Alert for storm darragh

Did anyone else's phone get an alert for the storm? Scared the life out of me! I guess they've finally got it up and running

I almost jumped out of my skin! I had a different phone when the test one happened, so I didn’t get that and I had never heard the sound before.

Would it still sound with ‘do not disturb’ on? (interested after the cinema comment as I put my phone on this rather than just silent)

Nextdoor55 · 06/12/2024 21:46

No-one go out tomorrow morning. Batton down the hatches. Hopefully we'll all be ok

JustSaltPlease · 06/12/2024 21:48

I'm in south wales and I had 3 of the bloody things on one device!!

Wind is really picking up here. Scary to think that it's going to get much worse

WoolyMammoth55 · 06/12/2024 21:48

Mine was on silent and it came through loud and clear - very unusual sound, I thought something electrical was malfunctioning in the room? We're in Somerset in the red zone and I've got a torch to hand and am charging everything in case the power goes out, and have filled some water bottles and the kettle too - sometimes the water gets shut off in our hood and am alone with the kids so want to cover my bases. Hope it turns out to be nothing much but definitely quite alarming!

Fill the bath too so you have water to flush the loo if your water sometimes goes off

Plenty of people around here seem to have had it.

I disabled it on my phone when they first released it so no alert here. I'm well aware I'm in the red zone without nanny state telling me.

You're not though, are you? Without the nanny state (specifically, the Met Office) there wouldn't be any red zone, or any severe weather alert at all.

HereForTheAnimals · 06/12/2024 21:57

I'm glad I've read this because I would've assumed it meant war. I got it when they tested, and it made me feel uneasy. If I got it randomly I'd straight away catastrophise. If mine ever does go off I'll know not to immediately panic now. Hope you all stay safe.

Edited for spelling mistakes

Oooh no. Not that I know of.

Salome61 · 06/12/2024 21:59

Stay safe everyone. I'm in the NE and a lot of places are closing/cancelling events.

MrsCarson · 06/12/2024 22:05

I wondered what the hell! when it came thought on my phone and Apple Watch at the same time. The cat jumped out of his skin poor beggar.
My friend online thought it was some sort of war and bombs alert till she read it properly.
It's windy but not too bad just yet. We're at the top of a hill, with big windows facing the sea and the river, and the usual windy weather hits us right on. I doubt I'll get much sleep.

hereandthere72 · 06/12/2024 22:15

The whole bloody restaurants went off, and then on and off for nearly half an hour! We aren't even in an amber area! Thought I'd disabled it but forgot I had upgraded my phone! Shut it off now! 🤣🤣

Noseybookworm · 06/12/2024 22:16

Betterthanitseems · 06/12/2024 21:02

I've never had an alert,I'm.wondering now hsve i it disabled or something. I am in an amber area

Have a look in your phone settings under Safety and Emergency and then Emergency Alerts. I have it disabled since Covid as my anxiety was bad enough without it!

Tamuchly · 06/12/2024 22:25

Well I had just got on the scales at the leisure centre when it went off so initially I thought I’d broken the scales 😳

ChewbaccasMrs · 06/12/2024 22:27

No alert here because we're not in the red zone but we are going to be getting some fast winds so my DH has made sure everything in the garden is secure.

Keeping my fingers crossed and praying that all of you in the effected areas are safe and that none of your homes are effected.

Mummyratbag · 06/12/2024 22:46

In mid Cornwall we are predicted 72mph winds but only amber.. no alert. It sounds wild out there. We are staying put.

AInightingale · 06/12/2024 22:49

CissOff · 06/12/2024 21:19

We had it on several devices and it scared the shite out of us. DD thought it was a nuclear attack warning!

DH and I have been in the garden securing as much as we can. We are in S Wales and have been battered by storms lately 😭

Yes, it's terrible timing with Putin threatening us with god knows what. I think a text without some massive klaxon might have been more appropriate, are we going to start getting these all the time now?

Cheersmedears123 · 06/12/2024 23:00

We’re in the amber zone and got an alert. We had an alert earlier in the year so I recognised the sound when my phone started blaring.

FOJN · 06/12/2024 23:05

I got the message but didn't hear the phone make a noise. I'm more concerned about potential flooding than the wind.

TheDotMatriX · 06/12/2024 23:08

Yes went off on both watches and three phones in the car when DH was driving! Honestly, nearly crashed the car, which is ironic really, for a message promoting safety.

Maybe it should start quietly. I was so shocked I swiped it away without reading fully.

We’ve managed for years with the met office issuing its alerts and most of us affected by them have noticed them.

Now the Govt have this klaxon thing I expect they will use it regularly. When it is really needed ( nuclear war) we’ll all be so blasé about it, it’ll be ignored.

Peopleinmyphone · 06/12/2024 23:13

I was driving and thought the noise was coming from my car, would have been very ironic if I crashed.

MistressoftheDarkSide · 06/12/2024 23:14

Ooh, it's getting pretty windy here now - first time I've been really able to hear it in the 6 months I've lived here....

MissCherryBrandy · 06/12/2024 23:16

Hopefully this dies down soon, instead of escalating. We've just lost the roof of our shed. It's really bad here, massive gusts.

Ah, sorry to hear that - yes, I hope it dies down for everyone's sake x

Take care x
