To think The Beautiful South...

were...bloody amazing!?

AIBU to think this band might be the most underrated band in the UK...EVER!?

I have just blasted out their greatest hits whilst wrapping presents and had a nostalgic sing-along. So many wonderfully written songs, great singers too. Criminally underrated in my opinion.

AIBU?

I'd be interested to know if there's much of a north/South divide in whether people like them or not.

Scottish and I hate them. As far as other bands mentioned - Deacon Blue are OK, Texas just meh.

Cringe a better word than twee. Self-righteous. Thinking they are oh so clever and making cutting social commentary through the medium of a plinky pop song.

Yuk.

Raspberrymoon49 · 28/11/2024 17:13

Can’t bear them and Heaton has huge ego

StaunchMomma · 28/11/2024 17:13

Absolutely hate them, especially Perfect 10 & A little Time. Shudder.

Oh God, that Rotterdam one as well! Awful!!

Instant radio channel change.

It's painfully cheesy easy-listening, for me.

Horses for courses though, OP. We can't all like the same things.

I very much doubt you like Drum & Bass so you wouldn't enjoy my car, either 😂

ClippyMuldoon · 28/11/2024 17:18

I hate them with a scary passion. They are twee, not the lyrics but their singing style and general annoyingness. Yeah yeah call it ironic and knowing and that I just don't understaaaand but just reading those lyrics above have made me want to break something. They are a turn-the-radio-off band.

Also now I have Perfect Ten in my head so am cursing you all. And myself for reading this 😁

I dumped my boyfriend (partly) because he loved the Housemartins!

Ha ha we could have all just swopped!😆

ClippyMuldoon · 28/11/2024 17:19

Also my name is one of those in that names song. Fun times when that came out. Bah.

The thread is getting stupid now- anyone who thinks their songs are twee either doesn't know what twee means, or has never really listened to the songs.

They are NOT twee, twee means cute, sentimental, quaint etc. What is exactly is twee about them?

I know! They must never have listened to the lyrics, they are so cleverly written

Old Red Eyes is one of my favourites. Also A Little Time, Song For Whoever and Prettiest Eyes....Okay, I think I'm going to end up having a wee sing song tonight!

(Saw Paul Heaton with Rianne Downey and they were brilliant!)

duckduckgooseduckagain · 28/11/2024 16:56

My fave band from the time were Prefab Sprout. Loved them.

Still love them. Paddy has the best voice.

GettingStuffed · 28/11/2024 17:24

They mark an infuriating time I my life. I had a young baby and the students next door would play them ad infinitum and my baby was a bad sleeper

Kool4katz · 28/11/2024 17:24

Urgh! Absolute shite music. Am northern.

Lleys · 28/11/2024 17:26

North, LOVE them. Have seen Paul Heaton many times. Think my fave is the lessor well known Let Love Speak up Itself

FussyPud · 28/11/2024 17:26

I have always liked Paul’s voice, but prefer Jacqui to the new female vocalist. Rhianne?

Have seen him/them three times. Once with Jacqui, once solo, and once with the new singer. All excellent gigs. Caravan of Love sung by an entire crowd is always a solid end to the evening. (Yes, I know it’s a cover)

FatOaf · 28/11/2024 17:34

I liked a few of their songs, mainly Old Red Eyes is Back, Rotterdam and Don't Marry Her. But I absolutely loathed Song for Whoever, which is horribly twee, and I found some others a bit copycat, e.g. the poor imitation of Tom Waits in Liars' Bar.

Piggywaspushed · 28/11/2024 16:35

One thing about them is you can always hear the lyrics. Maybe the objections are based on that kind of lyric led music? DH always says he doesn't care about lyrics (but likes lyricy bands!)

I love Deacon Blue too. I only recently learnt they were 'sipping on raki'. I thought it was 'slipping down rapids'. It being a ship and all.

This is an excellent point.
I'm definitely a lyrics fan. One reason why I love earlier Radiohead and Roger Waters, for example.

the80sweregreat · 28/11/2024 17:44

I like Deacon blue too
People diss the 80s / 90s music , but some good bands around back then

CeeJay81 · 28/11/2024 17:44

I also like them. Had their carry on up the charts album back in the day.

The music is twee, though.

I find their sound just so annoying and 'nice', even if they tried to be edgy with lyrics.

Wrapping presents? Do you have a lot of birthdays coming up OP? 😉

Yes and,

I think it's either not knowing what twee refers to or, more likely, they're taking the lyrics at face value.
In fact, there's a comment I just read that has convinced me it is the latter (I won't say which one)....

MorrisZapp · 28/11/2024 17:52

Does he not sing some pish about loving the wrinkles on a woman's face? Insufferable.

Shadyshady · 28/11/2024 17:53

I thought that was going to end...are shite!

One of a cluster of beige bands that surfaced in the 80's and drove me mad.

Dreary and overrated at the time. Pointless now!

Edited

Gosh, Song For Whoever is anything but twee

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 28/11/2024 16:18

Annoying and twee, I agree.

Twee? 🙄
have you listened to the lyrics of these songs? Nothing fucking twee about ……bet you’ve never even seen Paul Heaton …..just someone else who has come on the thread to spout shite and make a tit of themselves🤣🤣🤣
