To ask for things that you believe have declined in quality

I'll kick it off with Fairy Liquid!
Has anyone else noticed this? I have a dishwasher but often wash certain things, eg my big frying pan, by hand. You'd certainly need a mighty big squeeze these days, for a proper foamy lather.
Anything else? If nobody mentions Cadbury's chocolate, I will eat the Oodie I'm currently wearing Grin

“Emotional labour”? Are you having a laugh? Saying please and thank you, and smiling At the customer isn’t exactly a big ask, part of the job description surely? I think saying that being pleasant to a customer is too much to ask, or “pandering to superiority” just about sums up perfectly why most interactions are shit now.

And yes, I did work in a shop when I was younger so yes, I do know that a lot of customers can be horrible. But I also know that, like most things in life, you often get back what you give out.

Edited

I also worked in shops and restaurants as a student and even when having a bad day my manners dictated that I wanted to be polite to people

No Wonder there’s a problem with the work ethic of young people when they’re told saying please and acquiescing to a food allergy so “emotional labour”

It's less that I don't expect a smile and more that I truly don't care whether minimum-wage staff smile at me or not.

Obviously you can make customer requests sound as reasonable as you want but from what I witness in shops, the customer is very often in the wrong and on a power trip over an employee they know can't push back. It's sad to see.

I actually didn’t mention a smile originally I said I wanted no eye rolling. Is not rolling your eyes emotional labour??

It’s unreasonable to ask for adjustments due to allergies and intolerances?

Sorry you have such low standards in your life.

Public transport
never been exceptionally luxury but usually was clean and quiet enough
now usually filthy, extortionately priced, full of people (of all ages) scrolling tiktok loudly or playing music/ FaceTime at full volume
its unbearable

SurelySmartie · 17/11/2024 12:00

Cake and scones - the number of places selling good quality freshly baked cake and scones is now minuscule.

’Wool’ jumpers - they’re all horrible acrylic!

New buildings - some of them are falling apart after a few years.

I agree, even when I check the label information of eye watering expensive brands, it’s all acrylic and polyester. I can’t believe they expect us to pay 100-200 £ for a sweater made of plastic.

I actually don't mind acrylic jumpers, as wool makes me itch.
I do have a pure wool cardi, but is has a wide and low boat/scoop neck so over a tee-shirt it doesn't touch my skin. It is fabulously warm! So wool is much better for warmth if you can wear it.

What I hate is the blouses, tops, and tee-shirts all being artificial. So often I have liked the look of a blouse on the rack, gone to touch it and recoiled at how horrible it feels.
I only wear cotton next to skin, or sometimes bamboo, or for shirts a poly-cotton mix. Getting so hard to find something of acceptable thickness.

kawabungah · 17/11/2024 12:03

Also underwear/knickers especially
hard to find pure cotton styles that arent some ridiculous fit / shape

ilovesushi · 17/11/2024 12:05

Mobile phones. Mine is over a decade old and still going strong whereas DC and DH seem to need to a new one every couple of years not necessarily because they are after the latest model, but because the phones jack in.

Lentilweaver · 17/11/2024 12:05

Knickers with broad gussets almost impossible!

God yes this. Also agree with driving.
Also customer service- and I worked in that area for years and years. I had some pride in providing excellent service. The only place I have found any decent service lately is Primark oddly enough.
I would add:
British fruit and vegetables ( if you can find them now)
Pasta from most supermarkets
M&S knickers

How funny we posted similar. I used to buy Calvin Klein for years then it went to tiny gusset style and felt like I was being cut in half! Now I only buy the ‘John Lewis everyday 5 pack knickers’, cheap enough and cotton. Full bum coverage but not granny style. Washes / dries well too. Can’t post a link but think they’re about £12ish for 5 pack

SqueamishHamish · 17/11/2024 12:08

Service in shops. I really object to scanning my own items and taking off security tabs. Clothes, specifically women's clothes - quite a lot of cheap materials.

Hyperion100 · 17/11/2024 12:08

Any food in any restaurant that isn't super high end.

DoubleShotEspresso · 17/11/2024 12:10

Quality and calibre of customer service and staff

Availability of vital medications (total nightmare)

Driving anywhere in a decent timeframe in London

Quailty of fruit and vegetables

Quality, portion sizes (& prices!) of fresh fish

General conduct when out and about (there seems to be so little common courtesy these days).

Minced beef (the crappy bew vacuum packages are foul)

Respect for others and thise less fortunate seems to be inserious decline

Education

SEND provisions both medical and educational

OliviaRodrighost · 17/11/2024 12:11

It would be easier to list things that haven’t gone down in quality. Hmmm. Might have to get back to you on that 😬

Can u not get matey anymore

Is 'matey' a brand?
I was looking through the post to find it excessively friendly 😂

shockeditellyou · 17/11/2024 12:12

John Lewis wanted £16 for “wool” tights yesterday. They were 9% wool. I didn’t buy them.

Also, MN is becoming a clone of Reddit - this exact topic was on one of the U.K. subreddits yesterday.

I buy the fairy liquid 'original' stuff rather than the newfangled 'hint of apple' type stuff. Works fine for me...

I did the same but am now finding the original to be just as poor 🤨

That's interesting, I've always used the original green one, but the last couple of bottles, with a new formula, I found to be not as good. Anyway, I've switched to Bio-D now, it's a bit more expensive, but you need much less.

PuppyMonkey · 17/11/2024 12:14

Most city centres.

Going for a day out shopping used to be such fun but now there are no decent shops and even those that are open never have the size you want and tell you to order online.

GrandHighPoohbah · 17/11/2024 12:14

Cotton clothing from previously high quality shops. It's all so flimsy these days.

People's idea of what constitutes a social commitment. So much flakiness now.

Hateam · 17/11/2024 12:15

Mumsnet

RosesAndHellebores · 17/11/2024 12:16

M&S bras, particularly Wild Bloom that I have been wearing for years. The fabric is poorer and it's just poorer quality all round. They have kept the price down but honestly, I'd rather pay more and have them as they were. It probably extrapolated to lots of other things.

Ooh glad you posted that, I shall try bio d!

George at Asda clothing, always liked it for basics, kidswear and sleepwear etc but this year the quality is shocking!
