Ha, when we used to watch it we used 'plate of food' as a drinking game. Soon had to stop that!

😂

cariadlet · 29/11/2024 07:00

I bet Dave Gorman really regrets the big Gregg Wallace segment that he did in his last stand up tour.

Slimey arrogant old lecher. Would never surprise me if a big scandal comes out in later years.

Well this aged well Confused

NigelHarmansNewWife · 29/11/2024 07:57

Although the programmes he's on are broadcast on the BBC, they're made by different production companies. I think that is one of the ways the likes of this horrible man gets away with this awful behaviour. Presumably the Beeb has a supplier code of conduct? Clearly it needs to do more. This thread has demonstrated at least one poster thinks there's nothing wrong with lewd jokes. There's not much that shocks me, but I am surprised this wanker has behaved in this way in this day and age and hasn't been pulled up on it before now. He's clearly full of his own "celebrity" importance and should have received training, guidance and a reprimand every time he acted inappropriately. He is arrogant and believed he was untouchable.

sharpclawedkitten · 29/11/2024 08:00

There's now a legal duty on employers to prevent sexual harassment so maybe they will do more in future.

I would have thought Kirsty Wark would have been able to wipe the floor with him when he made inappropriate comments to her. He wasn't in a position of power with regard to her.

The Beeb is still accountable. In much the way that if M&S was selling pants supplied by a third party using slave labour.

Big names can't keep their hands clean by putting a third party in between themselves and the abuse. The Beeb in particular with its old boy chumocracy has a shocking track record in protecting abusers and entirely by shocking coincidence doesn't have a very good record on women's pay and careers.

There are plenty of things the end buyer can do - to address abuse in their supply chain.

The least talented (and luckiest) man on tv

Hmmm, doubt he's feeling particularly lucky this morning and I did nearly, accidentally, type "licky" there

I was a contestant on MC about 15ish years ago, and despite being in my early 30's at the time, I still looked like a teenager (relevant - not a stealth brag). I was also the youngest female contestant that episode.

John greeted me like a normal human being, but Eggggg held my handshake for far too long in his clammy little trotter whilst simultaneously grinning and looking me up and down like a hairless hungry butcher's dog eyeing up a fresh steak. I was instantly creeped out and wary.

Filming took two insufferably long days. The whole time, Mastertwat was cracking lewd, dirty jokes that forced innumerable cuts and retakes. By the second day, even the people who had been nervously/politely laughing couldn't take it anymore. It was just Eggggg, guffawing into the void at his own hilarity. The crew's deep dislike for him was palpable.

Completely disillusioned and not wanting to spend a millisecond longer in his company proceed any further in the competition, I made a point of giving Egggg the Paddington hard stare and calling him Craig anytime I had to interact with or refer to him.

Long story short, I threatened to walk out on day #2 when he massively ramped up the sleaze factor, made a nasty 'joke' about the size of another female contestant's nose (which made her cry), and embarrassed us all by association in the professional kitchen, where the actual working Chefs all referred to him as 'That Cunt'.

This was the point where I was reminded that I had signed a contract that forced me to see out the filming of the episode, AND that there was a non-disclosure clause in there too. The BBC have known what he's like, covered for, and encouraged his disgusting 'laddish' behaviour for a VERY long time.

Interesting as one of my clients saw similar, probably about a decade ago.

He was a contestant, hated the atmosphere and the lewd jokes and what he considered to be outright bullying of one of the female contestants. He was also reminded very firmly about his contract and the NDA and reminded the lawyers would be visiting if he breached his contract. At the time he was in a fairly junior position and just wanted to get away from it all.

I wonder how many more contestants will come out of the woodwork now that any attempt to enforce an NDA will be blown away as its public domain?

crumblingschools · 29/11/2024 08:55

Is the NDA so people don’t spill the beans on who won? Not defending GW’s behaviour but I don’t think his behaviour was the reason for the NDA

We've currently got the Harrods scandal and now the MasterTwat scandal. Both involve NDAs.

I think we may see some reform of NDAs in the next couple of years.

ruffler45 · 29/11/2024 09:03

Why has this come out now? What has triggered it we dont know about yet?

His understanding of the NDA was so that stuff wouldn't be leaked about winners, surprises etc in the show. That is fair enough.

However they were very broadly worded and effectively the bit on reputational damage to the show seemed to be the part used to suppress any whistleblowing and protect pervy "talent." In the case of the crew, not only do they sign NDAs as part of the contract of work but they can kiss goodbye to career progression - the power wielded by the "talent" is ludicrous and very different to eg the power of a senior manager in a normal business.

IANAL but I think its already illegal to use an NDA to prevent crime reporting but of course you have to be able to prove a crime to defend yourself agains tthe NDA wielding predators.

DrZaraCarmichael · 29/11/2024 10:01

NDAs are very standard in film and TV. I work (very occasionally) as an extra and there is aways a multi page NDA to sign. We are not allowed to say ANYTHING about the set, what scenes we filmed, who was there or not there, even the name of the show we were working on. So I would be allowed to say I was filming in July as a peasant on a period drama, but wouldn't be allowed to say the name of the production or name drop an actor I saw on the day. All crew sign similar NDAs. I have seen junior members of production crew treated very badly on occasion on set, not usually by the "talent" but mostly by other members of the crew. Most people are lovely and friendly, there are some absolute arseholes around who think the way you get ahead is by swearing and humiliating.

I have an agency representing me as an extra and can feed back to them if we have been treated badly. And I have on occasion - things like not getting a break, or being sent to sit for hours in an unheated holding room in January. Actors are in Equity/BECTU and have an agent, production have the right to join a union to represent them. But who is representing these contestants on a talent or competition show?

Strictly has brought in chaperones to accompany contestants in the wake of allegations of bullying by some of the pro dancers, maybe this should be standard in all of these types of shows.

I remember seeing GW on Who Do You Think You Are and got a very uncomfortable vibe from him. Not creepy (there weren't really opportunities to be creepy I guess) but INCREDIBLY needy and unstable. He was really really emotional about his discoveries - nothing wrong with that - but it came across as utterly self-obsessed and sort of grandiose luvvy whilst being deeply insecure at the same time. I was left thinking, gosh that man needs some therapy.

GoodLaudanum · 29/11/2024 16:27

When are the BBC going to actually grow up and do something about the people they employ and endorse??

Is it possible to cancel one's TV license and get your money back?

. . . I am now actually thinking it is time to get rid of the BBC

Samcro · 29/11/2024 17:10

Sorry if it has been covered but I don’t understand why the program with him in it is still being shown.
Jay has been edited out of the repair shop, Jermaine was just booted. There was a guy who was in a 5 part drama and they dropped the last episode.
so why is it still on?

NetZeroZealot · 29/11/2024 17:13

Good question. I wonder if it is because GW has not done anything actually illegal (just extremely offensive), while JB has been charged by police?

He hasn't been found guilty of anything. I'm not a fan but being innocent until proven guilty is reasonable and it's what our justice system is based on. I'm not a fan of trial by media.

And I'd like to see the rest of the series of Celebrity Masterchef. If others don't want to they don't have to watch.

He was sexually abused as a child apparently which may have a bearing on his needy and unstable nature.

Whats the common factor with the 2 men you have named..?

Samcro · 29/11/2024 18:37

Thanks for the response. Both answers make sense.

but neither Jay or Jermaine had at that time been found guilty. Don’t think the other guy had been either.

This is so bad. This is so clearly aimed directly at Brand. This isn't ribald innuendo. It's disgusting.

I have been a bit reluctant about the pile on that's going on, but for this alone he should have been asked to step away from Masterchef. What the hell is going on at the BBC?
