What does this mean?!

Are the Democrats moving away from 'woke' in the wake of last week's results? Is it nothing, is she not an ally anymore? Aibu to wonder what it signals?

How do people not know who AOC is?!

Why would they? There are millions of people on Twitter

I'm just waiting for the Sennedd to change the name of the Menai Bridge, have you seen third person personal pronouns in Welsh?

There's only three categories - masculine singular, feminine singular and plural.

Though there are dialect differences in the spoken versions of the 'he' and 'him' pronoun.

However, the masculine and feminine singular possessive pronouns are the same ('ei') but cause different mutations in the words they refer to.

If I were to put my female/feminine pronouns on Linkedin in Welsh, equivalent to 'she/her', I'd have to put 'hi/hi/ei (aspirate mutation)'.

Incidentally, there is no neuter pronoun equivalent to 'it'. The pronoun traditionally used is feminine e.g. 'Mae hi'n bwrw glaw' = It (in fact she) is raining.

@Coolasfeck To be fair to Andrew Doyle, before he was a presenter he was a teacher, a research fellow, and has a PhD from Oxford. So I'm not sure GB News is the catalyst for any new entry into academia.

No shade on Welsh and I have trouble enough remembering 1st, 2nd, 3rd person in English. I was thinking of the dialects/mutations, how complicated it would be to try to make all Welsh genderists happy, even man/woman, boy/girl I believe can be different North to South. I've always loved that the default in Welsh is 'her'. But mostly I wanted to make a bad pun on 'Men' in Menai 😊

I'll have you know, I am grown up. My body went through puberty and started menstruating and I've given birth to two babies, to prove it....... because, you know, I am a woman.

My adult cousin has never menstruated, I’ll let her know she’s not a woman

u3ername · 15/11/2024 11:15

Can we clarify feminists also can't stand Elon Musk, and do not support the new version of Twitter?
I deleted my account because of all the pro-life and trad family values propaganda. Totally get where CSB are coming from.

(Some people on other sm platforms put JK Rowling and EM in the same category - that's ridiculous, isn't it?)

No idea who AOC but do think there's been a slow trend of dropping self identified pronouns for a while now.

Actually shocked at how few people know who AOC is.

But why would people not in USA know of her?
I've never heard of her and am pretty sure she's never been featured on BBC news for anything?

Unless you are interested in American politics you wouldn't be aware of her surely?

NigelHarmansNewWife · 15/11/2024 11:35

She's a high profile democratic congresswoman of Puerto Rican descent. Trump has had a pop at her in the past. She's one of the few I've heard of.

Dobest · 15/11/2024 11:42

I am reminded of William McGonagall (poet/tragedian)'s epic account of the Tay Bridge Flounce.

TheKeatingFive · 15/11/2024 11:47

Yeah. Interesting.

Maybe they're leaning ... maybe

Marxism and gender identity theory are at completely odds to one another. It baffles me how many self identified Marxists pick the trans hill to die on

AOC does whatever gets her face and name in the front page. Being moderate does NOT get attention.

Why is it surprising that many non-Americans haven't heard of her? How many Americans have heard of Diane Abbott?

But she hasn't ejaculated either, has she?

That 'but not all females menstruate so they're not women then?' aint the gotcha you think it is.

Edited

I have an American friend who finds Diane Abbott absolutely hysterical in her ability to mis- speak, make huge mistakes with numbers & appear totally incompetent and then blame racism when there is none. Concludes fact she was Corbyn side piece explains a lot.
He also finds Jacob Rees-Mogg amusing.

American like to laugh …

Yes, you do that. And the fact she is in a vanishingly tiny percentage of women who never menstruate makes your 'argument' utterly meaningless.

And obviously the NHS treat women who don't mentruate exactly the same as transwomen who don't mentruate or as men who suddenly experience bleeding from their genitalia Hmm

TheCoolOliveBalonz · 15/11/2024 13:11

I don't understand what it proves that some women don't menstruate? Because very very rarely a woman never menstruate, suddenly Eddie Izzard is a woman? My brain fails to compute.

Theyre trying to pull off a dumb sleight of hand. It is obviously pure nonsense.

nothing like motherhood to make you a TERF 😉

True true. You can't be pregnant unless you're a Truth Exposing Radical Feminist!

Agree. It's when people who aren't very good at thinking think they're being clever. As I get older, my tolerance for the Hard of Thinking (never very high) gets less and less.

The fact that a tiny fraction of physical women don't menstruate, have a uterus......whatever, doesn't mean the billions that do have to suffer this arrant nonsense.

Snorlaxo · 15/11/2024 16:02

I’ve heard of AOC because she is often named on social media when right wing people are trying to make a point about left wing people. It’s the US equivalent of right wing people using Jeremy Corbyn’s name to be insulting about left wing people except that AOC is young, female and not white which makes her more unusual amongst the stereotype of white and old men. I’ve heard Trump name her too and call her AOC rather than her first or last name as is more customary here in the UK.

I am interested in the comments on SM as it tends to be news that mainstream outlets don’t mention so I have picked up names like Marjorie Taylor Greene (often called MTG), Lauren Boebert, Bernie Sanders etc I also pick up on repeated points (possibly by bots) like Hunter Biden’s laptop, Hillary’s private email server… because I’m nosey and think that sort of person is voting and shaping elections more than normal media reporting discusses. I don’t believe in stuff like QAnon btw but I find it interesting that people believe and post stuff on it although I accept could be bots. I didn’t see much commenting on Q this election but maybe that’s me.

Somebody mentioned RFK Jr earlier. I saw him make a video where he said that one of his first jobs was to get rid of harmful ingredients in food that other countries ban because those ingredients keep Americans chronically sick. If he’s serious then that is excellent news for America’s future. I don’t agree with everything that he says eg vaccines but he is right about that issue.
