To think that people with extreme political views shouldn’t be allowed to vote?

Far-left and far-right ideologies are tearing society apart. Should we limit the influence of extremists?

I genuinely don’t know what ‘extremist’ means in the context you’re discussing. To my mind, voting for reform, denying climate change, being in favour of the death penalty and being anti-abortion are all extremist views, but denying people who hold them the right to vote would hardly be uncontroversial. I expect there are people who would consider me to hold extreme views on the basis that I believe in entirely decriminalising abortion at any stage of pregnancy, don’t believe in custodial sentences for the overwhelming majority of crimes and think we should defund the police.

Who gets to decide what extremism is? You can’t just make a vague statement like ‘oh we all know what extremism is’ and expect it to stand. It’s an ever-evolving concept created by a country’s shifting political perspectives, not a fixed point you can use to exclude groups of people from the process of creating those perspectives.

Some of those things are fairly extreme if not completely bonkers. I'm going to put you on a list for when I come to power 🤣

PinkiOcelot · 24/11/2024 22:25

I don’t think you could possibly know who was either extreme right or extreme left. How could that possibly work?!

JudgeJ · 24/11/2024 22:27

Badgerandfox227 · 24/11/2024 21:43

You want Fascism?

Or Stalinism, to provide a touch of unMN balance!

RedToothBrush · 24/11/2024 22:27

Well I think your view is pretty extreme. What with wanting to disenfranchise lots of people because you don't like their views.

So I guess your name will go on the list of people with extreme views who aren't allowed to vote.

Bravo OP.

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 24/11/2024 22:30

I think that your OP is an extreme political view.

Thepurplepig · 24/11/2024 22:34

I can absolutely guarantee that the OP is a labour voter that is pissed off there is a petition of nearly 2 million people asking for a general election. These people in her eyes will be extremists.

YellowAsteroid · 24/11/2024 22:36

Oh, don’t be so silly @EdgyEagle

FennelFan · 24/11/2024 22:40

But who decides what is extreme? I think Reform voters are extreme. Presumably lots of people would disagree. I think your idea of limiting democracy is extreme so you'd lose out too.

MarvelJesus · 24/11/2024 22:41

EdgyEagle · 24/11/2024 21:45

People here asking me to define what I mean as if we don’t know what “extremist” means. I have also alluded to far-left and far-right.

Only one person so far has commented with a bit of sense and a somewhat normal comment instead of asking stupidness like “define extreme” and “are you saying people who disagree with us shouldn’t vote”. Come off it.

But you would have to clearly define your terms in order to bring this into law. If you think it’s a realistic and reasonable proposal, you must have thought about these points in order to be able to advocate for them. That’s if you want a proper debate, and not just to plop on a goady post and watch the chaos ensue…

InWithThePlums · 24/11/2024 22:44

I think that might be quite an extreme view in and of itself OP 😬 maybe you shouldn’t be allowed to vote?

InWithThePlums · 24/11/2024 22:45

Anyway, if you want to kick off a revolution, this is probably the way to go.

WrigglyDonCat · 24/11/2024 22:48

Switcher · 24/11/2024 22:08

Quid custodet ipsos custodes, buddy. Just think about it for five seconds. How did you think "voting" worked under Stalin?

Quis custodiet ipsos custodes.

With radical and extreme latin like that you definitely don't get a vote 😀

So how will you implement it? Will you ask at the Polling Station if people have extreme views and rely on their responses?

ichundich · 24/11/2024 22:50

Hateam · 24/11/2024 21:49

OK different question

How are you going to find out what the private thoughts of 25 million people are?

The Nazis and the KGB developed some great methods.

MrsSkylerWhite · 24/11/2024 22:51

Don’t be silly.

I think Farage is extreme. I think Brexit was insane.
I live in a democracy though so I have to accept that the majority disagree with me. Insane though I think (know) they are.

Scrabbelator · 24/11/2024 22:54

So you're a fascist? You want to do away with democracy

Alibababandthe40sheets · 24/11/2024 22:54

You have an extreme view @EdgyEagle do you acknowledge that you should be one of the people losing their vote?

I doubt you do which is the same as a lot of other people who also don’t recognise their own extreme views. So that is why it is difficult to figure out where the line on extreme to moderate lies.

FOJN · 24/11/2024 22:55

No.

Stop being part of the problem.

Relieved to see 97% of posters think YABU.

SugarandSpiceandAllThingsNaice · 24/11/2024 22:55

I think you have excluded yourself from voting by your own measure,OP.

InWithThePlums · 24/11/2024 22:56

I signed up to one of the communist parties when I was an enthusiastic 18 year old, and I can’t remember which one it was should I ever need to unsubscribe splitters. I also own a beret.

It’s all over for me when OP gets in to power. Sad

Hateam · 24/11/2024 22:56

OP would you expect the Spanish Inquisition to have a role in this?

But where would your cut off be between those who are left of centre and those who you would term far left? And how would you know those who you thought were not ‘extreme’ secretly are and you have mistakenly let them vote in your regime. Also would people have a second chance if they moderated their views in time for the next election, or would they be banned for life? Are you advocating a one party nation with no democracy?

SuperfluousHen · 24/11/2024 22:57

You don’t believe in democracy. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Pretty extreme view on extremism you have OP.

You have a strange view of 'sense'
