Just a few concerns about this whole GW thing. Caveat: I do not condone behaviour that is illegal.

  1. It does kind of look like a whole bunch of privileged TV luvvies are clamouring to denounce someone with really quite humble roots. I grew up in London and am constantly paranoid about how I come across to my mainly middle class colleagues. The thing is, middle class and privileged people operate by a set of unwritten rules. It’s like a full time job in itself trying to emulate their way of interacting, lest you be called out for not being ‘nice’ enough or doing something odd to them, like forgetting to start an email with ‘Hope you are well?’. Only, they won’t let you know to your face that you’ve accidentally been too sharp or direct, or maybe that your joke wasn’t woke enough - no, that stuff just goes straight to HR.
  2. The equality act 2010 makes it the employer’s responsibility to prevent sexual harassment in the workplace. Why wasn’t all this lewd stuff dealt with? GW said that no one had made a formal complaint. Again, it makes me wonder whether the middle class luvvies just didn’t want to call things out at the time because it’s ‘beneath’ them to even consider doing something about it.
  3. Even though he’s apologised, the public doesn’t think that’s good enough. It’s like only perfect people get to keep their careers. Woe betide you if you said something crass on twitter 10 years ago, or got caught speeding or something.

Of course, lots of you would want to shout me down over this, but you know what? We’re all mums here and many of us have sons. Boys and young men do and say crass things. GW hasn’t raped or systematically abused anyone. It doesn’t make what’s happened right, but I also don’t think it’s right that swarms of pitch-fork waving strangers get to play judge, jury and executioner. I’m a big fan of forgiveness. Am I the only one?

I find it hard to believe this post was written by a woman.

If it was, then OP your standards are below basement-level and you have a frankly offensive view about the capabilities and self-control of working class men.

Sort yourself out.

Well it was written by a woman - and you may find this hard to believe but we all have different opinions.

Whatthechicken · 03/12/2024 19:37

The video he did proved exactly what he thinks of women. The ‘middle class women of a certain age’ - he was trying to gain sympathy and invoke the image of a ‘Karen’ (fucking hate that, but that’s what he was latching onto). There isn’t much worse (in his and his fellow misogynists eyes) than being female, middle class, outspoken and middle aged. And of course he thinks he’s God’s gift, who can do so much better than a ‘woman of a certain age’ - so he see’s us as useless and also hopes that younger women would not like to be like us - which you wouldn’t if you were in your early 29s.

But his anger with certain women stems from the fact that we point his poor behaviour out and will not accept it. We see the uninvited sexual innuendos made to our younger colleagues, the pathetic power plays and we simply get in the way of the fun.

A few months ago, there was an extremely sexist and click bait headline that said ‘Why do women live so long after the menopause?’ Clearly suggesting we were past our worth, one of the talking points was that we are experienced and wise and we were needed to keep our daughters and grandchildren safe.

I think you're all being mean and nasty to poor OP

I mean under the equality act something something internalised misogyny something something but I'm one of the cool wives something something Jimmy saville would've been dealt with by the BBC instead of everyone being so nasty about him so obviously he can't have done anything!

And Russell brand and Rolf Harris! All those silly stuffy women and children who can't take a joke! Hashtag be kind!

And donald trump! His life ruined because of woke!

Hope that helps

Uricon2 · 03/12/2024 19:38

Boys and young men do and say crass things.

He's fucking 60 @Toodaloo1567

NoTouch · 03/12/2024 19:38

Has he apologised for flashing at the young woman who he asked to his dressing room to help with his bow tie? Or are we accepting having the top of your penis showing above your pulled down trousers was an accident?

Has he apologised for groping women in the workplace?

I heard the apology for calling them middle classed women of a certain age IF that offended them.

It is best to leave the investigation to conclude when no-one knows the extent of his behaviour yet.

BBC should waive all the NDAs contestant and employees had to sign and allow everyone to say their piece.

BlackJacktheDog · 03/12/2024 19:39

The problem with the talk of forgiveness or cancellation, when it comes to entertainers, is that their success is always at the whim of whether people want to watch them or not.

If and for whatever reason people stop enjoying seeing you on their telly, that will be the end of your career - especially true for those who do light entertianment stuff. It's not punishment or cancellation as such. It's simply that you are no longer entertaining enough to stay.

Ainsley Harriot must be shitting himself. Singlehandedly the most sleazy tv cookery show host in history. More smutty sexual innuendo than enyone.

Well if Frankie Boyle isn't cancelled (can't be - too left wing) then I think Ainsley will be safe.

JingleB · 03/12/2024 19:41
  1. He has not apologised for his obscene behaviour. He’s apologised “if anyone was offended” by his comments about middle class women on Sunday

  2. He has been reprimanded and rebuked repeatedly on various productions for his unacceptable language and behaviour.

  3. By pretending it’s a class thing, he blames those frigid middle class prudes while implying working class women are fine with comments about “tastes like my aunt’s cunt” AND that working class men are all raging misogynists like him.

  4. I’m a big fan of forgiveness. Am I the only one? Yes, OP, in the big wide world, only lovely generous you are a fan of forgiveness. The rest of us are vengeful harpies, insisting women are treated respectfully in the workplace.

Why?

OrangeSlices998 · 03/12/2024 19:41

A culture where sexual abuse and exploitation happens doesn’t just spring up out of nowhere. It’s the “jokes” that aren’t called out, it’s in men being unchallenged for being creepy and making women feel uncomfortable. I’m embarrassed for you OP

Inuendo and dirty jokes are not what is causing the problem for GW. How many more times?

Exactly, and he was in his forties or older when his alleged behaviour started. I'd be prepared to forgive in time someone in their twenties, who had not yet grown up, but not Gregg Wallace.

tigger1001 · 03/12/2024 19:43

What does cancelled mean?

I don't want to watch anything he's on (in fairness didn't watch much he was on before as thought he was a smarmy toad) so I'll choose to not watch programmes he's on.

Tv executives may well suspect many others won't watch him, so he becomes unemployable as a tv presenter. That's a natural consequence of his actions.

LatteLady · 03/12/2024 19:44

Balderdash! You are hearing from broadcasters or luvvies as you disarmingly describe them, because they are secure in their careers and can stick their heads above the parapet. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said of makeup artists, runners, production assistants, they rely on goodwill, trust and not being labelled as trouble. Would you have said the same about Harvey Weinstein who I had the misfortune to work with?

DrinkFeckArseBrick · 03/12/2024 19:44

It's not a middle class unwritten rule not to make sexual innuendo to colleagues

Not all men are crass

He didn't apologise, he basically did as you're doing and blamed women of a certain demographic for being too sensitive

There is no place in any workplace for that type of behaviour. Agree the producers should have done something but that doesn't absolve him if responsibility for not being a sleazy sexist creep

Fizbosshoes · 03/12/2024 19:45

Many women have made complaints , going back to 2008 I think.....so it's not new.

Instead of asking why didn't women complain?
Why not ask why no one was listening/doing anything about it?

Saying you worked with 4000 women over 20 years and "only" 13 complained, isn't exactly a win (well it was for him because he kept his job)

If you went for an annual review at a regular job, I'm not sure they'd applaud you for only having one complaint of sexual harrassment per year made against you (multiple years running)

He’s an odious little shit whose idea of a defense was misogynistic and ageist. If I never see his face again it will be too soon.

Hoppinggreen · 03/12/2024 19:48

let me get this right, GGreg should be forgiven because
Other men have raped women
He is working class
The BBC should have stopped him.

All those things are true but don't make a jot of difference, he deserves everything he gets.

Maray1967 · 03/12/2024 19:49

What are you talking about? He was given a lengthy warning years ago - and carried on!!!

Panofrashers · 03/12/2024 19:50

This sounds like a ‘you’ problem.
(And I’m working class too)

Anothernamechane · 03/12/2024 19:50

I'm extremely working class and think he's behaved like an utter cunt. It's actually galling that you're demeaning the people he's behaved badly towards calling them lovvies because they have the temerity to complain about him walking around naked, commenting on their tits, making rape jokes, bragging about having anal sex and making racist digs about people's names- while AT WORK.

As a working class woman I wouldn't get away with that behaviour at work and would have been sacked years ago

ilovesooty · 03/12/2024 19:51

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 03/12/2024 18:35

@ARichtGoodDram The number of people minimising this kind of behaviour and making out like it's a couple of misplaced jokes is more worrying tbh.

The number of women (assuming they are, nobody ever really knows who anyone is online) minimising it astounds me. It shouldn't but it does.

There are loads of ignorant women defending him on Facebook.

As for the OP - your bar is so low you'd have to limbo dance under it.
