Far-left and far-right ideologies are tearing society apart. Should we limit the influence of extremists?

OP posts:
Nogaxeh · 24/11/2024 23:00

People go to the extremes when the centre stops working.

Concentrate on fixing the problems people have and they will become less extreme.

I signed up to one of the communist parties when I was an enthusiastic 18 year old, and I can’t remember which one it was should I ever need to unsubscribe splitters. I also own a beret.

It’s all over for me when OP gets in to power. Sad

A beret? You're on a watch list for sure. 🤣

How can we do so, without becoming just as extreme ourselves? Do you propose a 'Big Brother surveillance of everyone's political views?

I'm sure you've seen this before. Definitions of extreme change. Some people consider me a 'fascist' because a) they're idiots who don't understand Fascism and b) because I think a bloke in a dress remains a bloke, even if he calls himself Luna or Lulu or Princess Jemima.

To think that people with extreme political views shouldn’t be allowed to vote?
Love51 · 24/11/2024 23:07

Surely the ways we counter extremism are through education and mobilisation of the moderates, not by disenfranchising the nutters?
Loads of people have extreme views about some issues. That's diversity and part of life's rich tapestry etc. We don't educate by driving such views underground. I suspect it would lead to riots if it were implemented.

People here asking me to define what I mean as if we don’t know what “extremist” means. I have also alluded to far-left and far-right.

Only one person so far has commented with a bit of sense and a somewhat normal comment instead of asking stupidness like “define extreme” and “are you saying people who disagree with us shouldn’t vote”. Come off it.

Why is it stupid to ask how you’d define “extreme”? You want to remove voting rights from people, you have to have an idea how that’s decided? Definitions are crucial when laws are made otherwise we may as well just all move to North Korea.

TBH IME there’s a common denominator between far right/left and people who think they’re so right on but get VERY arsey when someone disagrees with them and wants to take other peoples rights away.

Well OP this is an extremist view that does away with democracy so you shouldn’t be allowed to vote.

The UK government definition comes fairly close to covering your proposal:

"Extremism is the promotion or advancement of an ideology based on violence, hatred or intolerance, that aims to: negate or destroy the fundamental rights and freedoms of others; or undermine, overturn or replace the UK's system of liberal parliamentary democracy and democratic rights..."

peanutbuttertoasty · 24/11/2024 23:10

That you, Yvette Cooper?

Sssh and get back to your non crime hate crime, totalitarian, democracy-undermining nonsense. Time for cracking down on voters later!

peanutbuttertoasty · 24/11/2024 23:10

PS yes YABVU, and a little dim.

nomoretoriesforme · 24/11/2024 23:17

Spudthespanner · 24/11/2024 21:42

No. But I don't think you should be allowed to vote. You're fecking nuts.

Brilliant response

VestaTilley · 24/11/2024 23:19

YABVU, anti democratic and - ironically - extremist yourself.

OP would you expect the Spanish Inquisition to have a role in this?

She can’t tell you that! Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition. Their chief weapon is surprise, surprise and fear, fear and surprise.

PermanentTemporary · 24/11/2024 23:30

In 1750 wanting to ban slavery was an extreme view.

No, in other words.

But we don't really need to worry - if we started being asked whether we were extremists at the poll station, 99% of us would say with complete sincerity that we were centrists. Even though I've no doubt that Jeremy Clarkson would consider me a toxic extremist, and so would Jeremy Corbyn, and King Charles, but for different reasons.

Thulpelly · 24/11/2024 23:32

That’s a pretty extreme view to hold, OP

tobee · 24/11/2024 23:34

Ok, so no vote for extremists. But do they still have to pay taxes?

Was that the first poster who said 'get a grip'?

Get a grip

😂😂😜

Education does seem to be lacking here, so yes, that would be an excellent place to start.

LoveItaly · 24/11/2024 23:52

With such an undemocratic suggestion as this perhaps you shouldn’t have a vote either. Who would you ban next, I wonder? Maybe only people who think just like you should be allowed to vote?

Bachellerie · 25/11/2024 00:15

You haven't taken into account tactical voting.

These voters will opt for a “compromise” candidate – someone whose politics they may not share but is better placed to defeat their least preferred candidate.

Badgerandfox227 · 24/11/2024 21:43

You want Fascism?

if i remember hitler came to power via democracy ??? kinda makes the ops point

AfterEightMints001 · 25/11/2024 00:22

personally the whole democratic system is outdated in the current form, especially when the public are led by media sound bites etc

silentpool · 25/11/2024 00:24

I find it so interesting that people who consider themselves progressive are the most narrow minded and controlling of all.

OP, you may not like this but people are entitled to their opinions - you are welcome to disagree with them but you don't get to disenfranchise them.
