Just a few concerns about this whole GW thing. Caveat: I do not condone behaviour that is illegal.

  1. It does kind of look like a whole bunch of privileged TV luvvies are clamouring to denounce someone with really quite humble roots. I grew up in London and am constantly paranoid about how I come across to my mainly middle class colleagues. The thing is, middle class and privileged people operate by a set of unwritten rules. It’s like a full time job in itself trying to emulate their way of interacting, lest you be called out for not being ‘nice’ enough or doing something odd to them, like forgetting to start an email with ‘Hope you are well?’. Only, they won’t let you know to your face that you’ve accidentally been too sharp or direct, or maybe that your joke wasn’t woke enough - no, that stuff just goes straight to HR.
  2. The equality act 2010 makes it the employer’s responsibility to prevent sexual harassment in the workplace. Why wasn’t all this lewd stuff dealt with? GW said that no one had made a formal complaint. Again, it makes me wonder whether the middle class luvvies just didn’t want to call things out at the time because it’s ‘beneath’ them to even consider doing something about it.
  3. Even though he’s apologised, the public doesn’t think that’s good enough. It’s like only perfect people get to keep their careers. Woe betide you if you said something crass on twitter 10 years ago, or got caught speeding or something.

Of course, lots of you would want to shout me down over this, but you know what? We’re all mums here and many of us have sons. Boys and young men do and say crass things. GW hasn’t raped or systematically abused anyone. It doesn’t make what’s happened right, but I also don’t think it’s right that swarms of pitch-fork waving strangers get to play judge, jury and executioner. I’m a big fan of forgiveness. Am I the only one?

I’m sorry, @Livelovebehappy - are you really saying you don’t think any of the other things he is alleged to have done, are inappropriate? If so, I am gobsmacked.

Of course the other stuff is inappropriate. But I don’t think they’re sackable offences. I really don’t. If he’s making sexual innuendos, it’s merely an annoyance and an eye rolling situation, but I honestly wouldn’t lose sleep over it. It would annoy me more than it would upset me. Some other stuff, like the bum touching of one specific person, isn’t even confirmed - just someone saying they ‘thought’ he might have touched someone’s bum - although the woman whose bum he allegedly may have touched hasn’t come forward. Agreed, an unpleasant man, but that’s all.

He won't do it again, let the man be.

Yes you did, Greg, and no we won't let you get away with it.

What do you think about gregg Wallace pushing his penis against a woman's bottom, groping another woman's bottom and lowering his trousers in front of a woman in the workplace? Is that the sort of thing you do in the workplace? If so I'd stop if I were you.

I find it utterly repulsive. And unfortunately I find it unsurprising having worked in the entertainment industry, where women have historically been forced to endure all the micro aggressions, the jokes /the banter/the innuendo/ the prioritising of the ‘personalities’ for YEARS.
I simply find it interesting that only now we see how these small incursions contribute to a bigger picture, and how we’ll look back at other shows/ people now our eyes are opened to it.

PotOfViolas · 03/12/2024 23:41

GW has said there have been ‘only 13 complaints’ across his entire career and none of them came to anything. He says that as if 13 complaints is a small number and as if no one taking action at the time means there were no grounds for complaint. That is massively missing a massive point - 13 women (and now more) found his behaviour objectionable and no one lifted a finger to protect them, allowing him to normalise his behaviour and abuse further women. Middle aged middle class women who were successfully able to work with other non-arsehole colleagues. He’s the common denominator here, not the female demographic of the industry he works in.

He is the problem, patriarchy is the problem, not the women complaining about his abuse. If you can’t see that then you are also part of the problem.

The BBC have cancelled the Xmas Masterchef Specials - it’s game over for GW.

'Women of a certain age'. Whatever I thought about him before, that was a beacon of enlightenment.

He's definitely getting a bigger beasting than RB - what happened to him and all those allegations?

ACynicalDad · 03/12/2024 23:44

I'd be happy if he is never on TV again, I'm sure he's got enough for a decent retirement. There needs to be no tolerance of this or it will carry on.

They won't see it, they don't want to see it. For some reason they want to pretend it was only confined to inappropriate jokes (with is still not okay) so that they can act like a bunch of cool girls and defend the out and proud misogynst.

I wonder if Masterchef’s had its day or if he’ll be replaced. Apparently Giles Coren auditioned for the gig when Wallace got it.

OptimisticMermaid · 03/12/2024 23:49

Early in my career i worked in the civil service. A guy in the office put pornographic pictures all round the office. Large pictures of naked women on the ceiling. He said we just have to not look up. All the women in the office took it to management who said it was ok. We should calm down. Someone said ‘myname’ mustn’t mind as she is saying nothing. I was so disgusted and embarrassed i couldn’t say anything. That guy then went to work for police service and there was an article on the news soon after about someone being sacked for putting pornographic pictures on the walls. I’m sure it was him. This was 35 years ago. I still remember the feeling of embarrassment and the lack of support from management and the inability to speak out.

But hardly any of the complaints are about innuendos, they're mostly him talking directly about sex acts or about how he isnt wearing underwear, or whatever. This isn't "Carry On Masterchef", it's just garden variety sexual harassment.

The police have sent the files to the CPS so have to wait and see. But I'm sure the RB supports will pop up soon enough to tell us it's all a witch-hunt.

Obviously, i support the women of a certain age speaking out about unspeakable behaviour.

But sadly there are always some women who are apologists for male entitlement, misogyny and abuse.
Shame on them.
