To think that people with extreme political views shouldn’t be allowed to vote?

Far-left and far-right ideologies are tearing society apart. Should we limit the influence of extremists?

She can’t tell you that! Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition. Their chief weapon is surprise, surprise and fear, fear and surprise.

Yes!

Gingerlingerlonger · 25/11/2024 02:12

I don't see a centrist even suggesting such an idea so which side do you extreme towards?

Meadowfinch · 25/11/2024 02:22

OP, The fact that you don't recognise your own extremism is ironic.
You'll be wanting thought police next. 😀

Everyone is entitled to their opinion OP, regardless of whether you approve or not. The whole point of a democracy is that while there will always be extremist outliers like yourself, the vast majority of people are more moderate and so more centrist views prevail.

lonelywater · 25/11/2024 03:07

wanting to bar certain people from voting because they are extreme is a totally batshit position to take, so you're disbarred yourself.

Lostcat · 25/11/2024 03:27

Delorian · 24/11/2024 21:43

What a lovely paradox you've created there.

😂👌🏻

MushMonster · 25/11/2024 07:46

98% disagrees with your statenent.
So can I still vote OP? Or do you still want to ban others from exercising their democratic rights?

Switcher · 25/11/2024 07:53

WrigglyDonCat · 24/11/2024 22:48

Quis custodiet ipsos custodes.

With radical and extreme latin like that you definitely don't get a vote 😀

Spell checker doesn't really manage it very well.

kirbykirby · 25/11/2024 07:56

OP, that's a pretty extreme view. Maybe you should take your own advice and not vote?

AgnesX · 25/11/2024 07:58

Everyone has the right to their opinion and therefore their vote. There is an onus on us all to rein in the extremists..

Violetparis · 25/11/2024 07:59

You are an extremist OP, should you be allowed to vote ?

BaklavaRocks · 25/11/2024 08:01

Eh? Of course they should be allowed to vote! I might not agree with the far right, but we are all entitled to our political beliefs and the rise of extreme political views should be a warning to current governments that something is going wrong which they need to change.

Extremism is usually born from oppression or disadvantage in someway. If we want to rid society of extremists, then we need to reduce inequality and improve access to opportunity for all.

It is not a coincidence that the far right of this country, members of EDL etc. are predominantly white working class males. White working class boys are also the group most failed in educational settings and who have the poorest educational outcomes. The two go hand in hand and it's the responsibility of government to change that!

You can't just ban people from voting because you don't like their views!

Sethera · 25/11/2024 08:04

The only feasible way of implementing this policy would be to disallow extremist candidates from standing in elections.

To do that (leaving aside the principles of democracy) would drive extremist movements underground, make them more attractive to conspiracy theorist types, and attract people who might not particularly agree with the extremism but don't like being told how to vote.

Clearinguptheclutter · 25/11/2024 08:06

Of course not, but we need to get a lot better at tackling the extremism as it’s clearly here to stay

Port1aCastis · 25/11/2024 08:17

You cannot stop people exercising their democratic right to vote. We live in a democracy not a dictatorship however you are sounding like an extremist yourself OP

Moonlightstars · 25/11/2024 08:18

ByMerryKoala · 24/11/2024 21:42

The appetite for authoritarian policies is off the chart on this site at the moment.

I think the vote here shows it's really not by the majority.

Hairyesterdaygonetoday · 25/11/2024 08:19

Deadhouseplant · 24/11/2024 21:41

Are you suggesting we do away with democracy?

Looks like it.

Animatron · 25/11/2024 08:44

Without the vote, will the extremist give up and go home? Or will they seek another way to make their views heard?

This childish cancelling of people doesn't work. They cancelled Trump. Look how successful that was.

We must engage with people and hear their views, or they will forcibly make them known. We must include everyone in our society. There is nothing as dangerous as growing the ranks of the dispossessed and the disenfranchised.

And yet, regardless of this fact, you’re not allowed to help these poor kids because it’s ‘racist’. They should just be hung out to dry it seems.

The only acceptable approach for white people these days seems to be self-loathing, which is pretty extremist IMO. No wonder there is so much anger about.
This government will do nothing about it except demonise them further, as we’ve seen with their ‘far right’ slurs.

I find it so interesting that people who consider themselves progressive are the most narrow minded and controlling of all.

OP, you may not like this but people are entitled to their opinions - you are welcome to disagree with them but you don't get to disenfranchise them.

It's a really revealing irony isn't it?!

whereaw · 25/11/2024 14:37

I don't agree with your extreme views myself, but I still think you should be able to vote

Spideyplants · 25/11/2024 18:20

Spouts a true modern day leftie!!!!

ImpatienceOfASaint · 25/11/2024 18:26

I would argue removing and restricting people’s right to vote is an extreme political view in itself…

thistimelastweek · 25/11/2024 18:31

My husband thinks stupid people shouldn't be allowed to vote...

batsandeggs · 25/11/2024 18:32

That’s quite an extreme view. Are you happy to be banned from voting?

Thought not.

thistimelastweek · 25/11/2024 18:44

Didn't say it was my view.
