I know some people pronounce the 'l' in Almond, but I don't think it can be many. I've never heard it except from my husband and it drives me nuts (!)

So how many do?

YABU: One should pronounce the 'l' in Almond.

YANBU: Of course you bloody don't!

My inlaws pronounce Hannah to rhyme with spanner, which is.... interesting.

I knew a woman whose parents named her Linder. I initially assumed it was a German name, but no, they were just unable to spell Linda.

But I'm confused about Hannah and Spanner, are they English and don't pronounce the R in Spanner or are they Scottish and saying Hanner with a rolled r.

I have never (in 50 years) heard it pronounced without the L. Have lived in Midlands/ various Northern towns and cities for almost (which is also pronounced with an L!) all of that time. I genuinely had no idea what some people didn't pronounce the L.
However, unlike some other folk, I don't made judgy comments on other people's pronunciations/regional differences. Because I recognise we all have different accents and dialects and they are all wonderful.

Interesting! I’m from the East Mids and have lived in Yorkshire and London. I don’t recall anyone I know pronouncing the L in almond until I met my husband. I think it sounds really odd because I’m used to aah-mund.

I used to think he was saying it incorrectly because his parents moved to the UK in their 30s and he’s inherited quite a few rogue pronunciations. Am aware that this one is legit though!

Annabella92 · 30/11/2024 22:01

I've heard it pronounced with a l, maybe on TV, maybe IRL I'm not sure but I've definitely heard it. I'm Scottish so it's an aaaah-mond

I never got that memo. Why does it have a stupid-arse L in the middle of it then making us all look stupid? Or should that be ‘making us ‘au’ look stupid?’.

Are we French? No. Are we Lady Chatterley’s lover. No.

The L is pronounced and that’s it! 😠

do you say SALmon too??!

SuperfluousHen · 30/11/2024 18:01

The letter K is often silent in English.
Not so the letter L

Here I stand. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Salmon

SnaccidentsHappen · 30/11/2024 22:20

I say Almond with the L.

The L isn't silent but both pronunciations are correct so, almond & ammund.

Jostuki · 30/11/2024 20:11

It's pronounced Almond as in Marc Almond.

Ask Alexa to play Marc Almond and she repeats his name back without the l sound!

They are English and say Hanner.

Ahmund or Armund depending on where I've lived in England.

This is off the point, but Armund sounds like a lovely name for a boy.

If I have another child, they may well be called Armund.

I remember Chris Tarrant pronouncing it as all-mond on Millionaire and I thought I'd never heard anything so weird in my life. It's like people who say pollis for police, thee-atr for theatre and sing-ging for singing.

This I don’t get. When I was about 19 I had a boyfriend who lost his mind when I pronounced ‘castle’ with a short ‘a’ (like at least 50% of the UK population) and said he’d ‘never heard anyone say it like this.’ 🙄🙄Never heard it. Like, where have people been that they don’t understand that there are different regional pronunciations?! Why were you soooo weirded out by a completely run-of-the-mill Midlands pronunciation?!

StMarie4me · 30/11/2024 23:19

I say ol-mund

Not sure why people are so surprised by the 'ah-mond' pronunciation. How do you pronounce 'calm', 'alms' 'balm' 'palm' 'qualm' and 'psalm'?

Actually I think people do add a slight nod to the L in those words. Certainly in alms. It’s not the same as arms, is it? Or even ahms (ahms and alms would be the same for me because I’m ’non-rhotic’). There’s a gentle hint of ‘L’ in there somewhere.

I once made a cake for a kid called Armand. And someone said it was the most lovely boys name they’d ever seen. I do see it - soft but strong. I assume with Armand the second syllable is stressed though!

Notmoog · 30/11/2024 19:00

How's that meant to be pronounced then?

LIE-luk apparently. I say lie-lack.

Starling7 · 30/11/2024 23:35

I blame Noel Fielding

Olmond

CaptainMyCaptain · 01/12/2024 08:55

I've just realised that although I call the nut an ahmund I would say Marc Olmund.

MarvellousMonsters · 01/12/2024 17:57

dementedpixie · 30/11/2024 16:44

I say it more like ah-mond so don't sound the 'l' at all.

The L is silent.

Almond

Google British pronunciation has alms as Aamz. I guess for some the L isn’t silent.

Single50something · 01/12/2024 18:35

I say all mund.

restingbitchface30 · 01/12/2024 18:58

What do you mean! I’ve never heard someone say ah-mond! It’s an al-mund. To not pronounce the l is insane to me!

Lots of people do it all the same 😉

Correct pronunciation is ar-monds.
Exactly like salmon, silent L. Basic literacy
