To try and find some good teens books that don't push the LGBTQ agenda?

Trying to get some books for my daughter who is in S1, books are either too young or they all have a blurb that alludes to the main character's sexual preferences. Would love it if anyone could recommend something your pre-teens, or young teens are reading that don't include those topics? They already get enough information about it in school and the internet.

Trump's propaganda team were grinding out tens of millions of dollars of propaganda about the appalling threat trans girls present to 'the girls on the sports teams' for weeks before the US elections.

Except according to Newsweek, out of a population of 320 000 000 Americans, it's estimated that there are only about 100 or so transgender athletes in college sports, and that the number is estimated to be even smaller for school sports. "Save Women's Sports, an organization advocating for banning transgender athletes from competing in girls' sports, identified only five transgender athletes competing on girls' teams in school sports for grades K through 12." Out of 17.3 million high school pupils.

So not really an issue - at least not in a material sense, though obviously a huge issue in many mumsnetters heads.

What is an issue in the UK, if you want to talk about actual inequality in sports that actually affects large numbers of girls who play sports, is the vast over representation in elite sports, of athletes who went to fee paying schools. But again, this is mumsnet so we know where that conversation is going to go.

You appear to be ignorant of the context of high school sports for girls in the US.

The trans athletes are competing against girls for university scholarship money. It's a very big deal indeed, and it's not just something Trump manufactured out of nothing.

Those "100 or so" transgender athletes took the scholarship money of "100 or so" girls. A scholarship that offers a full ride, no less.

Middle class American parents invest an enormous amount of time and money in their student athletes, girls and boys alike. For a top high school athlete the reward is an NCAA scholarship, perhaps afterwards a chance at an Olympic team, with the financial rewards that come with that, or the chance to play sport at professional level. At the very least, your dedication to a very demanding training and competition regimen while also achieving academic success makes your resume stand out from the herd.

@mathanxiety

"The OP is looking for literature that doesn't have sex, sexuality, or sexual identity as its central theme"

She didn't really signal that in her OP or the title of the thread.

She specifically wants books that don't acknowledge homosexuality exists as far as the central characters and themes go.

The OP is homophobic. And lots of people on this thread have pandered to this, which is a bit depressing.

None so blind as those who for reasons of their own refuse to read the OP, eh?

At that age series I liked were

The Named - Marianne Curley
Wings - Aprilynne Pike
Wicked Lovely- Melissa Marr
Missing saga - Meg Cabot
Animorphs - K A Applegate
Saddle Club - Bonnie Bryant
Point Horror was a major hit at that age. God I had so many.
Shivers series

One off books I liked there was one called Roscoes Leap which I liked so much I went looking for it as an adult and it took me years to find it as I didn't know the title or author.

Shades Children was good but might be a bit mature for 11.

One about a blind girl that I think was Stephen King. I'll look for it tomorrow as I can't remember the name.

I'm sure I'll think of some more at some point, I was a massive reader that age, got through 15 books a week at least. I have literally hundreds in the loft and those are only the ones I couldn't bear to part with.

It exists in the same way Odin or Ganesh exists. Entirely in a small number of people’s heads.

it’s a belief and most people don’t believe in it.

you can have imaginary fairies if you want. We don’t.

or maybe, instead of treating the OP like she's in a court of law and forensically unpicking her post, we could go with what she has said as the discussion progressed about her DD just not being into fiction about romance / sex / relationships of any kind and wanting to give her time to decide for herself what she wants to read about in that area. This is an online chat forum, not a police interview. We should go with the spirit of the discussion, not nail an OP to the wall for a word or expression that may not have been minutely thought out. Plenty of 11yo are not remotely interested in that area yet, its perfectly normal.

If it was just about romance /relationships in the first place, why specifically mention no LGBT ones?
She said no LGBT sexual preferences.

What an obvious way to say “I’m so easily lead I believe the world is flat”.

gender identity doesn’t exist. Just like the flying spaghetti monster doesn’t.

Trans people exist, whether you like it or not, and regardless of your idea of “family” and “social norms”. Get. Over. It.

I’m saving this very excellent post- thank you for setting it out.
(Note that in response to your detailed facts and reason the pp you were talking to just resorted to shouting and swearing about “who belongs where”.)

gender questioning people, all of whom have experienced a trauma or mental health issue - and have been encouraged by well meaning but quite wrong parts of society - to see that an answer to that is to submit to misogynistic and regressive stereotypes

  • yes.

but:

nobody is born in the wrong body

nobody can change sex

females deserve spaces away from males including sports, health, toilets etc etc.

Being trans has nothing to do with misogynistic and regressive stereotypes and is not the result of “encouragement” from other people (well meaning or otherwise).

It’s still bollocks.
all males should be banned from all sporting competition with females at all levels. No questions, no exceptions.

Bit sad to see how many posters are defending blatant homophobia. OP is talking about sexuality rather than trans issues but because it is mumsnet she is getting support rather than criticism.

Tandora · 20/11/2024 12:39

@GenerativeAIBot You seem to think you know a lot about trans people.

A word of advice- it’s generally not a good idea to assume you know a lot about other people -
especially if you are applying these ideas to groups of people of whom you are not a member , and even more so if the ideas you have about them are strongly negative ones.

Calling them a cult
Saying they want to corrupt people
Saying they are all mentally ill
Saying they are enforcing stereotypes
Ignoring Transmen exist and making it about men invading women's space

You believe in sky fairies. I get it. I don’t believe in gendered identity. I don’t believe there are some things only men can do. I don’t believe in sexism.

transmen, AKA women aren’t a concern to anyone in private spaces because they can’t rape anyone. It’s about having the penis and the strength.

the idea of “trans” is a social contagion as much as self harm is.

everyone who identifies as transgender has multiple other mental health co morbidities. It was only taken out of the DSM through lobbying efforts. I question the motivations of those who did that.

Quote the ACTUAL homophobia.

remember, homophobia would mean denigrating gay people or putting them below straight people. Not saying you want books without LGBTQ relationships in them.

I wouldn’t want them in my kids books, depending on the age of the child. 8 is not the same as 15.

also, LGB are sexualities. TQIA++ - those are not.

Trans people have been around for fifteen years. Before that we just called them cross dressers.
trying to rewrite history has failed.

I reject entirely the concept that the only people who can talk about a thing, are the thing.
