To think this attack on London Jewish schoolchildren should have been headline news

I have been waiting for this story to go mainstream, and I’m shocked that it hasn’t.

So far, it seems only the Daily Mail has reported on it - https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-14142235/amp/Jewish-children-terrified-thugs-London-bus-rocks-Israel.html.

When are we going to start taking the threats against Jews in the UK seriously and actually do something about it?

Thugs throw rocks at bus with Jewish children and yell 'f*** Israel'

Students at JFS in Kenton, north London, were travelling on buses operated by Uno, when the vehicles were set upon by a group of teenage thugs at a bus stop in Edgware, on Wednesday.

I hadn’t read or heard about this and am horrified.
How anyone can think it’s acceptable to deliberately harm and frighten children?
Targeted for being Jewish???? WTAF!
Behaviour like this needs to be stopped and punished along with educating the perpetrators.
It makes me shudder to think this could escalate.
Hitler gradually removed the rights of Jewish people to move around freely, work, live and socialise.
Then he graduated to genocide.
We cannot stand by and marginalise people with beliefs different to our own.
Jewish people are not the threat.

PumpkinsAndCoconuts · 04/12/2024 09:29

You’re 100% right.. these poor children.

HopeMumsnet · 04/12/2024 09:31

Hi all,
Thanks to those who have reported the posts that concerned them on this thread, as you can see we have removed a fair few. We're content for the thread to continue however we would politely request that everyone reads the newspaper article itself prior to posting, as it appears to clear up possible misapprehensions.

LBFseBrom · 04/12/2024 09:31

I'd read about it a couple of times and I don't read the Mail if I can help it.

It is simply appalling, I hope at least some of those who perpetrated the offence were identifiable.

No one thinks Jewish people are a threat. I absolutely do think the far right are a threat. I also think they are impacting governments around the world and our own population. We should be standing for liberal, democratic values which include the right to self determination, the right to practice your religion without fear, the right to live in peace with all, the right to a family life.

The very same beliefs that mean I am very concerned about Palestinians is the reason I am appalled by Jewish school children being attacked. I honestly think this is a really common view. People who are genuinely concerned about Palestine are absolutely not okay with Jewish people being attacked or scared either! No one should be living in fear. Full stop.

toucheee · 04/12/2024 09:26

You think anti-Muslim attacks are headline news?

Stop playing off communities against each other.

The attack on the Jewish school kids was deplorable, as is any racist attack on any community.

I didn’t say they weren’t deplorable. I didn’t say attacks on any groups are ok.

I said some groups are deemed more newsworthy.

Switcher · 04/12/2024 09:33

Some people have hate in their hearts. They will be punished one day.

Lettherebejustice · 04/12/2024 09:34

For anyone who hasn't read the article i have highlighted this below. This is shocking and unacceptable!

A witness revealed: 'They were also swearing at us, saying, 'Fck Israel, nobody likes you. Fck off you btches.'*
Another youngster who was involved in the incident said some of the children ran off the bus to escape the attack, while others cowered under their seats.
They were 'completely terrified', they said, adding that the thugs were seen filming the incident on their phones.

HappyTwo · 04/12/2024 09:35

Poor kids how terrifying for them.

Annabella92 · 04/12/2024 09:38

Yes it should be reported but its not going to be because it doesn't serve the interests of power who plan to continue importing foreign populations - and guess what? This also imports their ethnic conflicts to our soil.

These poor children must have been so frightened. I don't know how we can deal with these tensions.

Echobelly · 04/12/2024 09:39

As a Jewish parent I must say I am glad my kids aren't at a Jewish school right now (they were in primary). This is an awful attack and must have been very frightening.

I feel it important to separate this kind of incident from justified protest against the actions of the Israeli government. One of my problems with the daily mails of this world is they tend to use nasty incidents like this to try to silence protest and brand it all as antisemitism. Netanyahu has made all Jews and Jewish sites around the world targets with his warmongering, sadly.

SunQueen24 · 04/12/2024 09:42

It’s an absolutely abhorrent act, but I don’t think it’s fair to say nothing is done in response. In the UK I get the impression that all bigotry, racism and acts of violence are taking seriously. There is more tolerance here than elsewhere in the world.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 04/12/2024 09:43

Fuck me, that’s your take on this? Kids who’ve likely been nowhere near Palestine and have no part in the horrific events going on there are attacked as they leave school, purely because of their religion and your response is ‘I’m sure they’ll get over it’. What’s wrong with you?

///

This. When I was about 8 we lived in N Ireland (dad was in the army) and to get to school our bus (army kids only) had to drive through a small majority catholic town. On several occasions we had adults throwing bricks and metal piping at windows, often breaking them. It was fucking terrifying every time it happened.

Deathraystare · 04/12/2024 09:43

I suppose the media thought Greg Wallace was more news worthy. He is not but still...

neverthmore · 04/12/2024 09:44

Fuck sake, some of the posters on this thread, minimising an overtly racist attack with ' Well, that's just kids for you!'

Presumably in the 70s and 80s these posters would also have been waving away racist attacks on south Asian and black heritage kids with a sprightly intoned, 'Children will be children!'

Or maybe they wouldn't. Maybe its just attacks on Jews they refuse to see as racist. Its probably the latter, isn't it?

TriesNotToBeCynical · 04/12/2024 09:45

ByMerryKoala · 04/12/2024 09:19

God, the gas lighting on this thread is turbo charged.

So, the anti-Semitism should be ignored because 1) it's just a facsimile of anti-Semitism. 2) if it is anti-Semitism it's best for Jewish people to pretend it isn't because a) it will be worse for them because they will be more fearful b) it might encourage other people to pretend that they are anti-Semitic.

Shame on the lot of you.

Edited

I didn't say it shouldn't be reported, and dealt with if possible. I just said it perhaps wasn't national news, because such misbehaviour is so common. When more serious attacks or attacks by adults occur I should very much like to hear about them.

More serious than a bus being pelted by rocks, having the thugs get on board the bus, terrorise the kids on board while filming their aggression...something a bit more juicy than that for you?

Ivyy · 04/12/2024 09:47

Sickening. And no doubt what the thugs felt was appropriate for them to record will be popping up on bloody Tiktok

When such attacks against black and asian children were common (actually they still are) we didn't hear about them in national news either.

What an insidious piece of misdirection.

I was responding to posters minimising this as ' kids will be kids' instead of condemning it as blatant racism. As you well know.

Your comment is irrelevant to my point.

If people want to take a stand against rising anti-Semitism in this country, they can join the March Against Anti-Semitism in London this weekend.

https://antisemitism.org/march/#:~:text=Sunday%2C%208th%20December%202024%20at,feel%20like%20they%20are%20drowning.

In case anyone is concerned about their safety at the march there will be police and CST (community security trust) there.

Turnups · 04/12/2024 09:54

VestPantsandSocks · 04/12/2024 08:29

The point is that ALL children in the world should have the safety to go to school.

Contrary to belief, I am not anti semetic, I highly respect Jewish people for their commitment to their faith and count Jewish people amongst my friends.

The word is antisemitic.

As you may need to use it again in your denials, you might as well get it right.

Silvan · 04/12/2024 09:54

Greyrocked · 04/12/2024 09:02

It’s really sad. I live in a very multicultural area.
There is a lot of fear amongst the Jewish community. State Jewish schools have extremely heavy security - think massive security guards, 10ft fences and metal detectors. Some of this fear is clearly justified. But I think the level of fear also perpetuates fear too. I try to be friendly to neighbours and they look at me like I am going to attack them. It’s really sad actually.
In my area statistically Muslim women are the most likely to experience hate crime than Jewish women, but they are much happier to interact with neighbours. It’s statistically very few and far between that Jews are attacked in my area, but the fear is clearly through the roof. I’m not sure I think a media storm for every crime against Jewish people is supportive to the Jewish community’s wellbeing. I think it adds to this sense that they are under siege.

This simply isn’t the case. I have very strong views about the state of Israel’s government. I certainly don’t hold Jewish people in the UK responsible for the actions of the state of Israel, anymore than I held Muslims reponsible for 7/7. Even if they were strong supporters of all the actions of Israel, I would want to try to listen and have a conversation if they wanted to (not whilst I pop to the shop! Mainly I want to have neighbourly conversations about the weather!).

I know this would be the vast, vast majority of people in my area’s views, regardless of our politics.

The people who attacked the bus are thugs and I doubt have much real concern for Palestinians.

I’m really sad that the fear is so great there is a very high amount of isolation at the moment. More than in years past.

I don’t know about your area specifically, but numerically there are more crimes against Muslims than Jewish people. But the Muslim population is much larger. If you look at crimes per 1000 population Jewish people are much more likely to be victims of hate crime, which obviously impacts how fearful they are. Any individual Jewish person is more likely to be a victim of hate crime and at the very least will know someone else who has been.

Implying that if this were a bus of Muslim kids then it would be headline news is stoking hatred and prejudice.

You know exactly what you were doing. Why not focus on this incident being reported? It’s bad enough on its own.
