Help me like coffee

Welcometothezoo · 20/11/2024 18:31

I really like the smell of coffee.

I am 24. I tried drinking it when I was a bit younger and hated it, too strong

I've got a more 'adult' taste 😂so was wondering how to like it as I bought a flat white with no sugar from Star Bucks - loved how frothy it tasted but the coffee was a bit too strong

What type of coffee might I like?! There are so many - Mocha, flat white, Americans, etc etc I'm confused by

Sincerely, a very tired carer who does need caffeine

I think the answer could be to just keep drinking it though and maybe I’ll just come to like the taste eventually after I’m addicted to it?

Why on earth would you do this?! If you don't like the taste of coffee the only way you will enjoy it is by adding masses of sugar and/or flavoured syrups.

Think yourself lucky that you don't like it. It's far better for you not to drink it. And just think how much money you are saving!

Like you, I love the smell of coffee. I also like coffee flavoured things (eg coffee cake). However I don't like drinking it (or tea).

I agree with other pp’s that Starbucks and Costa coffee isn’t great, go to a quality cafe which has good reviews in your area.

When I was new to coffee I preferred iced latte’s

& if you ever find yourself in London go to Rosslyn (Bank station) or Beechhall (Hackney)

AutumnLeaves24 · 21/11/2024 00:25

I think you might like a seasonal latte. If near a Starbucks, try single shot seasonal latte, but I hate to say, I get NO buzz from coffee (and that's with an extra shot) and usually just straight as there's too much sugar/sweetner to have the syrups for me.

Jumpingthruhoops · 21/11/2024 00:31

Decaf latte. All the flavour and aroma with none of the strong coffee/caffeine hit!

Spedledrift · 21/11/2024 00:56

You might learn to like it if you persevere, but you might not. Eg I have never enjoyed ale or lager and I am confident that I never will. But that's ok, surely - you don't need to drink coffee (or any other particular drink) to have a good life!

But if you genuinely want to find out if you can like coffee - save up and have a holiday in Italy if you can. Taste the real thing.

QueenBitch666 · 21/11/2024 01:07

Starbucks and Costa etc are shite. Hence the need to put all sorts of sweet crap in to make them drinkable. If you don't like coffee don't force it. Just stick to what you like. Or purchase some Blue Mountain coffee and get stuck in. Decent coffee doesn't need anything added 😎

ScaredSceptic · 21/11/2024 01:15

Did you ask for the blonde roast in Starbucks? Their standard roast is bitter and nasty but the blonde roast is mellow, creamy, sweeter, and just delicious if you don't want a strong coffee.

So I'd recommended trying a Starbucks blonde roast latte.

TheGirlattheBack · 21/11/2024 01:25

Starbucks, Costa and Nero coffee is all vile. Go to a decent coffee shop, perhaps try it black with some sugar. Could you ask friends who like coffee where to get the nicest coffee locally?

Alternatively, buy/borrow a cafetière and some ground coffee and make your own. You can then experiment with how you like it - milky, black, sugary etc … go for a mild roast coffee if you buy ground coffee.

caringcarer · 21/11/2024 01:27

Have you tried vanilla coffee beans. They are so nice and not strong at all. Nothing like the sickly vanilla syrup some people pour into their coffee.

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 21/11/2024 01:29

For a lighter coffee try a latte but decaf; it's slightly less bitter than caffeinated. Consider sugar or a syrup shot but milk is sugary, so taste first.

AcrossthePond55 · 21/11/2024 01:37

I'm in the US and love coffee. Get a coffee maker and brew your own. Start with an automatic drip maker, they're easy to use and to adjust the amount of coffee. And they very rarely 'burn' the coffee as long as you don't let it sit on the heater plate for hours. At least here in the US you can get good ones for a reasonable price. Start by following the maker's recommendation for water to grounds and take it from there. Once you get the taste for auto drip coffee you can upgrade to a 'fancy' coffeemaker and start experimenting with different beans and various strengths and methods of brewing.

I like a dark roast and I drink it black, occasionally with half & half for a splurge but never with sugar or sweetener. You may want to start out with a blonde or medium roast and add milk and sugar. You can gradually decrease the milk and sugar if you want to learn to like it black. I used to take it with milk and sugar, but eventually learnt to like it black.

Instant coffee of any kind is an abomination and always tastes nasty. Don't bother trying to find a 'good' one, it doesn't exist.

I enjoy a latte or a 'sweet fancy' coffee drink now and again. Coffee 'drinks' are fine, but that's not really 'drinking coffee'.

tygertygers · 21/11/2024 06:30

Costa coffee is awful. But the bigger problem is that you live in the UK where hardly anyone makes a decent coffee. I'm a Kiwi (home of the flat white) and when I was in the UK for a couple of months recently I just about gave it up altogether. Sorry guys, you do lots of great things (like sausage rolls, beer gardens, greasy spoons, canals) but you are shite at coffee.

MikeRafone · 21/11/2024 06:40

Try a latte with a syrup instead of sugar

ask at the counter which syrups they have and get them to add that to your latte

MoserRothOrangeandAlmond · 21/11/2024 06:42

I'm like this with tea. I've tried it every way! I just don't like the taste!

I've given up 🤣

I do like a coffee and cappuccino is my favourite!

Sofa1000 · 21/11/2024 06:45

I think half the people in coffee shops don’t really like coffee. They like milk and sugar.

PoupeeGonflable · 21/11/2024 07:03

Anything over- milky (cappucino, latte) is an abomination, not a coffee. Indeed, any shop that adds pumpkin fuckingvspice, flavoured syrups or ice to a coffee should be closed under the trades description act. !

What you need to do is ask a French or Italian person to make you a coffee in a moka machine.
But really, it's so complicated with different roasting strengths, varieties, preparation, etc, that if you don't like it, you are unlikely to find a brew you like!

PrincessHoneysuckle · 21/11/2024 07:05

I trained myself to love black coffee and now I can't have milk in it.Much prefer it.

teatimelover · 21/11/2024 07:06

Ask for one shot if they are putting in two shots of coffee.

Autumn38 · 21/11/2024 07:06

Welcometothezoo · 20/11/2024 18:42

I’ve tried mochas too, good suggestion but I also found the coffee a bit strong too, definitely stronger than the chocolate taste. Only tried a mocha once though.

Maybe try a decaf coffee? So have a decaf latte with a syrup shot?

StamppotAndGravy · 21/11/2024 07:26

The coffee shops use very dark roasted beans so that you can taste them in a bucket of milk. They're way to strong and bitter for a nice flat white. It's not you, it's their coffee!

I would suggest buying instant or filter coffee for home with mild roast (labelled 1-3 out of 10 for flavour, or 1‐2/5 depending on shop). Make it weak and add plenty of milk.

GroovyChick87 · 21/11/2024 07:35

I agree with buying instant coffee and making it at home to your taste. Adding as much or as less of anything that you want.

x2boys · 21/11/2024 07:38

If you don't like coffee ,you don't like it i find it very bitter and I don't like tea either .

DoodleDig · 21/11/2024 08:31

Add sugar. Get a normal (Americano?) coffee and add milk and 2 sugars. I used to dislike coffee, then one day I tried it like this and loved it.

brunettemic · 21/11/2024 08:57

Latte with a syrup in is the way I started. I say started, that’s the only type I drink 😂
