Help me like coffee

Welcometothezoo · 20/11/2024 18:31

I really like the smell of coffee.

I am 24. I tried drinking it when I was a bit younger and hated it, too strong

I've got a more 'adult' taste 😂so was wondering how to like it as I bought a flat white with no sugar from Star Bucks - loved how frothy it tasted but the coffee was a bit too strong

What type of coffee might I like?! There are so many - Mocha, flat white, Americans, etc etc I'm confused by

Sincerely, a very tired carer who does need caffeine

I think the answer could be to just keep drinking it though and maybe I’ll just come to like the taste eventually after I’m addicted to it?

I’ll try either a latte or a mocha again in Costa tomorrow and just ask for 1 shot and see how that goes.

Was just going to suggest 1 shot! I find 2 shots far too strong in some places. I used to also hate coffee but lattes are now my go to. Costa lattes for me are just right, Starbucks and others I find far too strong. Dont forget to give it a stir first either as it all just gets dumped it and not mixed!

Latte, with a shit load of sugar in it!

thelastjamtart · 20/11/2024 19:35

Tea.
That is the correct answer.

Justanotherteacher · 20/11/2024 19:37

Everything you’ve tried is milky. Try non-milky. Either an americano with at least one sugar, or better still, filter coffee with two sugars if you can find somewhere that still sells filter coffee.

Respectfully, OP, this is a bit mad. You don't like it. Even a notoriously weak coffee like a Starbucks flat white is too strong for you. Just accept that you like the smell and not the taste. It's not a character flaw!

I remember telling myself I would never be considered a grown up unless I taught myself to like olives, coriander and coffee.
2 outta 3 ain't bad.

LufthName · 20/11/2024 19:47

When I needed to start taking on caffeine I just went straight for a black americano. Lavazza is the best! Made at home with a coffee press

CrocusBluebell · 20/11/2024 19:53

If it's just caffeine you want you can buy caffeine pills

I’ve tried filter coffee at one point too, it tasted too strong in my opinion unfortunately.

How did you learn to like the taste please? I can’t even drink lattes at the moment, I don’t like the taste of them at the moment and I also think it tastes a bit strong but maybe that’s just because I don’t like the taste of it yet?

My ds has weaned himself onto liking coffee by starting with iced coffee and the chilled stuff that you can buy in cans. Then he moved onto latte, ideally with caramel or vanilla syrup. Basically anything milky and sweet.
He's at uni now so think his main coffee of choice is crappy instant at this point.

StoneColdAlibi · 20/11/2024 21:20

I trained myself to like coffee at 41 as it annoyed me that I disliked it.
Started by having a shot of espresso each morning, like taking medicine.
Then moved onto milky coffees with a shot of syrup.
Love it now

I tried 3 sugars in the mocha.

Just the one will do 😂

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 20/11/2024 22:56

I don't like coffee.
It doesn't like me.
I'm 54, this isn't going to change, but that's fine.
My coffee-free life is rich in many other ways.

19lottie82 · 20/11/2024 22:58

caramel latte

AntiHop · 20/11/2024 23:03

Ask for half a shot.

smithsinarazz · 20/11/2024 23:16

I almost know how you feel, as I don't like coffee either. But it's ok, it's not mandatory.

bracemyselfagain · 20/11/2024 23:19

Are you a Mother?
If not, have a baby - you'll soon get the taste for it.

minipie · 20/11/2024 23:29

I didn’t like coffee till my 30s. I now love it but I’m still fussy about what I like. And I did wean myself on gradually.

Agree with previous comments:

Ditch Costa, Nero, Starbucks. Seek out small independent places. They are coffee nerds who will not serve you burned bitter crap, unlike the big chains.

Ask for a flat white or latte with one shot only, maybe even half a shot.

Definitely oat milk or almond milk. They are sweeter. Or start with a little sugar and then reduce it and eventually move to oat/almond.

You could try mocha although personally I just find it tastes like disappointing hot chocolate.

Another option in some coffee shops is a dirty chai - chai tea (milky, spiced, sweet) with a shot of coffee in it.

Quality of the coffee is KEY especially when you don’t really like the bitterness of coffee. Better coffee made by a better trained barista in an independent is smoother and less bitter or sour than chain coffee. (of course there are exceptions both ways).

Autumnweddingguest · 20/11/2024 23:33

Try a latte

Americano with hot milk is one of the weakest.

You might like cappuchino with chocolate on top

PinkArt · 20/11/2024 23:41

I weaned myself onto it at uni as I could tell the amount of red bull I was drinking was bad for me. I started with mochas with syrup, then lattes with syrup, lattes with one sugar and carried on reducing the sweetness down to about a third of a teaspoon with a flat white my preferred barista coffee. Its always been too bitter for me by itself but I just need a smidge of sugar to take the edge off.
It might just not be for you though and there's no point forcing it if that's the case. I've tried with red wine for years and still think it tastes yucky!

Moonlaserbearwolf · 20/11/2024 23:51

You haven’t tried good coffee if you’ve only tried places like Costa and Starbucks. Starbucks is particularly bitter.
Ask your friends to recommend the best coffee in town and try a latte.

vegaspotty · 20/11/2024 23:57

OP my daughter only drinks water or apple and blackcurrant squash! She is in her 30s ...she hates coffee and tea .
