It was extremely productive of Sir Tom, at his great age and not in the best of health, to dash off three books in his dying months AND get a deal with a publisher.

I am assuming that he wrote every word.

Uricon2 · 24/11/2024 13:03

I thought the medal thing manipulative, it just isn't done outside Remembrance and very formal occasions. I read something and can't remember where or the source so am hesitant to repeat, but apparently H I-M came up with idea of him being called "Captain Tom" and he (apparently) said he couldn't do that because he retired in 1945. It still happened whatever the background and it's rather sad if he did see that it wasn't OK.

In an article in the Independent on Friday a journalist who interviewed H I-M in 2022 mentioned (in the context of a wider reflection on recent events) that when he met her she had completed 6 chapters of her autobiography

"It would be the human story, she told me, of being the daughter, going on that journey with her father and all the things she had been taught by both her parents (her mother, Pam, died in 2006 aged 71)."

(David James Smith, The Independent)

The grandiosity is utterly boggling.

Wonderful use of irony there, CHEESEY13 Wink and I can't pretend I hadn't thought the same

Theres an insinuation that very elderly people can’t be total arseholes. They can. They get to about 80 and are infantilised”. Given the crooked nature of Moore’s offspring and the dodgy dealings, rule breaking and over-egging the technically incorrect ‘captain’ thing, it’s not a total stretch to say he may have fallen into arsehole category

I so agree with this! The constant use of 'Captain' drives me insane. Like it adds more weight to his sainthood or something. I was absolutely roasted on here for criticizing the grifting wazzocks 😂

Are we going to see her on I’m A Celebrity, or maybe exiled to an island?

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 24/11/2024 15:57

@CHEESEY13 @Puzzledandpissedoff Of course he did you pair of cynical shockers... just like his dying wish was for his family to build a spa complex to remember him by. Which is a totally normal thing to do and the fact that I haven't yet turned my garden shed into a sauna shows just how little I really thought of my lost loved ones 🤔

Probably for series 2 of the same one they sent Phillip Schofield.

That wouldn't surprise me in the least.

I've just been reading through that old thread from 2020, linked a couple of pages back. Hilarious 😂Old Tom was being positively canonised.

Was Captain Tom a bit of a finger up to the lefty woke brigade who were supporting NHS workers, low paid critical workers, working from home etc?

Lets make the figure head of Covid resilience a figure from our golden generation who had achieved a bit of wealth for him and his family? Did Hannah see that opportunity and the full backing from the Daily Mail and Telegraph that would follow such a figure head?

fedup33 · 24/11/2024 19:33

How do this brigade function? Are they on horseback, who is their General?

I wonder what the other sister thinks of all this? I have never seen any sign of her being involved in this sad business or commenting on her sisters actions ? K

You don't think that the papers would have discovered that??

It's a vile thing to say with absolutely no evidence

I saw the other day that his other daughter tried to set this up but it looks like nothing came of it as I imagine people don't want to align themselves with the family name and risk lining Hannah's pockets anymore.

I also wonder how things really are between them. Interesting that she hasn't put any kind of statement out in support of her poor beleaguered sibling who was being bullied by the nasty charity commission 🙄.

And how much are they personally giving to this initiative?

They have no shame.

Perhaps it’s guilt over all the trees felled to print their Captain Tom books.

I currently work for a small wildlife conservation charity which is a complete scam. Does bugger all for wildlife however management are well rewarded. It has completely destroyed my faith in the charity sector as a whole. Heartbreaking really.

TheNinkyNonkyIsATardis · 21/11/2024 09:08

I've worked for small local charities, and you'd have no idea from the accounts what a shambles they were.

Also rife with big personalities, trustees drafted in as social favours, and absolutely terrible management of serious issues.

I had to step in as a junior member of staff to prevent or correct serious mismanagement many times (working PT for convenience during studies, but actually with far more experience than the leadership).

I wouldn't give a penny to a small charity, especially one dealing with any sort of serious issues.

levantine · 29/11/2024 13:39

I have worked for a couple of very big, household name charities, and have been a trustee at a tiny local one. The big ones were fine, but I just wanted to say that the small one was so incredibly careful about everything, right down to people who were trustees never getting any preferential treatment in the services the charity offered, no queue jumping at all let alone careless use of funds. So they do exist.

Tavaress · 29/11/2024 15:12

I heard them being interviewed, the daughter said it was her fathers wish that they kept the book money separate.
They didn't imply that to the public though who thought the book money was being part of the walking money.
I haven't heard they have handed any money back yet, looks like they are toughing it out until the story dies down.

Darker · 29/11/2024 15:30

I’ve worked for many small to medium charities and I’ve also volunteered. I’d say most charities are continually evolving, and most are striving to be better.

If I was looking for another job now, I’d avoid charities that are run by their founder. That’s not to say there are not many great people doing amazing work through charities that they have set up themselves - I have met several and am in awe of what they do - but it can be very challenging working for a charity through the early days and equally challenging when a founder holds on as CEO when the charity needs someone new.

Ooh, isn’t she lucky that she clearly and unequivocally remembers him saying that... especially as he's no longer around to 'forget' it, retract his words and writings or change his mind...?

Ooh, isn’t she lucky that she clearly and unequivocally remembers him saying that... especially as he's no longer around to 'forget' it, retract his words and writings or change his mind...?

But it was in his opening remarks in the book that he was looking forward to it raising more charity money.
