Should we be worried about war

Seen a lot in the news about Ukraine using USA missiles against Russia. I've been thinking more along the lines that it won't start a WW3 and will resolve at some point without the UK getting directly involved in war. But there seems to be more and more tension and threats of an all out war recently.

Should we be worried about WW3? I haven't been prepping or anything but does make me wonder if I should start getting a few days worth of food in case. At the same time I don't want to go down the prepper hole and start getting over the top.

Russia should not be interfering with Ukraine. Period. The invasion was a big mistake. The Ukrainians want nothing to do with the savages in Russia, and after this - never again. I feel pity for Russians being lied to and misled; their children being killed for this pointless posturing.

Dappy777 · 19/11/2024 14:52

Russia can’t even subdue Ukraine, so what chance would they have against NATO? It’s climate change combined with overpopulation you want to worry about. The world’s population has gone from one billion in 1900 to eight billion today. That’s a staggering and unbelievable increase. Africa’s birth rate is so high the African population is going to double. When climate change gets worse, those huge populations are going to migrate, leading to major tensions and wars. People will fight over land, water, food, etc. If climate change makes large areas of the world uninhabitable, and reduces the amount of resources available, violence is inevitable. It’s going to be grim.

2017... three years after Putin invaded Crimea.

The small detail of Russia invading crimea created an understandably hostile atmosphere. Ukraine have been preparing for war since then, thank goodness.

Gingerlingerlonger · 19/11/2024 14:53

In the case of all out war, what good would having a few days food in do. So why bother.

PrettyPickle · 19/11/2024 14:54

I think I am a "wannabe prepper" and that is not just in relation to war. If you live in a rural community, when bad weather hits, you are used to ensuring you have supplies to see you through. I should imagine that is areas where droughts are frequent, people stockpile water supplies and if your income fluctuates, when you have a decent wage you put a bit aside for the times you are not doing so well. Its all about probabilities.

So yeah, I have food and water supplies for a couple of weeks plus a wind up radio and lots of batteries, I have an emergency backpack with survival stuff in for a few days. I rotate it so it never goes off and it gives me reassurance.

When our water main burst, I was the only one not having to trek down the street to the water bower as I had tons of water to cook, clean and flush the loo.

Does that make me a doomsday merchant ....no...you just never know what is around the corner and being a pragmatist, I like to be prepared (just like Scouts).

I think there is a reasonable chance our supply chains maybe disrupted be it war elsewhere, WW111, Trumps Trade levys, agricultural strikes, climate change etc...etc.

Anyone else feel a donation to the Ukrainian armed forces coming on?

Artistbythewater · 19/11/2024 14:55

There is not going to be an all out war, because Russia have no resources, no means to even repair the ones it has, and the army is in absolute tatters. It will take decades to restore at least.

You have been brainwashed. Or you are seeking to spread mistruths deliberately. The only population to be ‘shelled’ are those in Ukraine.

Ordinarily I would be sanguine because same old same old. However.... this is concerning......

This is nothing new. Russia said this before.

Menopausalprincess · 19/11/2024 15:01

I think there’s a good chance that food and power supplies will become less reliable over the next few years - because of war elsewhere in the world and/or climate change, or even a non-nuclear war that we’re engaged in directly. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with a bit of light prepping, eg making sure you have a torch & batteries, access to clean water and some tins in the cupboard. After all, it’s not the ‘preppers’ who are stripping the supermarket shelves at the first sign of trouble!
As a pp said, other country’s governments are sending out leaflets to help their population be ready, why wouldn’t you? It helps the whole country be more resilient. This isn’t about surviving nuclear attack, it’s just giving yourself some options if bad things happen!

You mean when the Ukrainian government took action in their own territory against a pro-Russian insurgency orchestrated by covert Russian agents (the "little green men")?

This is nothing new. Russia said this before.

Putin is a scared little man desperate not to lose face and fall out of a window. Hence the sabre rattling. Biden was absolutely right to do this, if too late.

T4phage · 19/11/2024 15:03

Who cares? At least we won't have to put up with starmer's hellscape Britain anymore if we're nuked 😘

MajorCarolDanvers · 19/11/2024 15:03

If WW3 happens prepping is pointless

Artistbythewater · 19/11/2024 15:03

You might do the same for bad snow days, but I do think we should not be playing into Russian hands by panicking- that’s exactly what they hope you will do.

Putin has no intention of killing every Russian citizen with a nuclear war he can’t finish.

IOSTT · 19/11/2024 15:03

I’m going to buy some iodine tablets, bottled water, a handful of snack bars, and some aluminium foil to cover myself in, then shove that all in the wardrobe and hopefully not think about it again

What use would worrying about war do you?

Yes, this. I am nearly 60 and have learnt that there is no point in worrying. I spent my teenages years worrying about a nuclear war and it was a total waste of time.

I am, personally.

It doesn't consume my daily thoughts constantly, but the world keeps getting shittier and shittier. We've seen this kinda war set up before and I doubt Russia will stop if they 'beat' Ukraine.

I think it is the people in the west who are in favour of prolonging war who want people to fear that.

Matthew Syed in the Times has written a very interesting piece recently on the way Europe has sat back and spent its money on welfare while being happy for the US to foot the bill for NATO.

Apart from the UK and possibly France the european members of NATO have not paid their way on defence and have relied far too heavily on the US.

I wasn't surprised when Trump said in his first term that europe needed to pay its fair share or the US may not come to the rescue...

I don't think encouraging Ukraine to join NATO is a particularly good idea either.
