Help me like coffee

Welcometothezoo · 20/11/2024 18:31

I really like the smell of coffee.

I am 24. I tried drinking it when I was a bit younger and hated it, too strong

I've got a more 'adult' taste 😂so was wondering how to like it as I bought a flat white with no sugar from Star Bucks - loved how frothy it tasted but the coffee was a bit too strong

What type of coffee might I like?! There are so many - Mocha, flat white, Americans, etc etc I'm confused by

Sincerely, a very tired carer who does need caffeine

Just keep drinking it! Soon you will be addicted and love the taste. Maybe add a little sugar or sweetener to start with.

Maybe this is the way then? Maybe if I just keep drinking it then I’ll soon become addicted and eventually come to like the taste? Maybe that’s the way I’ll come to like the taste of coffee then?

Just wait, age will make you love it whether you want to or not. I still couldn’t stand it at 24, 20 years later and I don’t function without it.

Don’t go back to Starbucks, but it might be worth trying a one shot latte if you found it too strong otherwise. Not sure what the point of that would be though if you want a caffeine fix!

It was a Costa one that I tried.

I don't love Costa, you could try Nero, they do tend to be pretty sweet. Ask for one shot though.

Nogaxeh · 20/11/2024 18:56

Mocha has been my gateway into coffee. That and coffee chocolates and coffee cake.

I also find that the more tired I am the less bothered I am by the taste.

Lemonyfuckit · 20/11/2024 18:56

I 'like' coffee but also don't like flat white as I find it a bit too strong - so maybe cappuccino? - still have the nice frothy milk and a bit of chocolate sprinkle but not as strong as a flat white and not as milky as a latte which I find too milky. My favourite is a filter coffee though so you might like that - ie nice and round coffee flavour, long, not as strong or bitter as espresso or flat white, so less likely to need sugar or sweetener.

Welcometothezoo · 20/11/2024 18:57

I’ll just try and keep drinking it and then maybe I’ll eventually come to like the taste once I’m addicted to it?

I don't think you can make yourself like it. I love the smell of coffee but it's absolutely vile. I don't know how folk love it so much. I tried a caramel latte with extra sugar and I still think it's horrible. I don't even like hot chocolate either, I cld def drink that though. I love tea thankfully 😁 although I never like it from the likes of Costa it's just never as gd as how I make it at home.

Mabelface · 20/11/2024 18:59

Costa isn't great. I find their coffees actually a bit wimpy! I started with a mocha then moved on to lattes. I'm now and Americano with oat milk girl, no sugar. Only started drinking it in my mid forties.

Promise I'm not a coffee snob, but Starbucks might be your issue here - their espresso tastes burned and acidic to me.

Download Best Coffee app and find a "proper" barista. Order a half shot oat flat white, which should taste sweeter and frothier than what you had before. Use this as your gateway drug!

Yeah I agree with this - I don't think I'm a coffee snob either but loads of the chain coffee shops' coffee is often burned or scalded tasting which makes it bitter. I have a nice filter coffee machine at home which just makes such a rich but smooth, never bitter tasting coffee (and you can completely vary how strong or not).

FierceQuiet · 20/11/2024 18:59

Respectfully, OP, this is a bit mad. You don't like it. Even a notoriously weak coffee like a Starbucks flat white is too strong for you. Just accept that you like the smell and not the taste. It's not a character flaw!

LilacLilyBird · 20/11/2024 19:00

I love coffee but I need sugar or sweetener

WestwardHo1 · 20/11/2024 19:01

Go to Spain.

Learn how it tastes there. You'll like it.

Yours sincerely, a tea lover

I just stick to eating tiramisu. I've never been able to drink coffee despite liking the taste.

Same. Tiramusu and coffee cake are grand! Tried coffee itself on and off for maybe 20 years and have given up now.

StomaAndMe · 20/11/2024 19:07

I find Starbucks coffee to be pretty weak, so if you're finding it strong you might struggle. I love coffee but only order hot choc in Starbucks.
A nice indie coffee shop might be better, if you find a good one you could ask the barista what they recommend.
Also flat white I wouldn't say is a good intro to coffee if you're not keen as they're not that milky. A cappuccino might be better?

I started on Instant when I was about 12, loads of milk & 3 sugars gradually reducing milk & sugar until I liked fresh coffee.

Have you tried the Nescafé latte sachets, they do caramel or vanilla ones and aren't too strong. Once you get used to them try something else.

Try chai latte instead, it's tea.

cherish123 · 20/11/2024 19:10

I didn't like coffee at 24 but like it now. I only drink decent real coffee. I'm not surprised you didn't like it if you had one from Starbucks. The coffee in these chain coffee shops is pretty horrid. I think they taste like instant coffee.

Ponoka7 · 20/11/2024 19:13

I use the skinny syrups. Out and about I'd buy a toffee latte, then a Mocha. I now like cappuccino without anything added. I also buy the syrups from TKMax. If I'm in someone's house, I just have sugar or sweetener. I only started drinking coffee when I was 53.

Surprisedcupcake · 20/11/2024 19:16

Do you like chocolate? My way into coffee was chocolate. I heat up milk, make a hot chocolate and add a spoonful of instant coffee to it. I got use to the taste that way and moved on to mocha and then onto coffee.

Snorlaxo · 20/11/2024 19:19

My dd worked as a barista and they normally put 2 shots of espresso into a latte but sometimes customers would ask for as little as half a shot. They paid the same price as a latte with 2 shots but returned for coffee on other days so were presumably happy.

Flat whites are stronger than lattes so I would avoid it.

Mochas could be the answer if you’re a dark chocolate kind of girl but ask for less espresso than their normal recipe.

NeonGreenHighlighter · 20/11/2024 19:24

I would recommend starting with a Mocha too, or a frappe. I’d also avoid costa - you get nice mochas and then some really bloody bitter horrible ones depending how it’s made. Starbucks is a little more reliable

I can’t stand other coffee but I managed to enjoy these about two years ago after being a pure tea freak

Coconutter24 · 20/11/2024 19:28

Welcometothezoo · 20/11/2024 18:49

I’ve only tried a Starbucks once and that was a flat white, the other times it has been Costa that I’ve been trying but it’s always tasted too strong and I’ve never liked the taste.

Edited

Costa is quite bitter tasting. You could add a syrup to sweeten or just ask for 1 shot so it doesn’t taste as strong. If the coffee is too strong then only having 1 shot is probably the best way to go

Pinkelephant66 · 20/11/2024 19:29

Put sugar in it

Welcometothezoo · 20/11/2024 19:30

Pinkelephant66 · 20/11/2024 19:29

Put sugar in it

I tried 3 sugars in the mocha.

I’ll try either a latte or a mocha again in Costa tomorrow and just ask for 1 shot and see how that goes.
