To be shocked at the net migration figures currently being discussed

Feelingathomenow · 28/11/2024 11:06

Yesterday’s figures discussed by the Tories stated that since 2010 the net migration figures to the UK has equalled the size of the population of Wales. Today we were told the figures to June 2023 showed a net migration figure of nearly 1 million for that year, for the year to June 2024 this had reduced to a mere 3/4 of a million. The numbers coming in of the boats per year alone is equal to a large town. AIBU to think this has to stop. We need to immediately crack down on people allowed into this country- limit it to urgently needed highly skilled jobs and start offshore processing (or similar) of the people who are here illegally (basically like many other countries).

We just can’t cope with those numbers. - no wonder our infrastructure is collapsing, we have a housing crisis etc.

I want to hear from the government how they are going to tackle it. We have heard from the Tories now it is over to Starmer.

Exactly. Hence looking at NET migration

Corricdo · 28/11/2024 18:09

People always seem to ignore the cultural and societal effects as well.

I paid NHS surcharge when I came to the country and on my visa 'no resource to public funds' was stated but I was allowed to use NHS. Your husband can use NHS services.

UK unfortunately don't have any natural resources like Norway, nor it has landmass of USA, so it is understandable why British people are worried. Government needs to come up with a plan to come to an optimal number of immigrants. Even from immigrants' point of view, it is not possible to sustain good quality of living with these numbers.

Not here he can”t - it’s absolutely impossible to get an appointment at our GP surgery!

There is too much legal immigration. However, we’re caught between a rock and a hard place - we need people to come to do jobs and stimulate the economy. It’s going to take decades to get training up to a level where we don’t need people to fill skills shortages.

The immigration and asylum system is a total mess. No one seems to have a clue about the kind of system we need or want. Politicians terrified of not sounding tough enough, or sounding too tough.

The whole debate seems to be dominated by two extreme views - those on the right, who think all immigration is bad, stop it immediately, etc. and those more on the left who see all immigration as unrelentingly positive. The reality lies between the two, but barely gets a look in, and no debate happens because everyone is terrified of looking racist or xenophobic.

It’s all extremely depressing.

But people consistently vote for less immigration. The Tories got in in 2010, 2015, 2017 and 2019 promising to heavily reduce immigration. Eventually hounded out of office with immigration numbers at record levels (and the economy a bigger shitshow than ever). Also the Brexit vote in 2016.

The Tories had a mandate for 14 years to reduce immigration and just kept increasing it exponentially. Reform will end up forming the next parliament.

You do realise that people actually leave the country too.

Exactly. Hence NET migration figures being discussed

Haven’t RTFT so this may well have already been covered, but just in case:

Yesterday’s figures discussed by the Tories stated that since 2010 the net migration figures to the UK has equalled the size of the population of Wales. We just can’t cope with those numbers. - no wonder our infrastructure is collapsing, we have a housing crisis etc.

All of the above happened under the Tory governments that have been in charge since 2010.

I want to hear from the government how they are going to tackle it. We have heard from the Tories now it is over to Starmer.

Shame the Tories didn’t sort it out in their fourteen years, but maybe you could give Labour a bit more than five months, eh?

Makes no sense. If the thread is full of racist remarks, just copy and paste them here? I must have missed them.

You did not. I replied to you explaining your racism, you replied to me ignoring your racism.

It seems we are supposed to allow people to be racist because migration is being discussed in the news. Ignoring MN who are black and brown, they do not matter. They are supposed to just put up with the racism/

I know women who have deactivated their account because they could no longer support MN, a social media platform that allows so much racism. I should probably follow suit.

The new arrivals are moving into the properties* vacated by the net decline in the UK population - i.e. people who have died or who themselves moved away from the UK.

*Clearly they are not literally moving into these houses, but the 745,000 people who arrived in the UK in 2022 replaced the 518,000 who left the UK (either by death or emigration) so the net population increase was only 227,000.

Ah so there’s not a shortage of housing - I see!!!!

This again?

The UK was founded on migration. We need immigrants.

Yes but high quality immigrants. I'm an immigrant myself and I think UK takes too many riff raffs from cultures that are not all compatible with British culture.

quantumbutterfly · 28/11/2024 18:14

Wordsofprey · 28/11/2024 17:50

This is such a backwards loop-de-loop self fulfilling perspective to have.

Wages are able to stay low BECAUSE of mass immigration from low wage countries.

Asking a likely middle class mother whether anybody in their immediate circle would pick fruit for a living makes no point whatsoever. Do you not think we have people in this country who work low skilled jobs?

So we can never stop people coming over - so we need to have unfettered and unlimited mass migration akin to the size of Wales over multiple years? No, we don't.

Australia was "built on immigration" yet they have some of the most stringent migration rules in the world.

It's peculiar how only the West are expected to let down the drawbridge and relieve the guards of duty and let anybody and everybody come into their countries while many of them, ESPECIALLY the UK, is completely on their arse in terms of public services, quality of life in comparison to previous years, and financial stability.

We need to encourage millions of people to come here and wait years on the public purse for their asylum claims to go through to placate the aging population? Good idea!! Sorry, but really?

What we actually need is a complete rethink on just how we've ended up in a position where our young feel they can't buy a home, they can't have children, because they can't afford it. How are we in a position that apparently only foreigners are willing to do certain jobs because they are so low paid you can barely get by on it in this country? Why has the gap between house prices and wages grown so, so much? Why have wages stagnated to the point that skilled workers are on a couple grand more than those on minimum wage or benefits?

I personally find it......peculiar, how there seems to be a perfect storm happening where the only solution being floated about in the mainstream is "more immigrants".

yep ( I like your username btw)

dp used to do seasonal harvesting work for local farmers for extra cash when he was young & fit , it was a very common thing (it's historically why youngster have 6 weeks off education in the summer).

I'm sure there are plenty of strapping lads in our prison systems that could be put to good use for a bit of pay, get them out in the fresh air, very good for their mental health (Kier Starmer says hard work is good for you - might help them see the error of their ways).

Shakeoffyourchains · 28/11/2024 13:03

They're not illegal migrants then, are they?

The vast majority of illegal migrants are visa overstayers.

Yes, they are. They haven't applied via a legal route and have turned up on our shores uninvited without status to be here (often without documentation). They shouldn't be here.

I’ve not once mentioned anyone ‘black or brown’, nor have I said anything racist. If you truly feel that way maybe an open forum where people are allowed to have adult discussions isn’t for you. I hope you find something more suited to you, perhaps an echo chamber?

On the back of all this Reform will be the next government…people are sick fed up the numbers are staggering and not sustainable…

@reesewithoutaspoon

"I wish governments would just admit they need migrants and stop pretending they want to reduce it. We have an increasingly elderly population and less taxpayers of working age.
Either we allow working age migrants, to increase the tax take to pay for the increasing elderly population or we increase the tax burden on the current tax payers, which is never a vote winner."

Or alternatively get the existing 9 million economically inactive 16 to 64 back into work rather writing them off as lazy or unemployable .

This would require higher wages to motivate them to move from benefits to wages. But moving them back into work higher wages would equate to a higher income tax revenue and lower state spending on benefits.

Or alternatively we import cheap migrant labour to make sure the large companies can keep making billions and the Government doesn't have to pay nurses a decent salary.

They aren’t illegal if they claim asylum at that point. Once they have done that they are legal.

Honestly ask a Tory MP what the law actually is and watch them squirm. It’s quite funny.

Don't waste your breath on posters who appear/name change on divisive threads. At best, they clearly don't have the courage of their convictions, at worst they're here to stir and be hateful. There's literally no point.

Gingerlingerlonger · 28/11/2024 18:19

I have no problem with migrants who come here to work, build a new life and such. What I object to is importing criminals and benefit fraudsters etc. There is a difference between someone here with good intentions and someone here to cause direct harm. We need to stop pretending bad actors do not exist because it's fuelling anti immigration sentiment and racism. I don't give a toss what colour their skin is nor who they prey to. I do care if they come here thinking the people who already live here owe them a shag on demand and free money.

My OH goes to work every day and works with a group so diverse you would think it was a Beneton poster. Right from the top of the organisation to the shopfloor. No problems. There's even a multi-faith prayer room for the observant. All just people trying to earn a living. On a night they all have to drive through an area with one of the hotels that make the news, due to it's closeness to the business. The police are often there and everyone locks their doors. That includes the migrants who he works with. In fact, they are the ones warning to lock the car doors and roll the windows up. I don't think all the hotel occupants are bad people but there are definitely some.

I think maybe there needs to be some more thorough background checks.

quantumbutterfly · 28/11/2024 18:19

Getonwitit · 28/11/2024 17:54

You are right but we do not need 1 million of them a year. Fast forward 30 years and these migrants will be aging too. We cannot feed and house the world.

It's called 'kicking the football down the road' AKA someone else's problem (our childrens').

Edited

You need people who will work hard and have skills to offer (regardless of where they're from). We had the Hong Kong scheme for example with the hope of attracting a lot of hard working/skilled workers.

We've allowed ourselves to be a dumping ground for a lot of undesirables, who frankly have nothing positive to offer. If a million high skilled people were coming here every year then the economy wouldn't be in the mess it's in, but too many are unskilled and don't even speak English or even want to work/pay taxes.

If I was a mother in Syria with teenage boys and I could get them across to Europe I would. Saying they should stay as they are of "fighting age" is absurd

Would you have taken your teenage boys out of England during WW2? What would have happened if everyone had done that?

Actually a lot of it will require better employers and better rights and working conditions for employees. With more requirements for employers to make adjustments and fewer work arounds to stop them trying to not employ those with disabilities and long term health conditions.

For sake of clarity we should absolutely not allow people to post racist comment.

Could you please provide examples on this thread that you personally deem racist?

JudgeJenny · 28/11/2024 18:23

It really isn’t. 97% of the figures announced today came to the country legally. Most come to jobs or to study. Foreign students prop up our universities as they pay vastly more than our own students.
