arghhhhhhh

everyday this I speak to this man (in fact he is the husband of a good friend but also ).

he is a nice enough chap (ooh, get me sounding all posh), and at the moment is being fab as I have no car and he is helping with my school runs, so I cannot complain toooooo much, (or can I).

welllllllllllllll........

he talks to me, talks to DS2, speaks ABOUT DS2, says his name, and then laughs, all because he reckons he has a problem with speaking......well.....his problem isn;t any other words except JACOB, which for some reason he says as JACUM.....arghhh.

he is told by my son, and by me, repeatedly, that it is JACOB, he says sorry, and then says it sloooooowly, saying it with the B really obviously, and then in the next breath he gets it wrong AGAIN...

even my son, with his hands on his hips, tells him that he is wrong and that his name is Jacob, and no-one else gets it wrong (well, friends kiddies do but that is normal.....most of 'em can;t even say their own name's properly), but A GROWN MAN??????? >

lol....you can't spell it either (or presumably you are spelling it how you say it).

hmmmmm....I can't say 'submarine' either....I always say 'sumbmarine.

tis cos it is my sons' name tho that I get all het up.....oh....and the PMT!!!

My dh use to call our nephew Jacup. It annoyed me intensely. Then one day for no reason he started to pronounce it correctly.

HappyNewYearFeet06 · 29/04/2008 11:24

Lol, my dh used to call my nephew Decland instead of Declan. I don't know whether the 'd' on the end was more pronounced cos it annoyed me so much.

Dh genuinely thought it was pronounced like that but I corrected him straight away but he never learnt.

Its the same with cutlery, he pronounces cuttalry.

Our local newspaper is the courier (as in a person that delivers parcels) yet hubby pronounces it currier, it would smell if it was currier, pmsl!!

One final one is Renault, he says the T on the end instead of it being silent like it should be.

Lol, I just find it funny when he mis pronounces things but if it was a name it would sooo annoy me.

Psychomum5 · 29/04/2008 11:36

seems I am not the only one with a DH who cannot say Jacob then....my friend will be thankful (altho she doesn;t know about MN or that I am ranting about her DH...).

awwww...re your DH happynewyear.....altho you may wish to slap him a lot I reckon!

HappyNewYearFeet06 · 29/04/2008 11:38

ooooh so much its unbelievable, lol! There are so many mispronounced words its unbelievable but those are the funniest. Others just get ignored.

Freckle · 29/04/2008 11:41

I have a Jacob and you would (or perhaps you wouldn't ) be surprised at how many people pronounce it Jacum. My nephew used to do it - and indeed still does if he's not thinking properly. I have had adults pronounce it this way too. Not sure what it is about the name - as you say it is not unusual or difficult.

theBOD · 29/04/2008 11:47

if it bothers you that much why not just walk instead of taking lifts off him to save you and your son the trauma of having his name pronounced wrong.
i mean he is being completely unreasonable.

Psychomum5 · 29/04/2008 11:53

lol theBOD.....

nah at walking.....school is a hike away and tis 4mile walk there and back, and I am still having physio from my car accident last october so would cause problems there....altho tis my aim to manage it by the end of this term (I used to walk).

when I do drive I park down the hill and walk up to get me and them used to it (it is at the top of a mahhoooosive hill too!!!).

nah......sticking with me NBU thanks!

My dad, God rest his soul, for some unknown reason could never pronounce my nephew's name, Matthew. It always came out "Malcolm" . My sis was always so p'd off about it, but it always made me PMSL...

theBOD · 29/04/2008 12:02

i'd imagine it's very annoying much like when i hear people pronounce "specific" as "pacific" but i doubt being corrected every 2 minutes is fun for him either.
just grin and bear it, if he hasn't learned already he probably never will.

nametaken · 29/04/2008 12:12

Get your own back by mispronouncing his name and repeatedly dropping it into the conversation.

Psychomum5 · 29/04/2008 15:06

he is going to be dropping them soon.....will smile sweetly me thinks.

he has a name ending in B tho.....wonder how he will take it if I slip up and end it in M insted.

ahhhh....he'll just reckon I am the one with the odd speach then and think it makes it even more okay to do!!!

ho hum....

OP - This rang a bell with me because my ds is also called Jacob, and next door's 4yo calls him Jacum... but now ds insists on being called Jake, so no prob.

One thing that did really annoy me was that my best friend from school always put Jakob on her Christmas cards. WTF? I send her one every year with, obviously, the right spelling, so why stick in a k? Last year was the first time she got it right (after 14 years!)
