Inheritance Tax

Is it wrong to try and avoid inheritance tax? Is inheritance tax itself unfair? Has your family taken any measures to avoid it?

Looks like Rachel Reeves is being investigated as well on tipping off Mr Tufnell.

Tufnells tax avoidance move should be cancelled and he should have to stand down as MP.
What a disgrace

Why? It’s entirely legal and any other farmer could do it right now. As long as it’s done before the owner dies it’s perfectly legitimate. Incidentally I can find no evidence of any such investigation.

StandingSideBySide · 02/12/2024 13:54

In the news it states Gareth Davies has written to Rachel Reeves and asked if her or any members of the Treasury or advisors let Mr Tufnell know about the impending tax changes.
Mr Tufnell has stated, again in the news, that his family were looking at the inheritance of the farm and took measures to protect it. He states the timing was a coincidence.
Labour haven’t commented as yet, so we’ll see if it can be proved.
All we know for definite so far is Reeves and Tufnell knew each other.
So we’ll wait and see.

Him writing to her isn’t an investigation. And as you’ve been told repeatedly there’s nothing to ‘see’ because there’s no cheating. If he did it just before or just after the budget or 5 years ago or 5 years from now or any time before he died he’d have the same advantage. The only way it would look like a tax fiddle is if he had a terminal condition and could reasonably have been expected to die between hearing it was going to happen and the law changing. Stop trying to talk down the country (isn’t that what was said when people criticised Tories handing money in the millions directly to their mates?)

I’m not talking down anything.
I’m stating what’s in the news.
If none of its true in terms of insider information then I dare say it will come out. Just as Mr Tufnell has already said it’s a coincidence.

the point you seem to be deliberately missing is that it doesn’t make any difference to anyone or anything even if it’s not a coincidence. Nothing corrupt has happened. Nobody has avoided a tax because of prior knowledge.

I don’t think the news is saying the family are deliberately avoiding a tax ( although I’m sure some will say this ) I think they are suggesting the coincidence could suggest ‘insider knowledge’ led to the family taking action.

Thats what Davies is querying ie was the tax changes deliberately leaked early to those it might affect

Insider knowledge isn’t a thing unless it gives you an advantage though.
It makes no difference if he found out early, either by accident or design. It hasn’t given him an advantage, so it’s not corruption.

Precisely. Just another stick to try and beat the government with. Except this is barely a twig. I note the usual lack of link.

Yes, Daily Fail article tomorrow: Mumsnet Vipers are Tax Dodging Bastards.

That seems more in keeping with the Grauniad than the Mail, the Mail's readers would probably approve of anything that keeps their money out of the Government's clutches.

StandingSideBySide · 02/12/2024 15:40

🤣
As it’s in various news outlets and we all have access there’s very little need here for a link, however
I saw it in the local news first
Heres the title page @ Pembrokeshire- herald.com

Of note
It seems to have become a National pastime to berate whatever Party is in power. Labour isn’t immune, they aren’t special, nor more than any other.

There is the need for a link if only to alert us of the source. Thank you for doing that as we now know it’s a Daily Heil/GB News smear attempt.

The original source is actually the Pembrokeshire news

GB and The daily Mail have picked up on the story…….for obvious reasons that you have alluded to.

What if someone has bought properties (from earned income which they have already paid tax on) in order to provide a rental income for their pension? They then pay tax on the rental income they receive - and then potentially pay IHT out of their estate when they die!!

Yes, that’s how it works. All money is taxed repeatedly.
