Rachel Reeves lied on her CV was not an “Economist”

1000 replies

Disappointedagain22 · 16/11/2024 11:33

AIBU - it’s OK to lie to get ahead

AINBU - it’s bad RReeves very Publicly lied about her prior work. We are right to feel annoyed by this lie.

saw this headline and am feeling really disappointed. Think Rachel Reeves needs to tell public exactly her job title.
She changed job title from Economist, to “Retail Banking”
An Economist at a Bank, is a clear and specific job, it’s a economic research position. A good experience for her current position.

”Retail Banking” - is not a job title … she could have been doing anything in a branch from Bank Teller, to Branch manager, or working in back office operations putting bank notes in the plastic bags or in HR.

Yeah she was an economist at the BOE. Sure she was. The closest she got was making their tea.

Yes thanks, you misogynist.

It's a bit disappointing that in a forum for women, we have a title falsely claiming that the first female chancellor lied about being an economist. When she clearly didn't. Instead of saying congratulations Rachel Reeves for becoming the first female Chancellor, someone is doubting she is an economist despite her degrees in Oxford and LSE and her working in the Bank of England!

I don’t care if chancellor / RR is man, or woman. Just want CV to reflect actual job.

If a qualified lawyer is delivering Pizza Hut pizzas …. Should their CV say:

Lawyer
Pizza Hut
or
Delivery Person
Pizza Hut

We have already had the "making the tea" witticism.

The quote marks should be around “witticism”. I personally think it’s gross misogyny.

It's a bit disappointing that in a forum for women, we have a title falsely claiming that the first female chancellor lied about being an economist. When she clearly didn't.

Except that's not the case. No one has said she isn't an economist, the question was whether she misrepresented her job title at Halifax (or wherever) on LinkedIn. The fact she changed it suggests she did otherwise she wouldn't have drawn the scrutiny.

I'm leading our female initiatives at work to increase the profile of women in the City. But I can't condone making up incorrect job titles on LinkedIn because I think it's unprofessional whether you're male or female.

You don’t use a CV for a post like Chancellor so it’s a bit moot.
However it wouldn’t be wrong in your example for the person to describe themselves as a lawyer. And Reeves did work as an economist at the BoE. It’s the name of the retail bank she worked at that has changed.

The thread title claims just that.

Thread title says otherwise.

summer555 · 17/11/2024 20:24

No, the OP refers to her time at the Halifax.

Clavinova · 17/11/2024 20:25

poetryandwine · 17/11/2024 20:00

Thank you, @Blossomtoes. He was also Chancellor during a good portion of thecliw growth period I have referenced above.

Well, he must have done something right. When Jeremy Hunt took over the reins, the OBR's forecast was a year-long recession and a drop in GDP of 2% - which clearly didn't happen. When he left office, the UK was the fastest growing economy in the G7.

Appleandoranges · 17/11/2024 20:32

Disappointedagain22, Yes, all those lawyers who are working as delivery drivers in Pizza Hut should definitely put delivery drivers on their cv. But they are very unlikely to be using their legal expertise as delivery drivers. If they were working in the finance or legal department in Pizza Hut, they can still put lawyer, Pizza Hut even though it is not their official job title as they are using their legal expertise. I think it unlikely that Rachel Reeves went from getting economics degrees from Oxford and LSE to making tea at the Bank of England and working as a cashier in a bank (nothing wrong with either making tea or working as a cashier by the way but perhaps a bit unlikely that Rachel Reeves did either of those as jobs). More likely she was using her economics degree in her job in the retail bank, so simply put economist. She felt she used her economics background to do her job and perhaps thought if she put retail banking, people would think she was a cashier as people don't know what all the jobs in retail banking involves. I fear she was right about that one.

But she was an economist at the BoE. Which is still on her LinkedIn. The OP suggests she’s moved all trace of being an economist. It’s misinformation. Or at best, failing to check stuff.

Have you not read any of the points about this on the thread? Surely you're not ignoring any presenting information showing she might not have lied after all.

Marlhmarlol · 17/11/2024 20:36

I am not sure why you assume that because I (dare to) criticise the government I am a Tory supporter. I didn’t vote Tory or Labour in the last election. But then there is a tendency on this site for people to assume that anyone who doesn’t agree with them is ‘right wing’. Which I think says more about them than they understand. Much as there is a tendency for those on the left not to want to, or perhaps they are not able to, actually debate the issues at hand.

I am not clear what point you are trying to make is, but my statement was factually correct. All I want to see is a successful economy, to allow the UK to invest in public services. We were promised this by Starmer and his government, but by the end of the year we will be 10% of the way through their term and there is still no plan has to how growth will be delivered.

So far, the OBR expects growth to be lower, inflation higher, unemployment higher and housebuilding to be lower than before they came into power. It’s not unreasonable to expect them to be able to articulate how they intended to deliver on Starmers goal of the fastest growing economy in the G7 when, during their time in power, we have gone from the fastest growing to the slowest. There have been record drops in the public and private sectors trust in the government, and frustration at the missed opportunity. It’s not unreasonable challenge this is it?

Quite. I totally agree with you @Tryingtokeepgoing

For how many quarters? Out of 14 or 56 quarters of Tory rule?

The thread title clearly says Rachel Reeves lied on her cv and was not an "economist". So anybody doing a cursory look at mumsnet, (which one would have hoped is pro women getting good jobs etc) will think hey, that Rachel Reeves was not even an economist and why on earth is she Chancellor??? Clearly degrees from Oxford, London School of Economists and working as an economist for the Bank of England are not sufficient to label a woman an economist. Also never mind that the men who went before her - no body even cared that they weren't economists. But Rachel Reeves who IS an economist is being criticised for lying and not being an economist. Guido has done good work.

I don't understand your question - Jeremy Hunt was appointed Chancellor in October 2022 - your post was about Jeremy Hunt's time as Chancellor. The OBR forecast I was thinking of is here (Nov 2022) - The economy will shrink by 2% - shouldn't Jeremy Hunt receive credit for averting this?

Perhaps we should question the OBR’s powers of prediction instead. Hunt’s handing out unfunded NI cuts certainly don’t deserve any credit.

This is a terrible analogy.

You don't need to be a trained lawyer to deliver pizza. You do need to be a trained economist to do what Reeves did at HBOS.

All people are doing in the papers is demonstrating that they don't know how a bank works.

Aduvetday · 17/11/2024 21:10

DuncinToffee · 17/11/2024 20:03

More to do with brexit than the budget then?

No. It’s to do with the fact we are a high tax low reward country. Higher rate tax payers pay some of the highest rates in the world and see little return. That and their skills aren’t valued - even at higher pay. Our salaries are low. The Tories started the decline, Labour are accelerating it. People don’t mind going abroad and paying similar taxes. People aren’t trying to avoid tax. What people want is to see something for that tax. We won’t over here because we are dependent on a tiny minority. We also aren’t competitive globally with STEM salaries.

We are an economy which has chosen to have low taxes and high personal allowances for the unskilled which are the majority. That’s fine, until you realise the tax base is too small to fund big state. That means the people with skills leave, generally the UK hasn’t been attractive for many years.

You clearly haven’t understood my lost, never mind my logic.
Are you ready to admit that Reeves did work as an economist at the BoE so is, in fact, an economist, and that the changes she made to her second job don’t reveal what you suggested in your dishonest OP?
