To find a lost wallet and keep the money inside

Today I found a wallet on the floor in ASDA. A decent leather, heavy wallet with credit cards inside etc. I quickly handed it into a security guard who then handed it into customer services. Told DH and he asked if I kept the money inside? He was half joking but said that he would keep the cash as a “finders fee” and that it served the boomer right for dropping their wallet (it was a wallet of an older man)

Tried to talk to him, would he really keep the money he found and he would! Although he then accused me of starting a fight.

No way, that would be awful

TianasBayou · 20/11/2024 13:09

That is stealing. Full stop.

Stormyweatheroutthere · 20/11/2024 13:10

So he's a thief? Attractive quality...

ilovesooty · 20/11/2024 13:10

Your husband's attitude is disgusting. What kind of values is he teaching your children? Has he always been ageist, dishonest and a bully?

Bowietips · 20/11/2024 13:10

That's really horrible of your DH 😢

ObtuseMoose · 20/11/2024 13:11

It served the 'boomer' right? Yeah, massive turn off right there.

PrawnofthePatriarchy · 20/11/2024 13:11

I wouldn't dream of it. Keeping the cash would be stealing.

doodleschnoodle · 20/11/2024 13:11

'Served the boomer right'

Where did you find this prince among men, OP?

IsawwhatIsaw · 20/11/2024 13:11

So he would have stolen the money..

I couldn't even consider having sex with someone like that.

Hedgerow2 · 20/11/2024 13:12

Awful attitude. Stupid to judge someone's financial position based on their age. Immoral to take money from the wallet. How would he feel if someone did that to him? Karma will get him!

OswaldCobblepot · 20/11/2024 13:12

So he justifies it by saying it belonged to a boomer anyway. Boomers deserve to have things stolen from them? Nice.

KeepinOn · 20/11/2024 13:12

I recently found a wallet of an older gentleman at the shop, not once did I consider stealing the contents. I only looked inside to confirm his name before handing it back to him - he was a few paces away and I just wanted to be sure he was the right person!

FFS. Pensioners don't deserve to be robbed no matter how often people like to call them 'boomers' in a derisory fashion.

Berlinlover · 20/11/2024 13:12

I found €1,500 on the floor at the supermarket where I work. I immediately handed in to Customer Service and someone had claimed it within half an hour. Several of my colleagues said they would have kept the money if they were me.

LittleRedRidingHoody · 20/11/2024 13:12

Eugh. DF dropped his wallet when I was a kid and he'd just taken out all the food money for the month in cash. He found the wallet but the cash was gone - 20 years on I still remember how rough a month that was 😬

OhMehGoddess · 20/11/2024 13:13

I have found multiple purses and don't even look at them. Just hand them in. Also found a bank card once and just handed it into the police station I walked past.

My husband lost his wallet and an elderly man handed it the police station who called him. My husband left £20 for the gentleman with the police as a gesture.

Bluevelvetsofa · 20/11/2024 13:13

Sounds like your DH is quite happy to steal then. As well as happy to be ageist. Most of the posts I see locally are from younger people who have left/lost phones, cards, passports here, there and everywhere.

Of course you did the right thing. I’d be considering what I felt about someone who is apparently happy to steal.

Pandasnacks · 20/11/2024 13:14

No, that's brazen theft which you most likely would have got caught for as supermarkets have security cameras anywhere.

FindersKeepers1 · 20/11/2024 13:14

I asked him again - would he actually steal the contents of the wallet and he basically said not if the person was standing right next to him!

Whothefuckdoesthat · 20/11/2024 13:16

That would make me look at him very differently. I’d be pretty disgusted with him. He is not a good man.

FindersKeepers1 · 20/11/2024 13:16

He steals stuff from work - not money or big items but fills his bag with supplies! I could never 👎

How can you even live with someone like that?

Tittat50 · 20/11/2024 13:18

These threads are interesting: in this case, no way. I'd hand it in knowing there's a high chance the guy will get it all back rather than Asda sticking it in their til. I'd want the owner to have all their money back and could never take a penny.

When I read threads about people accidentally getting sent something free or twice by a large retail organisation, I think, I'd keep that. And yes I'd be called a thief. My conscience would really be ok on that one.

I'm surprised he didn't suggest you should have tried spending money on the debit card given that he'll clearly thieve if the opportunity presents itself, after all you could have got up to £100 worth of stuff by just scanning it at the till.

Horrible attitude on his part, and then when challenged he goes on the attack by saying you're trying to start a row.

He sounds like an absolutely peach.
