the best they can, but pretending it is an empowering career path (presuming no trauma/poverty/trafficking) is deluded.

Yes. This is why I started the thread as I don't understand why women are doing this.

I can understand women who get into sex work because of poverty or addiction but not if they have choices.

This is pure commodification of her body simply because she can. I'm wondering what has gone wrong in society for this to be seen as acceptable and for her family to support her.

I've noticed the twisting of feminism to mean anything a woman does is feminist because she's a woman. It also seems to mean sex work is a feminist choice.

A couple of pop stars are also on Onlyfans, Kate Nash and Lily Allen. It seems to be becoming mainstream.

So, as far as I understand, for these particular women they think they're going to make millions out of this on Onlyfans. I guess they think they'll do this and never have to work again. They've absorbed the messaging that this is empowering and are probably dissociating, in the way a lot of prostituted women do, to mentally get through it.

I don't know why the families are "supporting" these women but it's probably because they think they can't stop them and don't want to publicly shame them.

Bonnie Blue's parents openly advertise her services. That goes beyond not wanting to shame her

This woman has apparently earned 2m already from Onlyfans. Yes, she's definitely doing it for the money.

It is self harm OP. And it is not ‘empowering’ at all. What ‘power’ does she gain from this?

Feminism is about equality, dignity and respect for women.

What's so dignified about a thousand men using your body as a fleshlight? Do you believe these men see her as an equal and respect her?

Feminism is not about the sexual objectification of women, it's the opposite. It's not about catering to men and their desires, it's the opposite.

You can be a feminist in theory and do anything, but obviously prostitution is not a feminist act. Less extreme behaviours like wearing make-up, dyeing one's hair, removing body hair are all un-feminist, but I wouldn't say you need to be perfect to be a feminist. Maybe that makes it meaningless...

When labelling "un-feminist acts", my opinion is based on whether the behaviour is performed to provide immediate comfort for one person but will negatively impact future generations of women. For example, removing my body hair or wearing make-up might make me feel better about myself right now, but it prolongs the pressure on younger women to conform to these same standards. I choose to bear some of the burden of change so that my niece, for instance, doesn't have to sacrifice as much!

jeaux90 · 07/12/2024 09:09

Liberal feminism is the biggest lie ever sold to women.

The only people it benefits are men.

But I'm an old school 2nd wave feminist.

yohohoCrimbo · 07/12/2024 09:10

khaitai · 07/12/2024 06:09

It's very popular among younger generations to think feminism is just about supporting women to do whatever they want. That sex work is work and empowering. I've seen these types of "feminists" talking about this particular woman online and the cognitive dissonance is quite amazing to watch.

Anyone with a deeper reading of feminism knows that no this is obviously not feminist. Feminism is about liberating women, all women, from oppression. In a world where Dominique Pelicots exist, this kind of behaviour is dangerous and degrading not only to this particular woman but to all women.

Well said.

I also agree that it's a form of self harm.

Salmonisraw · 07/12/2024 09:10

Why is it only ever women who need to be empowered.

Screamingabdabz · 07/12/2024 09:18

No. What she is doing does not bring a single thing to promote female equality and equity. Not a single woman will benefit from this. Even her. It will wreck her, long term.

She says she ‘chooses’ to do this but it’s clear the rules of the game are very much set by the patriarchy.

"Your body, your choice " is a fucking con. Women and girls have been fed this line for decades now in the pretence that's it's empowering them. It's a systemic con job that these people have utterly fallen for and men are fucking delighted.

It's the same degradation of our bodies though, the same usage, the same misogyny, the same disrespect of women as old as time, only this time, they've been conned into thinking it's fucking empowering.

These men are just fucking an orifice. Not one will take this girl home to meet their families, or would want her as a life partner.

1,000 men? Fills me with disgust and bile and fear. Someone's father, son, brother. 😞

This. Every word of this.

What's the difference between being a fresher and a man over 18?

How crap in bed are the guys? The time alone for 1000 guys in 24 hours is 1m.44 secs each. Allow a bit time for...well...getting it in, even as a young man not sure I could get there quite as quick as that. 😂

My thoughts exactly

This, how can it be feminist and empowering for women to sell sex to men, but totally the opposite for men to pay for it?
