To think that people with extreme political views shouldn’t be allowed to vote?

Far-left and far-right ideologies are tearing society apart. Should we limit the influence of extremists?

Its people who believe every word in the Daily Mail should never vote again. Also read somewhere about ten years ago, they were proposing an upper age limit for vote, inline with jury service.

If was applied in 2016, we would still be in the EU. As this graph shows. https://www.statista.com/statistics/520954/brexit-votes-by-age/ But I did find another one a couple of years ago where 80+ was 70:30 in favour of Brexit.

That is absolutely disgusting ageism. And social engineering

People here asking me to define what I mean as if we don’t know what “extremist” means. I have also alluded to far-left and far-right.

Only one person so far has commented with a bit of sense and a somewhat normal comment instead of asking stupidness like “define extreme” and “are you saying people who disagree with us shouldn’t vote”. Come off it.

We do know what extremist means.

One major indicator is the desire to find a way to stop people voiting.

Or we could just get rid of any political party we don’t like, like Hitler did. Just eliminate all except one.

he did it democratically

In the sense that he was voted in democratically, outlawed the main opposition, and then passed a law disbanding and preventing the formation of any other party

Which brings us back to the main problem - the voters 😂

And Robert Lindsay, Power to the People!

If, in removing my right to vote, my obligation regarding paying tax etc is also removed, then I'll think about it!

DdraigGoch · 26/11/2024 13:08

I'm pretty sure that "people I don't like should be stripped of a human right (voting)" is in itself an extreme view. Better deregister yourself OP.

The communist party regularly stand a candidate in our (staunchly labour) area for anyone who thinks the labour party are too right-wing. They generally lose their deposit.

KimDarlingWeAreTheJongUns · 26/11/2024 13:29

Swimming against the tide here, but I run a small country in Asia and, in my opinion, this really is the only way.

In fact, this is what we already do. I am a true lover of democracy, but, as with so many things, there are limits. I, and my policies, are the only sensible, reasonable, measured ones that anybody could possibly agree with - thus we can know that anybody who wouldn't want to vote for me would defo be a dangerous extremist; that's why I ban any opposition from standing.

100% with you there, OP - let's smash those wicked dissidents who want to pervert the very nature of acceptable democratic politics.

Funny enough, your post shows you have an extreme political view.

User37482 · 26/11/2024 13:33

My thinking that being a woman in a biological material reality not a feeling seems to make people think I’m a right wing nutcase. I don’t trust anyone to decide whats an appropriate opinion for a voter.

Notyouthful · 26/11/2024 13:55

Also ban people who always vote for X party as their late husband/parents voted for them.

Who is going to be affected by the results? You and not your late loved ones.

labamba007 · 26/11/2024 16:40

The irony of this is it's such an extremist view.

Hateam · 26/11/2024 17:08

JudgeJ · 26/11/2024 13:05

I loved Citizen Smith!

SquawkerTexasRanger · 26/11/2024 17:12

Of course not you big ejeet, you can’t just decide you don’t like someone else’s views so you’re going to take away their right to vote 🙄

Err yeah ok.

YearningForAWinteryWinter · 27/11/2024 08:13

This is ridiculous. May as well have a dictatorship and not let anyone vote.
I believe that we need extremes in politics to help us find the middle ground.

RuminationStation · 27/11/2024 08:17

We need to shift how we use social media. That’s where extreme views are boiling. It should be a tool that we use but it’s become a way of manipulating populations and creating division and extremes. We are being manipulated by foreign interests that want us to be pitched against each other.

I don’t know what the answer is. It’s not curtailing democracy - but we do need to address this awful polarised, angry and divisive discourse.

There is more that unites us than divides us and now, more than ever, we need to be a United Kingdom and come together against the actual and real threats against us. Not turn on each other. We can have different views and debate these without it becoming extreme and vitriolic.

We have to listen to each other. Not trust what we see on SM without some significant critical thinking.
