Biden has pardoned his son because his conviction was a "miscarriage of justice".

Is this the total end of standards and even a pretence at integrity in public life? This is a president, who admittedly like all the others, allowed innocent people to be executed in their joke of a justice system. What a hypocrite.

And yet he waited until he lost the election to issue the pardon. I wonder why? Imagine the difference in coverage from the likes of the BBC if this was Trump…

Tbh I would have done the same. Biden is old and may not be around for much longer. I would like to die surrounded by my family, not with one offspring in prison.

So that makes it ok?

Onand · 02/12/2024 08:04

Wait until Trump starts pardoning….they won’t be able to keep up.

America may be seen as a great leader of the free world but their politics and ‘ways’ leave a lot to be desired.

He’s a very old man who wants to do the last thing he actively can to help his son. In a few weeks he’ll have no chance to. Most of us would do the same. I’m not a fan of Biden but come on, it’s what any sane person would do to help their family - in a system where the actual president is a sex offender and fraudster and the government made of billionaires and fascists. The US is a cautionary tale nothing more.

No. I would absolutely NOT do the same.

Lovelysummerdays · 02/12/2024 08:05

Cantalever · 02/12/2024 03:32

But this is his own son. Biden previously claimed he would not intervene in the juystice system on his son's behalf, or grant him clemency, bht has just gone back on all that. its like the last gasp of a feeble ruler who has lost all sense of wider issues.

I think we have all made questionable decisions regarding our own children. I’d struggle to judge someone for wanting to help their child tbh.

The UK and the US have very different political systems and cultures. Lots to criticise here, but nowhere near the same.

If you say so, I’d say there is a lot to criticise here. And I lived in America for many years. There’s lots of good about the US, but over here, only the bad is reported it seems. When I lived in America, if I’d have listened to news reports, I’d have believed that UK politics was more corrupt. People here definitely seem more dissatisfied.

What kind of parent given the legal power to pardon wouldn’t pardon their own child?

I don't know, maybe one who thought setting a good example not to abuse your position as the most powerful man on the planet was somewhat important?

What man wouldn't promote his friend from his old boy network over someone else if he has the opportunity? Don't complain about it if you think Biden using his position for his own personal interests are ok, because you've normalised using your position in that way.

OvaHere · 02/12/2024 08:07

NetZeroZealot · 02/12/2024 07:54

I can understand why he’s done it but I wish he hadn’t. He’s just ceded the moral high ground to Trump.

I don't think there's ever been a moral high ground on either side. Perhaps more people will realise that now. Ditto for the UK.

BiggestFan · 02/12/2024 08:10

TheTidyBear · 02/12/2024 08:01

The same female posters who are defending the most powerful man in the World using his position for his own personal gain?

Hope nobody complains when they don't get a promotion because their boss was just doing what was normal by promoting someone they had a personal interest in. That would be other men mostly.

People like to have a goodie and a baddie as a pp said, so whoever is worse is the baddie, and on here that’s Trump, and therefore Biden is automatically hailed as the goodie. It’s a strange way to think, but it’s common.

Moreovers · 02/12/2024 08:13

Codlingmoths · 02/12/2024 04:30

I reckon this. Biden has looked around and thought what is the point of taking the moral high ground and sacrificing my own family to this fucked up system.

Yep.

The most powerful men on the planet rarely set a good example. The more powerful, the worse the behaviour. It’s silly to think or hope they might want to set an example, it’s not often in the nature of humans who get power. I’d be more shocked if they were principled.

I'm not going to pardon my son is a lie

Hope that's clear

....but it wasn't a lie when he said it - is that clear! I'm done with this one.

It was because he's now pardoned his son. This isn't hard to grasp.

Eyresandgraces · 02/12/2024 08:15

Why are people worked up about this?
Morally it’s questionable, however the last 7 years of presidency have been as bizarre as the UK under the Tories especially Johnson.
Thatcher said there was no such thing as society in 1987.
She led the way in everyone for themselves being the normal.

Next time you’re all shopping in Tesco read about Dame Shirley Porter.

ManhattanPopcorn · 02/12/2024 08:16

Why leave his only remaining son in jail on principle when no one cares about principles anymore?

TheScoop · 02/12/2024 08:16

You pardon a burp, not your pals and relatives.

Having said that, our equivalent is hanging out lordships. It is archaic and needs to stop.

Ytcsghisn · 02/12/2024 08:17

The intellectual contortionism on this thread by the Trump haters is hilarious. The fact that hate for a person can blind you so much that you come up with such nonsense excuses and reasons for this joke of a senile, corrupt president.

They just can’t bring themselves to to call Biden out.

The angst on display is so funny.

In which case lots of things are silly, like hoping men might not be violent, or hoping that your husband doesn't cheat on you.

If it's just human nature you may as well screw everyone over. Which again begs the question why do people who think like this have any issue with Trump?

Naunet · 02/12/2024 08:18

It's absolutely disgusting, but as you can see from the comments, American politics is so fanatical people will just say "but Trump..." and think that makes it all OK.

Blueblell · 02/12/2024 08:19

He had no choice - what do you think would happen to him during the Trump admin

Some really crazy stuff on this thread, it's like they can't face the fact they've been fooled by the nice old grandpa act.

They didn’t though, they voted for economic policies that they feel are better and against wokeness. Nothing much will change in terms of ethics and law once his term starts.

We can agree to disagree on the better economic policies because that’s entirely subjective, but surely you can see that in voting for their preferred economic policies they’ve also voted against any form of morality or rule of law. Again, he’s a convicted felon and a proven rapist.

As for your last sentence, I think saying nothing will change in terms of ethics is absolutely laughable - he’s already refused to sign the ethics pledge (which I suppose in a way shows some honesty about where he stands re ethics in public office).

BettyBardMacDonald · 02/12/2024 08:23

"They didn’t though, they voted for economic policies that they feel are better and against wokeness. Nothing much will change in terms of ethics and law once his term starts."

Lol. Wait until trump's tariffs kick in. Mexico and Canada already have told him to fuck off. His ignorant voters ain't seen nothing yet when it comes to economic pain.

The American economy has been excellent under Biden by most measures. Now trump will destroy it again. What fools Americans are.

Yeah no-one cares about principles. Lets all just screw each other over then.

Cheers Joe.

deeahgwitch · 02/12/2024 08:25

I'm so disappointed in Joe Biden.
