Daughter getting fat in school

joey197860 · 24/11/2024 07:49

Teenage daughter has gained 22kg in new boarding school. No medical explanation for it and she's very happy, wrll integrated and academically excelling. School has a shop on site and girls have access to kitchen in the evenings. Daughter had major surgery last year and specifically should not eat sugar loaded food. What am I to do? I want to pull her from the school at the end of this term. The school is absolutely no help when I discussed this with them.

Haven’t RTWT but is she on steroids ( prednisolone/ dexamethasone- later less likely as usually short term drug). They can make you feel very hungry.

Bollocks. Do you think a disabled single mum is poncing around skiing in the Alps ? At least read the thread before posting vapid responses.

Edited

What's utter Bollocks is that a disabled single mum can get her kids into boarding school for free. Yeah, you cannot get enough of these stories in the media. Everyone knows disabled people are the most disadvantaged groups in the country, now your spouting this nonsense that they get free boarding school places. Grow up

Thehop · 24/11/2024 18:48

I loved boarding but the huge meals, access to snacks and focus on food left me very overweight and have eating disorders as an adult. You're wise to investigate and get her some help

ConstanceM · 24/11/2024 18:49

PalisadesPatty · 24/11/2024 18:17

Do people really send prep-school age children to boarding school, how sad. Kids learn normal healthy eating patterns by being taught at home around the table with their families, maybe you should rethink outsourcing your parenting responsibilities.

Exactly this. 💯 It's weird and demonic, like an upper class cult where they know their kids will be molested both physically and mentally. Who would sign up for that?

Fond of telling people to grow up aren’t you ? I was a disability outreach worker for 20 plus years. Came across a handful of parents of disabled children whose only solution for providing suitable education for their children was boarding school and the LA provided a bursary. Most of them were single parents whose relationships had broken down and the father wasn’t on the scene. Maybe try to remember that professionals post on MN before you tell people to grow up.

There is zero justification for palming your kids off to boarding school and the idea that regular army can spend money on boarding school is bordering on the ridiculous. It's social engineering pure and simple as mummy and daddy ponse around skiing in the Alps.

The army offers heavily subsidised boarding places to allow children continuity in their education when parents are routinely required to relocate due to changes in postings. I can’t remember a time when this hasn’t been the case tbh.

Until very recently boarding schools operated as charities and bursaries were part of their charitable status requirements and were funded through alumni donations. If you had spent 20 seconds on Google you would have avoided embarrassing yourself publicly.

You need to start another thread Constance.

At no point did I say that the child had to be disabled. The solution was for the disabled parent, depending on circumstances, and that was where my input was - supporting the disabled parent. I think it’s you who needs to grow up.

The friend I am referring to is a much older person.
There are some schools that provide places at 7 but very few.
Schools that educate very young children do so in a family setting around a housemaster/mistress. I'm not defending the system but it's important to know the facts.

This is not the majority, you are peddling mistruths. 95% of places are rich folk palming off their kids. I don't make the rules, it's weird and wrong in most cases. Read Earl Spencer's autobiography then get back to me

No one is saying it’s the majority, but they’re not peddling mistruths. For myself, just putting in my tuppence worth based on actual experience instead of prejudice and ignorance.

Of course ES is someone we should all believe.

There are many many books on boarding school experiences by people who aren't aristocrats. Maybe you should read those? I would add he's only been able to be published because of his family connections.

Constance - you are a bit out of your depth here. I've worked in boarding schools and your opinions are not a reflection of reality.

Show me the data of a) How many disabled parents have children in boarding school? then b) Give me a social geo-demograhic breakdown of their social economic group (ABC1) and where they live in the country. Eg (South East) It will be groups with friends in high places. The SAHM in a tower block in Nechells Birmingham is NOT getting a place in boarding school. Stop being weird

Not engaging with this any more. You posted in ignorance and you’ve been called out on it by several posters. Accept it and move on, because you’re derailing the thread with this nonsense.

Why would being single and disabled mean all 3 of your kids get bursaries to private school? And even if they are bursaries, op still has chosen to send her kid away. This is not the first boarding school from what she says and the child could attend as a day pupil but op has chosen not to do that. If you’re hugely worried about your child, you have them home of an evening! Bursary or not! Surely?!

Presumably on this kind of bursary support there are significant challenges at home. Boarding school days are very different to state school days, they start much earlier and finish much much later (7pm when prep is finished) This is to accommodate all the extra sporting and cultural activities - sport will be daily with one day a week likely devoted entirely to sport. There will be classes on Saturday morning and sports matches on Saturday afternoons and Sundays after chapel. It’s full on and the much longer holidays reflect this. It would be exhausting to commute back and forth to school on this schedule and if all her friends are at school she would miss out on the in house downtime where strong friendships are bonded. She would be exhausted and isolated.

Now you're casting aspersions on ES lived experiences and traumas of ritual & systemic abuse. How dare you? Your also biased in that you work in such devious and toxic institutions. "Take his word for it" Yes, he will grasp an audience due to his status as a famous person, that's how literary autobiographies work, nobody buys a life story about Bob who lives down your road.

The ES is getting on a bit. Modern boarding schools are very different with an emphasis on child protection and children having access to mobile phones and internet to contact parents at any time.

Exactly, this moron has added their own twist. Pathetic

TickingKey46 · 24/11/2024 19:23

How old is she?
Surely the school have a duty of care? If she had put that amount of weight on at home, most schools would have had a chat with the parent about it.
The school can't just except no responsibility for this! It's like saying the parents have no responsibility when a child's over weight and living at home.
