AIBU to tell SIL to get fucked?

SIL asked what we were up to this weekend. I said, as another storm is on the way, we were going to have some mulled wine and a cheeseboard while watching Christmas films. She then did cat's bum face and said she thought it was so gross that people do nothing but stuff their faces with unhealthy food in the run up to Christmas. She said this, by the way, in front of her teenage daughter who has struggled badly with body image issues. I said, lightly, that I'm very sleep deprived due to my velcro 5 month old and, as last Christmas (and for the whole 9 months of my pregnancy) I had hyperemesis gravidarum and was too queasy to enjoy any nice food, this Christmas I fully intend to eat all the cheese and all the chocolate. She rolled her eyes at me and said "whatever makes you feel better about yourself".

I said nothing but I wanted to tell her to fuck off tbh. AIBU?

My money's on that not being the exact wording.

You have never had a competitive undereater in your family. Lucky, lucky you.

WillimNot · 05/12/2024 17:31

This is an appropriate time to tell her to get fucked.

Mine are like that and it's exactly why I have fuck all to do with them. Too much drama for dramas sake.

Enjoy all the cheese @Pooliny in fact throw some chocolate in as well!

Pooliny · 05/12/2024 17:16

Well it was, but is there a form of wording that would make it more acceptable in your eyes?

I think people are finding it so hard to believe because it's astonishing a person would actually say that to someone

She sounds horrible, op. In that situation I wouldn't be able to keep my mouth closed.

MuthaHubbard · 05/12/2024 17:36

An ex colleague of mine has said similar about folk stuffing their faces at Xmas - this led to us calling each other 'Fat Lazy Christmas Bastards' every time we talk about Xmas food in the office

MuchuseasaChocolateTeapot · 05/12/2024 17:42

Whenever we have the more challenging vistors around (aka MIL), we play Bingo. We all get to choose 3 topics/phrases/complaints/mean digs that you know are coming and the first one to tick all 3 off wins. Prizes are usually getting out of household chores. Maybe a bit mean but MIL is far too self absorbed to notice!

Oh yes, because eating a cheeseboard one weekend means you're "stuffing your face with nothing but unhealthy food in the run up to Christmas". I bet she'd love to do that but must have food issues too. You should have said that you do it at other times of the year too!

GCAcademic · 05/12/2024 17:44

She rolled her eyes at me and said "whatever makes you feel better about yourself".

"Yes, I guess I'm lucky that it just takes a bit of cheese to make me feel better about myself. Rather than having to resort to being a complete bitch to other people. That must be difficult for you."

pictoosh · 05/12/2024 17:44

It's the "whatever makes you feel better about yourself" that would get my back right up. Out and out nasty. What's her problem?

pictoosh · 05/12/2024 17:47

I mean seriously, I know none of us condone violence but you can see why someone would be tempted to issue a punch to the face.

Cornettoninja · 05/12/2024 17:47

What’s she doing this weekend that’s so worthy? Dishing out sleeping bags and hot soup to the homeless? Polishing her spinach? forcing her family on a ‘bracing’ hike in the middle of a storm?

shes a dickhead and deserves nothing less than utter derision if you have to keep the peace for family relations sake. In fact, given your description of your nieces, I’d say it was your duty to demonstrate to them that their mother is batshit and give them a bit of balance in their lives.

oh and put together a hamper filled with utter rubbish, and cheese, as their Christmas gift.

I like to think I’d be quick enough to say ‘well yes, it does thanks, that’s why I look forward to it. What are you looking forward to?’

Oh that's brilliant.
You can be my advisor. Ta.

YABU if you're not planning to add mince pies to your menu. I'm currently obsessed with the Waitrose frangipane topped variety 😋

NonPlayerCharacter · 05/12/2024 17:59

I've got some competitive and performative undereaters in my family, OP. If people don't believe your story, they definitely wouldn't believe mine. All true, though.

Take heart that it means some people really do live free of this shite.

LiarLiarKnickersAblaze · 05/12/2024 18:04

I always think with these things, I could diet and look slimmer but people like this are nasty inside and out. No cure for that.

Oooh 👀 heads to Waitrose

Can I just say, this sounds like such a nice way to spend a miserable-weather weekend. I’m really envious and might have to make similar plans for myself!

My favourite quotation from MN, umpteen years ago. "You give your child GRAPES?! They're literally bombs of sugar!"

Enjoy the cheese.

ANiceBigCupOfTea · 05/12/2024 18:15

She reminds me of my BiL's (thankfully) ex partner.
She would turn her nose up and make comments because I enjoyed wine at the weekend. It's so bad you know, so high in calories and so unhealthy.
Funnily enough she didn't like it when I shared my opinion with her that the amount of drugs she shoved up her nose every weekend was a curious choice for the health conscious person.

Fuck you, where's the Foie?

I said started. That’s later in the evening. And a merry Fuckmas to you too! 🤶🏻

AnnaDelvorkina · 05/12/2024 18:17

Good grief send her to France and let her tell us Frenchies that cheese is unhealthy…

You won’t see her again.

Viviennemary · 05/12/2024 18:18

Both of you sound as annoying as each other tbh.

I would have replied "and you keep running us down at every opportunity, as that's clearly what makes YOU feel better about yourself. Seriously, crack on - I couldn't give a witch's tit what you think."

But I'm a crabby old git.

Edited

This.

Enjoy your yummy food, new baby and all the movies.
