Biden has pardoned his son because his conviction was a "miscarriage of justice".

Is this the total end of standards and even a pretence at integrity in public life? This is a president, who admittedly like all the others, allowed innocent people to be executed in their joke of a justice system. What a hypocrite.

The USA is one giant shitshow at the moment, it's so depressing.

In which case lots of things are silly, like hoping men might not be violent, or hoping that your husband doesn't cheat on you.

If it's just human nature you may as well screw everyone over. Which again begs the question why do people who think like this have any issue with Trump?

I think when it comes to men close to you like your husband, you have more control. Only you choose him, in most cases, and you can choose to get rid at any point.

There’s no point in just hoping men are better, as parents we have to put the work in with our sons to make them better. It’s not going to be a quick fix, if it’s ever fixed on a large scale. In terms of politicians, it’s not just men though, powerful women aren’t squeaky clean.

Just because bad behaviour from politicians is expected, it doesn’t mean people have to like it, hence the hatred of Trump. People need to be able to call out the negative behaviour of the opposition even if they vote for them though, but they rarely do. It’s like when people are a fan of a certain pop group, if they have a shit song, staunch supporters will still claim it’s good. It’s a common mentality.

People like to have a goodie and a baddie as a pp said, so whoever is worse is the baddie, and on here that’s Trump, and therefore Biden is automatically hailed as the goodie. It’s a strange way to think, but it’s common.

it cuts both ways. Sometimes choosing a goodie and a baddie is a sign of childish thinking. Other times, it’s just a sign of having a working moral compass. Sometimes people need to judge the lesser of two evils, while understanding that even the “good guys” are deeply flawed.

This is one of those times. The Democrats are about as corrupt and incompetent as most political parties in the western world. The Republicans, on the other hand, have uniformly supported a man that recently attempted an insurrection to hold on to power. They chose this man over several other viable candidates. They refused to impeach him in the immediate aftermath of the insurrection when doing so would have barred him from holding office again. And they have even purged the Party of officials who continued to oppose him.

It’s somewhat understandable that a plurality of voters in the US supported Trump out of hatred of the incumbent government, an outcome that has been repeated throughout the Western world. What’s less acceptable is for educated people in another country to pretend there’s some equivalence between the two sides.

MrsDamonSalvatore · 02/12/2024 08:33

I don’t blame him one bit. After Trump has driven a coach and horses through the American justice system and has lied repeatedly and shown zero respect for the law, I’d do it too in Biden’s shoes. Trump has indicated he’s going to punish political opponents, so why should Biden leave his son at the mercy of a system which has been corrupted already and is only going to get worse?

TankFlyBossW4lk · 02/12/2024 08:33

Oh for goodness sakes. What do you expect. There's a convicted felon at the helm. He's a paedophile and a career criminal. He's led an insurrection, which makes him a traitor. And you want to make a big thing about a man protecting his child against a megalomaniac?

Honestly, I think Mumsnet is full of hate spreading right wing shills at the moment.

AncientAndModern1 · 02/12/2024 08:33

Trump has already made it clear that all investigations into his crimes are over. He has pardoned himself. He’s promised to pardon all the J6 rioters. He previously pardoned his daughter’s criminal father in law and has now made him ambassador to France. It’s the shit US system of politicised ‘justice’ plus presidents having this power like an absolute monarchy which is crazy but it’s hardly new. Clinton pardoned his half-brother.

Or maybe some of are aware that this kind of nepotism is a threat to democracy an inexcusable because of someone else's actions.

Seems like you're the one spreading the hate.

BettyBardMacDonald · 02/12/2024 08:39

Nepotism?? Ever heard of Jared & Ivanka, Lara Trump, the trump sons?

Well given that you're empathising with powerful men abusing their position, I thought I'd join in.

That is after all perfectly normal to just do what everyone else is doing, according to you.

And this might surprise you but some parents actually report their children for criminal behaviour.

Goodness, you sound rather upset.

Well given that you're empathising with powerful men abusing their position, I thought I'd join in.

You’re drawing a false analogy. As I said, apples and oranges…

TankFlyBossW4lk · 02/12/2024 08:44

@TheTidyBear
Nepotism? Are you saying this in all seriousness? Trump and his daughter and her husband have left the US looking like a laughing stock. I'm not even going into the countless illegal personal profiteering by him and his family.

I completely understand why Biden is pardoning his son.

To be honest, this is what you get when you promote a lawless leader. And I mean Trump. The rules have changed. Anything goes. There's going to be a criminal as the US head of state.

Butchyrestingface · 02/12/2024 08:44

The current president just pardoned a criminal because he's his son, how much worse can it get than that? 😂

Electing a rapist and convicted felon. Although doubtless those convictions will “go away” once he’s in office.

Said rapist and convicted felon then pardoning and releasing numerous homicidal “hostages” who stormed Capitol Hill 4 years ago. He won’t even be able to claim he’s blinded by fatherly love, just doin’ it for the LOLZ and to stick it to the opposition.

What Joe is doing is bad but I’d say the above is worse.

After all the Democrat party put Biden through in the last few months, he probably feels like, fuck it, why should I care

What did they put Biden through?

A threat to democracy! Don't worry about it, Trump has assured his voters they won't have to vote again - so that's goodbye democracy.

Of course you understand, you're blinded to a point where you actually think right wing shills pop up on UK forums when there's no elections for the next 5 years.

Tbh I don’t blame him. Biden knows full well that Trump is going to wreak havoc and fill every position of power with his acolytes. I’d hate to have a child in prison who would be at the mercy of the vengeful orange one. Trump has pardoned all sorts of criminals; at this point there really is no point in playing the nice guy and turning the other cheek.

This.

AdventCarols · 02/12/2024 08:51

Whatever else Trump is, he is the democratically elected President. Voters decided he was better than the alternative. Which says quite a lot about the alternative.

I think it says a lot about the values, moral compass, priorities, and IQ level of the people voting. Wasn't the top search after the election something like "was Biden not running for president?"

I’d say it says more about the voters, being that the alternative wasn’t a convicted felon or rapist.
