Should we be worried about war

Seen a lot in the news about Ukraine using USA missiles against Russia. I've been thinking more along the lines that it won't start a WW3 and will resolve at some point without the UK getting directly involved in war. But there seems to be more and more tension and threats of an all out war recently.

Should we be worried about WW3? I haven't been prepping or anything but does make me wonder if I should start getting a few days worth of food in case. At the same time I don't want to go down the prepper hole and start getting over the top.

I actually think most people are concerned about a conventional rather than nuclear war for exactly these reasons

(sorry I meant to quote @Whatafustercluck below)

I can't edit my post for some reason but if I could, I'd remove the laughing emoji

It's a serious topic and people are suffering across the world due to war. I was just trying to make light of how terrified I am x

It's really irritating you can't delete emojis. You can't even refresh the page to get rid of them. Don't worry about that.

WW3 was predicted. I think it'll happen. Was kind of hoping it was when I was long gone like.

Even if it doesn't directly affect us violence wise. It will affect us and our needs. We'll probably have shortages and things will be grim at the very least.

I’ve thought since Russia first invaded that this would lead to a world war, and I hope I’m wrong. If you look into what’s happening geopolitically (e.g. Sweden & Finland joining NATO) it’s all pretty terrifying. I can’t give it too much head space, it’ll make my life worse while changing nothing.

They're joining NATO precisely to deter and avoid this. It's a good thing. Ultimately what is needed is robust European defence and deterrence again. We need to accept increased defence spending and part of the preparatory pamphlets is about making civilians resilient (also part of deterrence.) no point having nice things if the population is under threat

No, I don't think so. It might make things more comfortable over a short while but the response to food security in the event of a war, would need to be state wide. Taunting yourself with the idea that you could mitigate this is just terrifying you more, offering you an avenue to ruminate over it and it wouldn't make any difference.

Personally, I'd wager the house that we won't end up in this situation. But I think being pragmatic about how minimally you could prepare for something like this might be a route out of this fear loop that you have found yourself in.

Sounds like the sort of head-in-the-sand arfing that prefaced all other wars.

idrinkandiknowthings · 19/11/2024 13:31

Us rank and file can do absolutely sweet fanny fuck all about it. No amount of prepping now will make any difference. A nuclear winter would last 15 years, so unless you've already got the fully-stocked bunker with air filtration you're knackered.

I'd prefer myself and my DD to have front row seats and be vaporised in micro-seconds 😔

Thank you, yeah its so weird, seems like an oversight

I just think about how so many of us will cope. Mine has autism, I imagine life for us would be so so tough 😢

I imagine me and my dd doing what that old couple on the titanic did, lay in bed and wait for death

Then get myself into a state and start crying, then have to shake myself out of it

I probably do need to relax a little bit, omg

I've worried for years about WW3, so much so that I'm not worried now! This has been going on for years. Im not saying it won't happen but I do tend to agree with some people who think we are already in it in a digital way.
There are many ways this could play out. There's a thread in the Chat section by some people who seem very knowledgeable on the situation. I find it comforting to read their opinions.

Food insecurity is a given in the future regardless of war

The four horsemen of the apocalypse prophecy
1st - the conqueror
2nd - world war
3rd - widespread food insecurity
4th- death by sword, famine, plague, wild animals

Probably best to avoid stoking fear in already anxious people and doing Russia's work for it by posting stuff about Threads etc ala @oakleaffy

MrsPeregrine · 19/11/2024 13:41

Yes, I am really worried. I find it highly suspicious that Biden made the decision days after losing the election. Firstly I don’t think Biden is actually making any decisions - I think someone behind the scenes is. Secondly I’m actually wondering if this a desperate attempt by the Democrats to try and keep Trump out, or create issues before he gets into office.

EclipseoftheHeart1 · 19/11/2024 13:43

Well I've always said absolutely not a once this war started but surely putin won't be able to accept this and will retaliate?

FinFacts · 19/11/2024 13:43

Not worried, but prepared.
Finland and Sweden are handing out instructions to all citizens of what to have at home, and how to cope in crisis. Obviously geographically much closer, but i don't think it hurts to be calm but prepared for anything. It might not be a full-on war, but power problems, internet, banking system failures etc.. Good to have means to stay warm, cook, eat, buy food etc if theres a problem for a few days. You should be able to cope for 72 hours.

Edited

It didn't happen then- and the world REALLY looked to be on the verge of Nuclear Armageddon then.

Mum and loads of her friends on days off went to Greenham Common.

Remember, the Oligarchs and Biden/Trump love their lives too much to want to be in a bunker for decades.

Hiroshima/Nagasaki was appalling and made people aware of the reality.

RethinkingLife · 19/11/2024 13:40

I'd guess somewhere like Sweden.

But leaflets like that tend to be distributed on quite a regular basis in some countries as useful reminders against flooding, localised problems, general power outages etc.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-14096437/Sweden-citizens-prepare-WAR-Pamphlets-stockpile-food-water-sent-five-million-households-growing-fears-NATO-Russia-conflict.html

Oh wow - I can see something like that happening here tbh, I think we'll be experiencing power outages for example

I wonder if there'll be a reintroduction of landlines as well, given how bad the signal is now that Huawei don't operate in the UK

standardduck · 19/11/2024 13:48

I think if you are that worried, you should stop reading the news for a while. I don't believe there will be an all out WW3, but even if there was - stockpiling a little bit of food and extra toilet paper won't make a difference. BUT, I think the general advice is to always have food & water for a few extra days in case of emergency, natural disaster. So if it will make you feel a bit calmer, I'd do that.

I am in Nordics and we always have some extra canned food & water, batteries in case of an emergency.

Why bother replying?

Maybe because not everyone thinks the same and it provides a bit of balance.

standardduck · 19/11/2024 13:50

Also that daily mail link about Sweden delivering pamphlets it's fear mongering. It's shared every few years and not just in case of war; but as I mentioned earlier - in case of a natural disaster etc.

I think articles like that cause people to be anxious for no reason.

oakleaffy · 19/11/2024 13:51

Mum remembers ''Protect and Survive''..where one was meant to hang white sheets on the windows to deflect the blast, and to make an ''inner core, or refuge'' under the stairs with buckets for poo and also water.

That was so say delivered to every household up and down the UK.

'When the Wind Blows'' was basically about the futility of that booklet.

It would be so horrific for everyone, Worldwide.
