Just a few concerns about this whole GW thing. Caveat: I do not condone behaviour that is illegal.

  1. It does kind of look like a whole bunch of privileged TV luvvies are clamouring to denounce someone with really quite humble roots. I grew up in London and am constantly paranoid about how I come across to my mainly middle class colleagues. The thing is, middle class and privileged people operate by a set of unwritten rules. It’s like a full time job in itself trying to emulate their way of interacting, lest you be called out for not being ‘nice’ enough or doing something odd to them, like forgetting to start an email with ‘Hope you are well?’. Only, they won’t let you know to your face that you’ve accidentally been too sharp or direct, or maybe that your joke wasn’t woke enough - no, that stuff just goes straight to HR.
  2. The equality act 2010 makes it the employer’s responsibility to prevent sexual harassment in the workplace. Why wasn’t all this lewd stuff dealt with? GW said that no one had made a formal complaint. Again, it makes me wonder whether the middle class luvvies just didn’t want to call things out at the time because it’s ‘beneath’ them to even consider doing something about it.
  3. Even though he’s apologised, the public doesn’t think that’s good enough. It’s like only perfect people get to keep their careers. Woe betide you if you said something crass on twitter 10 years ago, or got caught speeding or something.

Of course, lots of you would want to shout me down over this, but you know what? We’re all mums here and many of us have sons. Boys and young men do and say crass things. GW hasn’t raped or systematically abused anyone. It doesn’t make what’s happened right, but I also don’t think it’s right that swarms of pitch-fork waving strangers get to play judge, jury and executioner. I’m a big fan of forgiveness. Am I the only one?

Okay.. so I think his jokes were ‘off’. I think he’s a twat. His comments about the women shows what a horrid attitude he has.

I am not sure the response is proportional.

And that’s what worries me about the situation.

Are you ok with him deliberately rubbing his crotch against someone when getting past? Confused

BlackChunkyBoots · 03/12/2024 20:41

OP hasn't been back.

Maybe she's learning something. I hope so.

BIossomtoes · 03/12/2024 20:42

OP hasn't been back.

Funny that.

Didn’t take Greg long to find Mumsnet, did it? Wonder what other threads tickle his fancy?

Well it is occupied by women of a certain age...

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 03/12/2024 20:42

RedToothBrush · 03/12/2024 20:39

Hmm.

I have a list of women who did.

The literate amongst us can read it.

People really do see what they want to see.

And some of their posts are making me lose the will...

AlexP24 · 03/12/2024 18:29

I absolutely agree with you OP. The way people are so quick to pour hate on someone and ruin their lives is very upsetting to me. There is no forgiveness and no understanding of where he is coming from. His statement was ill advised (or rather, not advised) but clearly came from a place of anger and upset. I feel very sorry for him, and his family/children. I hope they are ok, knowing what we know about how suicide is a very real threat when people are hounded by the media.

Have you seen the fresh allegations?
What "place" do you have to be coming from to do those things?

RedToothBrush · 03/12/2024 20:43

I always find it enlightening.

Ughouchargh · 03/12/2024 20:43

Men of all backgrounds harass women. No one gets a free pass. You are doing working class men a disservice if you are claiming they don't know not to harass and assault women.

The reports are that he has assaulted women who are vulnerable due to their relative status in their workplace, by grabbing their buttocks, rubbing his cock against them etc. If your child had and older superior do this to them at work what would you want to happen?

Huffalumps · 03/12/2024 20:44

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 03/12/2024 20:34

Are you honestly this naive, @Ihopeyouhavent?

You think a junior member of production staff, or an ordinary contestant could say that to a show’s star, and get away with it?

Don’t get me wrong - it would be amazing if women could do this, without risking their careers, but I’m not sure we are there yet.

There were male, equal-power witnesses throughout Greg's career at the BBC.

Why does it always come down to women standing up to male twats? What about the men?

derxa · 03/12/2024 20:44

GW’s behaviour is disgusting. He shouldn’t have aTV career here on in. Having said that he’s a sad act not a criminal.

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 03/12/2024 20:45

RedToothBrush · 03/12/2024 20:43

Soxersandbocks · 03/12/2024 20:28

I actually agree with you OP

You can't say anything these days without getting 'cancelled'

Everyone jumping on the bandwagon as usual 🙄

You understand what he actually did and said?
Naked apart from a sock?
Groping in a lift?
And so on.
Ypu can say what you like , but some things will mean people think you are an obnoxious twat and they won’t want anything to do with you. That you want the freedom to say those things without consequence tells us a fair amount about you - none of it good.

StaunchMomma · 03/12/2024 20:45

I can't stand him and, in fairness, I'd consider anyone who makes rape jokes in the workplace or makes comments about food tasting like 'my Aunt's cunt' to be more than a bit of a twat.

I really wouldn't care if I never saw him again BUT I do think the BBC are being really OTT not showing the Christmas special episodes he's already shot.

He may be grim but he hasn't hurt anyone (as far as we're aware).

RedToothBrush · 03/12/2024 20:46

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 03/12/2024 20:45

I really hope some of them are bots.

Unfortunately I don't think they all are.

ForPearlViper · 03/12/2024 20:46

For anyone saying 'well he's of his time' or 'he's of his class'. Even as far back as the 70s this guy with have had a 'disgusting twat' sign flashing over his head. There were a number of options to deal with it depending on your security in the workplace. You could punch him the face, you treat him like the dirt below you shoe, you superficially humour him and deride him behind his back. But then were sadly women in workplace who couldn't under any circumstances lose their job or weren't confident in dealing with this crap. And that is still there to this day. It is the job of adults in the workplace to deal with this shit.

I don't want a 'schoolboy who has never grown up' on my TV screen. If he has never grown up need to be back in the school room until he can behaves like a civilised adult. I watch Masterchef the Professionals. He is dealing with young men and women and should be a role model. To be honest, he has always made my flesh crawl and it would be no loss to the franchise if he was gone. Thankfully they are not cancelling the rest of the current series. It will be life changing for the finalists and this can't be spoiled due to a talentless dickhead.

Iwanttoliveiniriscottage · 03/12/2024 20:46

The fact he comes from humble roots is irrelevant. My husband has worked for thirty years with hundreds and thousands and women in his chosen field and has had not one single complaint made about his behaviour. Greg Wallace is a misogynist, sex pest, sexist, offensive and a pillock. He totally deserves to be cancelled at the very least. Personally I hope it goes further and he gets arrested. Going by the daily changing headlines there is clearly a lot more to come out about him. It’s getting more serious by the day.

LizzieSiddal · 03/12/2024 20:47

GE is a nasty title perv who has managed to cancel himself.

crumblingschools · 03/12/2024 20:47

@derxa sexual harassment is a crime

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 03/12/2024 20:48

You just know that if this thread was around when the Jimmy Saville stuff broke some of these people would be going "but he couldn't be that bad cause he did loads for charity".

derxa · 03/12/2024 20:48

crumblingschools · 03/12/2024 20:47

@derxa sexual harassment is a crime

Fair enough.

Caplin · 03/12/2024 20:49

Coming late to this. I once came across Greggggg about 10 years ago when my company were major sponsors of the Ideal Home Show and he was a regular famous face. We had to complain about him to organisers for his inappropriate ‘Bantz’ with our team which made them feel very uncomfortable. He did it to me having met him for just 30 seconds. Sorry, but he knows the impact he has and has known for years. He does it on purpose.

Brefugee · 03/12/2024 20:49

If I was subjected too, or over heard just a fraction of what I put up with in the workplace today, I'd hit the fucking roof. I'm a middle class, middle aged woman with the confidence to fight back. So different to my 21 year old self.

Same. I have reached the age/experience/position that i can step in - and i DO step in - if i witness anything approaching inappropriate behaviour. Last week i reminded someone that racism takes many guises, and over the years since i stopped worrying that i might lose my job - i have made bloody sure i stick up for the women who aren't in a position to stick up for themselves (for whatever reason). And i get called a withered old hag or a dragon. But not by the young women I'm supporting.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 03/12/2024 20:49

Why are women only coming forward now?

///

Why not come forward now? One allegation is easily (as has been bloody shown) brushed under the carpet.

Lots of allegations are much harder to quash.

And actually I don't think here should be anything like statute of limitations on something like this.

If a man doesn't want his twattish behaviour to come back and haunt him, don't be a handsy, misogynistic twat.

It's incredibly simple and many men somehow mange Confused

Powerofflower · 03/12/2024 20:50

I think I would turn it round and say there is a lot of men perhaps of a certain age who think sexist behaviour and innuendos are ok. I’m a mum of a daughter and do not think it is ok for her to grow up and be spoken to and leered at like I was. I am also the mum of boys and teach them it is not acceptable.

Cattery · 03/12/2024 20:53

He’s a repulsive misogynistic nobhead. Glad to see the back of him. Don’t know who he ever thought he was
