I was shocked to hear the book wasn't being sold to make more money for charity

mids2019 · 21/11/2024 06:07

I had my suspicions form the start where there were probably many charity events running at the same time and the BBC have this air time. There were rumours about the family's connection to the media and their experience in PR.

The connection of COVID to the golden generation was well thought through and Sir Tom seemed a bit too perfect for the role of national hero.

Not surprised at all.

roastiepotato · 21/11/2024 06:16

The sad thing is that Captain Tom's name is now linked to the whole scandal rather than his walking in his garden and getting money for ipads for dying patients and treats for nurses

Frostycottagegarden · 21/11/2024 06:21

I actually didn't give them a penny at the time, because it felt off.

mids2019 · 21/11/2024 06:23

Was Captain Tom manipulated by his family to do his charity walk? The family obviously had contacts that allowed current serving members of the armed forces to be present.?

It just seems the worst kind of greed.

Userxyd · 21/11/2024 06:33

Ugh it's all so seedy especially when they were wealthy to start with. The BBC article says:

Mr Holdsworth urged the Ingram-Moores to "follow through on the commitment that was made and donate a substantial amount to the charity".

I guess we'll see what they value more- piles of cash or their reputation 😕

ChocolateTelephone · 21/11/2024 06:43

They are horrors. Greedy, deceitful, manipulative graspers who exploited the good faith and generosity of people genuinely moved by the sincerity and effort of their father/FIL in order to fund luxuries well beyond the reach of the people the charity was intended to help. Shameless, wicked, unforgivable greed.

The original appeal that raised £38m was all legitimate. There’s no question that that all went to NHS charities. It’s the foundation that was set up afterwards that was dodgy.

Phase2 · 21/11/2024 06:56

It's greed isn't it. First a desire for a bit of fame by contacting the local papers and then more wide recognition. Not enough to get the added extras (Barbados GrinConfused) but obviously like a pp said couldn't resist the £££ looming.

ThianWinter · 21/11/2024 07:00

Sheer greed, coupled with lack of morals and blatant dishonesty. They have tainted Captain Tom's name for ever. He will never be thought of as that benevolent old man, walking round his garden to raise money for the NHS, he'll be remembered for his scrounging family.

I don’t think they probably anticipated that the initial walking round the garden thing would become such a massive fundraiser but when it did they also assumed that “captain Tom fever” would have a longer shelf life than it did and so figured they’d cash in on a “sequel”. I think they imagined they’d have this huge foundation with millions in income from which they could draw big salaries and that just didn’t happen so their pilfering was extremely evident- things like being paid a salary to represent the foundation but then taking personal
appearance fees to represent the foundation. The planning thing was farcical. They deserve the flack they are copping and more.

the daughter was a leader in PR with connections in the cabinet - they probably did.

SprigatitoYouAndIKnow · 21/11/2024 07:11

It is such a shame his name is linked to all this corruption now. I donated when I first heard and he was only on a couple of hundred thousand then. No regrets, as that money did go to the charity ot was intended for. I don't know why people expect him to have lived the life of a saint, he was just a man walking around his garden that happened to get famous.

Why the faux disgust at the ‘daily fail’? You clearly read it. It doesn’t make you look virtuous, but a bit silly to pretend not to when you are literally quoting it.

Performative, much?

Mindymomo · 21/11/2024 07:23

She just got greedy and I really think she thought she didn’t do anything wrong. £18,000 for an appearance and just paying £2,000 of that into the charity, she must have been laughing at the time.

vivainsomnia · 21/11/2024 07:23

Me! I posted that I believed she was behind the whole thing and in it for herself when I refused to put a penny in it. No need to say I got totally slatted here at the time!

I sincerely wish I had been wrong but the gut feeling was very strong.

Well obviously she’s read it, i assume the apology is because some people on here hate the mail and make comments. It’s an acknowledgment that it’s a shit paper.

GoldenLegend · 21/11/2024 07:24

There’s an article in the Guardian for anyone who doesn’t want to read the Fail.

A shot paper that all the lefties read?

Not surprising, most lefties practice hypocrisy. Say one thing and do the exact opposite.

Everyone gave it loads of coverage- it was all over the tabloids.

AmusedMaker · 21/11/2024 07:27

This is such a shame.
The whole thing now tarnished.

And agree about all the ‘daily fail’ stuff.
I don’t think MN would survive if it wasn’t for all the daily mail articles linked & discussed.
So clearly a lot of people on here read it.

True - at least the right are honest that they despise the vulnerable and have no intention of supporting anyone but themselves.

I read the DM, along with the Times, FT and Guardian. I find it useful to calibrate my views and understand the perspectives of other people with different life experiences to mine - I find it stops me making sweeping generalisations about large groups of people that can come across as ignorant.

Dweetfidilove · 21/11/2024 07:30

Folks being greedy and dishonest - never a surprise.
