Help! Locked inside

lolapenguin · 02/12/2024 01:10

Posting on here because it’s urgent.

its currently 1am, im locked inside an airbnb in a foreign country, and my door handle came off, could use some help and advice. Tried watching videos to no avail, left a message for the airbnb guy, don’t think he speaks English if I called (airbnb translates our messages), trying to call air BnB. If anyone’s awake I could use some help

Sometimes people have solutions - worth a go. Only takes a couple of minutes to post

It also only takes a couple of minutes to phone for help.

Yea- but you don't necessarily want emergency services to be your first point of call

Don't you?

You're a little ray of sunshine!
I expect she was panicking. Being in a foreign country and all.

No need for personal attacks.

Do you not have a toilet in the air bnb?

Presumably somewhere the other side of the door she’s stuck behind?

Kool4katz · 02/12/2024 08:47

@Nolegusta Surely as a normal person, you’d try to solve the problem yourself before potentially wasting Emergency Services valuable time? OP tried to find other solutions first which was entirely sensible. She wasn’t in immediate danger, after all?

Ever heard of different countries being in different timezones?

No I didn’t know that was a thing!?

Surely as 'a normal person' you understand we're not all the same.

The firemen came and pushed the handle from the outside, I couldn’t have done anything from inside the room unfortunately, didn’t have the facilities for that! But I’m freed now, thank you all for helping;

I was going to wait it out for the morning but thank you for suggesting to call the fire department!

You were more useful than Reddit

What did Reddit suggest, some weird obscure solution involving tweezers and an onion?

Yalta · 02/12/2024 09:10

Nolegusta · 02/12/2024 08:07

It also only takes a couple of minutes to phone for help.

But who do you call for help?

The suggestion of the fire brigade is something I wouldn’t have thought of in the moment

Yalta · 02/12/2024 09:10

I’m also wondering what Reddit suggestions were

She isn’t in the UK. The time on her phone will be the time of the country she is in, not the time in the UK. The country she is in is probably an hour or 2 hours ahead.

You call emergency services and they will send whatever service is appropriate. Bit difficult.

LookItsMeAgain · 02/12/2024 09:26

Was the main door to the Air BnB unlocked to allow the emergency services in or did they have to break down that door to get to you @lolapenguin ?

I'm genuinely interested in the chain of events here and what the Air BnB host will do next? I'd expect a significant discount on my stay because the house/apartment was unsafe - you should always be able to make an exit if you need to.

lolapenguin · 02/12/2024 09:47

Hi thank you all for your response!
I was trapped inside a room so I had no way to get out to open the front door, or access the toilet :( I don’t know how the fire brigade got inside, they obviously have some technique.
Luckily In most European countries they understand English so I was able to communicate with the fire department. Initially I did call the police, they said they couldn’t do anything about it.

I posted on Reddit mechanics (my fault) they were mean about it, saying it was stupid posting on a mechanic community etc etc.

anyways, I appreciate all of the comments! Will never close an airbnb door again

I just needed to pee, I wasn’t in danger so I called Airbnb and the host first and when they were no help, I called the fire people

Airbnb includes self contained flats (in blocks), complete houses for your sole use, and rooms in someone's house (where they are also living there.)

What type of place were you in?
It sounds as if you were in a bedroom in someone's house.
If that's the case, your host would either help out or sort out help for you.

Well done OP.

I think you did it in the right order and I'm glad that you're out safely Flowers

Edited

It doesn't take much reading to work out that there wasn't a host in the vicinity.
