To find a lost wallet and keep the money inside

Today I found a wallet on the floor in ASDA. A decent leather, heavy wallet with credit cards inside etc. I quickly handed it into a security guard who then handed it into customer services. Told DH and he asked if I kept the money inside? He was half joking but said that he would keep the cash as a “finders fee” and that it served the boomer right for dropping their wallet (it was a wallet of an older man)

Tried to talk to him, would he really keep the money he found and he would! Although he then accused me of starting a fight.

Boomers?

As in the 2 generations that shared across the baby boom era?

The youngest being in their 60s and the oldest almost 80, so even youngest around retirement age?

Ah yes, serves those damn entitled pensions right for wanting food from a supermarket. They should stay at home, out of sight out of mind and have mush delivered through meals on wheels only obviously.

Trickedbyadoughnut · 20/11/2024 15:23

Oh, I remember your other thread.

I am really glad you have a plan to leave him. He is a nasty piece of work.

Feelingathomenow · 20/11/2024 15:24

I’m sorry you are married to a bigoted thief. Does he also think it’s ok to steal from people based on their sex, or race?

Hes a bullying tosser

caringcarer · 20/11/2024 15:32

My DS found a wallet in Asda many years ago and it was stuffed full of £180 cash. He handed it in and was told to leave his name and address. A couple of weeks later he got a thank you card with a voucher in it. A Mum had been given the money by her parents to buy herself and her kids Xmas gifts and lost it in the shop but didn't realise she had dropped it. Keeping it would be stealing in my book.

Also admitted to pinching stuff at the self service tills in Tesco - scans most stuff but sneaks some stuff through. Came home a couple of years ago showing me a new wallet that he didn’t scan, was so pleased with himself. We had a huge fight and he made a big deal of coming home with groceries saying how don’t worry, everything has been scanned and paid for. Urgh.

I'd have been fuming and go back with him and he tell them he forgot to scan it and if he didn't I would. What a poor model for you DC a thief as a Dad.

AInightingale · 20/11/2024 15:35

He sounds vile, he reminds me a bit of my ex.

I found someone's phone once and the bloke brought me flowers & chocolates when I met him to return it! There are nicer humans, pity you're not married to one.

I found €1,500 on the floor at the supermarket where I work. I immediately handed in to Customer Service and someone had claimed it within half an hour. Several of my colleagues said they would have kept the money if they were me.

Who carries around that much cash (apart from a drug dealer, not saying this person was BTW!) but of course would never keep it...

FindersKeepers1 · 20/11/2024 13:16

He steals stuff from work - not money or big items but fills his bag with supplies! I could never 👎

i take pens and paper from the office (when i go in) but the WFH so think that's ok, even if i let me kids use them... pennies really!

huuskymam · 20/11/2024 15:41

No because I'm not a thief.

I found a wallet full of money when I was a young teenager - must have been at least 20 £20 notes if not more. I walked to the local police station - handed it in with my details and about 2 weeks later had a letter delivered from the owner with £100 in thanking me for my honesty.
To do anything else is obscene - probably some poor old man's pension for the week
:(

when i was teen and had found a bit of cash (not 100s) i would definitely have kept it...but that was a long time ago!!!

Lulubo1 · 20/11/2024 15:46

That "boomer" could have dementia or Alzheimer's! How does your husband think it serves him right? Your DH is a disgusting person!

JoshLymanIsHotterThanSam · 20/11/2024 13:47

Wallet-absolutely not.

Stray loose tenner randomly on the ground..yep Ill have that thank you very much.

I once saw a woman leave a tenner in a self service checkout in Asda. I took the tenner out and waited by the exit for ten minutes to see her come flying back in looking all dishevelled….and handed her the tenner back. I knew who it belonged to so it was the right thing to do to give it back.

I once helped a confused elderly lady using the self checkout in Sainsbury's. She'd paid in cash by feeding in £20. Her change had been turned via coins and a tenner out of a slot. She clearly knew she was missing ten pounds, but her eyesight was poor and she couldn't see the tenner. I'm guessing the OP's partner would have just swiped it from under her nose.

LightDrizzle · 20/11/2024 15:51

What a horrible man and a thief to boot. A thief who steals from his own employer.

It would entirely out me off.

samanthablues · 20/11/2024 15:51

So your husband thinks it’s ok to steal from an old guy? He’s probably a pensioner who drop his wallet. Who did you marry OP? 🤔

EarthlingHere · 20/11/2024 15:51

God your husband is a prize, not. I once found a wallet, it had about £150 in cash inside. When I got to customer services, there was a pretty hysterical mum. That was her and her children’s food shopping and gas/electric money for the week. You just never know. Your husband is a disgusting person.

GoldenLegend · 20/11/2024 15:55

If I were you I'd be prepared for my husband getting fired from work for pilfering at some point. I worked in various offices during my working life and the most I ever 'stole' was photocopying personal stuff on the office copier!

ButterCrackers · 20/11/2024 15:56

You did what you would want done to you. If you had lost your wallet you’d be so grateful to get it all back including the cash. It’s the right action to give back the wallet with the cash.

Jacopo · 20/11/2024 15:58

Was in a very busy crowded area in central London and saw a woman taking something out of her bag and simultaneously dropping her credit card on the ground without noticing. I immediately pointed it out as I walked past and she was so grateful. The thing is, it was me that felt great the whole evening afterwards. I don’t understand how people no longer understand how good it makes you feel, to do the right thing.

BoudiccasBangles · 20/11/2024 15:58

My late dad insisted on using cash. He had very little money. Keeping the cash would have left him in great hardship. He also had credit cards and was constantly in debt. If you’d seen his wallet your DH would have thought he was a “boomer” too.

Yalta · 20/11/2024 16:04

BunnyLake · 20/11/2024 14:28

Then your husband is a would be thief. Disgusting.

He is a thief already

Cantbelieveit888 · 20/11/2024 16:06

Yeah not great OP. Shows his true colours/morals and for that reason I wouldn’t want to be with a man like that.

Justleaveitblankthen · 20/11/2024 16:07

Wow! I would judge him harshly for this.
How horrible.

LoyalMember · 20/11/2024 16:07

How long have you been with this man? Did you always suspect he was a lying, thief?

goingforbronze · 20/11/2024 16:08

A friend of mine told me a story about finding a purse on a bus when travelling abroad years ago. He took some of the cash and handed the purse to the driver when he got off. His thinking was that the driver would have kept it anyway, the owner was long gone and he wouldn't go to the police in a country like that. He saw it as a lucky windfall, enough for a nice meal out. Dodgy morals obviously but it got me wondering about the context of these things. It shouldn't matter where or who but it changed things in his mind as he said he'd never do such a thing at home!
