My dd is friends with a child in school who has recurrent headlice. The school mum is an acquaintance through our dds & every time her daughter gets a dose of the lice she texts me rather accusingly to "check my daughters hair". I do this weekly & she is always in the clear. She isn't texting any other mums as I've asked a close friend from the class... I'm actually getting very upset over the constant messages! Aibu? What do I reply.. Tonight I said "dds out at a match, I'll check when she gets in".. She saw the message didnt reply.. I dutifully checked dds hair with the nitty gritty all clear.. I text back "dds hair all clear. Best of luck treating your dd". Read n reply. Aibu to be seriously pissed off & where do we go from here. My dd is not the culprit!

If this is the 7th time, I really would tell her that as this is now the 7th message and your daughter has never had them you don’t understand why she keeps telling you to check and nobody else - clearly they are coming from elsewhere!

whowhatwerewhy · 22/11/2024 19:31

Just reply " sorry x has got nits again, and your concerned she will pass them on . As x has a reoccurring problem have you spoken to the school to ask for advice on how you deal with them . I appreciate this is time consuming but y hadn't had nits for 3 years . We do bla bla and use bla bla . "

MadnessIsMyMiddleName · 22/11/2024 19:40

Sorry but this all seems a bit OTT to me. The fact that this woman is contacting you, means that you check your DD's hair, would you rather she didn't tell you, and then you find your DD scratching only to find that has them? Nits aren't caused through dirty hair, so it's certainly nothing to feel that you're being blamed for. If you feel so inclined. and see her poor daughter as being the one who's passing them on, then you might be kind enough to offer advice and tell her how you've managed to keep them away from your DD. I'm afraid nits in school is all but inevitable, especially if your child is blonde and female, as that appears to be nit's first choice.

HellofromJohnCraven · 22/11/2024 19:49

Put her in your phone as Nitty Nora, Flea Explorer. It'll take the edge off.

Honestly it sounds fine and I think more people should text when they appear.

Texts and emails can be hard to gauge tone, but I'd assume the best of intentions and just keep checking. Forewarned is forearmed and all that.

One year we had them up until the summer holidays. We were treating them properly, wet brushing, tea tree the works but a couple of other kid's parents were regularly holding off treating as they (understandably)had to wait till pay day and it meant they were constantly getting passed back around.

Next time tell them that they don’t need to wait for payday. You can use any shampoo to wash and then any conditioner combed through the hair from root to tip with a fine tooth comb available free from the Common Ailments Scheme.

I’d text her 6 times saying “My DD appears to have symptoms of Twat Disease tonight, can you check your DD for it as maybe she’s got it from you?”

Did you just suggest calling a child a twat because their mum sent some passive aggressive texts?

What the fuck is wrong with you?

I check my daughters hair two sometimes three times a week, more if the school send out an email that it's been reported within the class. Dd has very long hair so it needs to be checked. I don't appreciate being messaged for the 7th time with "check your dds hair"...

So why don't you tell this woman that OP? Just text her next time she makes contact, and say 'thanks for the heads up, but I already check my DD's hair 2 or 3 times a week, so don't need the frequent reminders'. There's really no need to get so hot under the collar about it all.

As a matter of interest, what colour and length is your DD's friend's hair?

Westofeasttoday · 22/11/2024 18:14

Good shout and maybe add something like “thanks so much for letting me know again. We have been lucky as my dd hasn’t had it but maybe we should widen the message so that other parents can be aware so hopefully we can get to the bottom of it soon because unfortunately you seem to be suffering from it and we haven’t had it so it must be coming from somewhere else”.

Fully agree - it's good to put the cherry on top

What the fuck is wrong with you?

It’s called having a sense of humour.

Can I advise you look into getting one?

I thought it was quite obvious it wasn’t a serious post but I guess humour isn’t for everyone

Comff · 22/11/2024 09:10

That message doesn’t need a reply? I wouldn’t reply to it.

Yeah what sort of reply are you expecting?

I have a sense of humor, it just doesn’t involve jokes calling little girls twats.

Oh no

My goodness, I can see now that you’re just a lovely, well-meaning person. I don't know how my original assessment could have been so wrong.

LL1991 · 22/11/2024 22:02

Not relevant but could we have a recommendation for the leave in conditioner that works!? :)

LL1991 · 22/11/2024 22:04

Ignore me, just seen you've already posted it! Thanks! I'd defo say something to the mum and say 'please can you respect school protocol as I know you only message me and I'm finding it quite accusatory at this point!'

Nor is yours. You can't just say random stuff calling a child a twat and say it's "sense of humor" so that's OK then...and expect everyone to go oh yes hahahaha how funny.

Actually I can, and did say that.
I don’t actually think the child is a twat. The post was to cheer up the OP.

honestly surprised people have taken it so seriously. I could never imagine being so professionally offended about something hadn’t even happened

You can say it yes
But you can't expect everyone to find it HILARIOUS that you've called a child a twat

Hankunamatata · 22/11/2024 22:43

I know a mum was like this. The issue was she didn't treat her dd hair properly. She thought chucking on lice treatment once and not combing solves the problem.

And I didn’t call a child a twat. Stop being such a drama llama
