Did anyone else's phone get an alert for the storm? Scared the life out of me! I guess they've finally got it up and running

We got one while we were at the cinema watching wicked. Everyone's phone was going off during defying gravity!

Kind of ironic.

TheHateIsNotGood · 06/12/2024 20:19

Yes OP, I understand the thread is about people getting terrified, etc over the mobile phone noise and not the actual content of the warning. Just saying that not everyone is 'jumping out of their skins' at the mobile alert. Young adult ds upstairs got one too and no terror was invoked up there either.

sunrisesunshine · 06/12/2024 20:20

Yes I got the alert here in Llandudno North Wales, as did my family/friends who live all over Wales.

5twomany · 06/12/2024 20:21

I nearly shat myself 😂
my 11 year old was really calm and just rolled his eyes and told me it was the alert about the weather
We are in West Wales getting ready to get battered tonight
people were panic buying in the supermarkets today it was just manic

Elphame · 06/12/2024 20:22

Plenty of people around here seem to have had it.

I disabled it on my phone when they first released it so no alert here. I'm well aware I'm in the red zone without nanny state telling me.

p1l1l · 06/12/2024 20:23

Mine, DM's and DD's went off simultaneously. It didn't scare me as luckily I was looking at the screen as it came up. DS at uni also got the alert.

AInightingale · 06/12/2024 20:24

I am in the north of Ireland, the east coast right beside the sea, and so far there's...nothing. A bit of drizzle after rain earlier, but quite a calm night. So it's still probably pretty far away. Won't hit Wales or nw England until tomorrow by the looks of things.

89redballoons · 06/12/2024 20:25

I got it even though I'm technically in the amber zone. My phone, DH's personal phone and his work phone all went off at the same time, it was momentarily terrifying.

My son's fifth birthday party is tomorrow, really hoping it can go ahead Sad

KimberleyClark · 06/12/2024 20:26

Got a red alert in Cardiff.

LlynTegid · 06/12/2024 20:27

It is one of those things where if the Met Office play down something as happened in 1987, they will rightly be criticised. I can understand that an alert or even an unexpected call can be a surprise, the one thing I would say is that is was around most people's teatime, thankfully not late evening or in the middle of the night.

AllHisCaterpillarFriends · 06/12/2024 20:29

I grew up in an area with high winds. We always slept in the downstairs in high winds.

That's the plan tonight now we are in the red area. Will have torches and going to fill a thermos and try and make it fun.

I have happy memories of dreadful storms as a child.adee respect my parents as even when we lost the roof they made it all an adventure.

Pippinsdiary · 06/12/2024 20:31

I got it just as my 3 yo had stopped screaming and was falling asleep. My husband got it just as he got our 4mo to sleep 😂 worst timing ever

JenniferBooth · 06/12/2024 20:34

Hope they sent some alerts to Uk Power Networks so we dont get a repeat of Christmas/Winter 2013 when they seemed to be unaware that there was a storm coming.

volingaround · 06/12/2024 20:35

No, but we had a tornado up the road from us last night and didn't get a flipping alert for that, but then I guess it's only Yorkshire 😑

Theunamedcat · 06/12/2024 20:36

Dd got one she lives in Wales though we haven't had one in the Midlands

Th UK gets tornadoes all the time and there are never alerts for those.

wintergolds · 06/12/2024 20:41

Ha! Those alerts do make you panic the first time you get them. We got one in Romania while driving through the mountains to say a bear had been seen near where were.. It was very loud!

Didn't get one for the storm (South East).

getthosetitsup · 06/12/2024 20:42

Both phone and Apple Watch went off and frightened the 💩 out of me until I worked out what was going on!

A nanny state that tries to save lives? The trouble is, it can often be the people who think they don’t need to be directed who end up needing to be rescued.

SoRuff63 · 06/12/2024 20:45

Red alert here near Totnes in south Devon. Poor dog went crazy as it was a new unusual sound. We thought it was our new smoke detector initially! Can hear the wind roaring around the chimney. Hope everyone stays safe.

Jeeze really? Was there much damage??

MistressoftheDarkSide · 06/12/2024 20:48

Well I'm in Dorset and haven't had one. We do tend to have a bit of a micro weather system where I am though so not surprised. Shall go and poke the storm tracker site and see if we're just lagging....

Harshtruth1111 · 06/12/2024 20:49

Depends where you live.
My work place got flooded a few months back when we had a rain warning.
So sandbags are put out there.
But
Our neighbours roof tiles a few years ago fell onto our car. So just avoid going outdoors if you can.
You may see trees in the road tomorrow. Also put bricks or heavy sandbags on your bins or even your trampoline etc.

cardibach · 06/12/2024 20:50

Everyone I know in this area got it. I did not. Rude.

The tornado and storm research organisation has an alert for another one or two possible tornadoes over the weekend. It's nigh on impossible to predict where they'll touch down I guess (although the US seems to manage to warn people) the UK in general doesn't seem to take them very seriously. I know it's not the midwest, but still they can be very dangerous!
