What does this mean?!

Are the Democrats moving away from 'woke' in the wake of last week's results? Is it nothing, is she not an ally anymore? Aibu to wonder what it signals?

OP posts:

That's a shame for you, failing to see why she would be famous outside of the US. 😅 Obviously you weren't up to date on current affairs in 2019!

The general election? I was involved in local campaigning and stayed very current thank you very much. Not sure what it has to do with AOC though.

Reading about her she basically seems to be an American version of Dennis Skinner. Who I’m sure no one outside of the U.K. will have heard of.

IdylicDay · 15/11/2024 09:22

If OP had written the name out in full, like you would anyone else, (you don't use initials for anyone else), we could have googled her name. AOC could mean anything. AOC in Australia means Australian Olympic Committee, and since before Sydney 2000, and now with the Brisbane 2032 games, the term AOC is said and written everywhere. So you gotta understand that AOC could stand for any friggin thing depending on where the poster is.

Btw I googled her and she's really just known for being famous but for nothing much really. She's a non-player in politics or the world stage, so not sure why anyone would think she'd be known. I follow politics closely including American politics and hadn't really heard of her.

Pussycat22 · 15/11/2024 09:25

Bonkers.

Because, as I just said, "She was one of the most famous politicians in the world a few years ago."

Well given that Americans have a 'world series' in basketball which does not include any teams from any other country in the world, I would say that she may have been famous in the 'world' that is America.
Small print: Other countries are available for sports, travelling to and living in

If you're posting here you can clearly use the internet and look up who AOC is if you don't know.

First result when I googled was Association of Colleges. I was still none the wiser

The Clifton Suspension Bridge has left X

Now that’s just a bridge too far.

I wonder if the one over the River Kwai is going to wade in on this?

LostittoBostik · 15/11/2024 08:16

Actually shocked at how few people know who AOC is.

You are shocked that a site comprising predominantly British people do not know an American politician?
When most of America doesn't realise people and countries exists outside the USA?

Thoughts and prayers for the Forth Rail Bridge, stuck on X because it cantilever.

CautiousLurker1 · 15/11/2024 09:37

Am thinking I must follow US politics more than most because I absolutely knew who she was - the youngest women ever voted to congress in 2018 who also unseated an established republican in doing so. She worked in a bar so was known for her street smarts, therefore, and was popular for being able to connect with the ordinary people in her constituency.

The ‘AOC’ thing followed very quickly because in US politics they like initials, eg RBG for Ruth Baden Ginsburg the incredible woman judge who died recently, and even dates back to JFK. It has particular traction in SM where people have character counts so in the Twittersphere she has been AOC for years and many famous people are reduced to three letters (JKR for example) to the extent that it almost becomes a brand.

That said, given this is a UK dominated site, even though the post is about US politics and references TwiX, had I been the OP I would likely have referred to her in her full name in first post. But it’s not really a big deal as most people got there after a 2 second google…

Is this like Kemi Badenoch suddenly becoming 'working class' because she did a stint in McDonalds?!!
Working in a bar doesn't necessarily give you 'street-smarts'

JohnBinary · 14/11/2024 21:56

How do people not know who AOC is?!

No idea and even googling her I don’t recognise her at all.

Just did a quick straw poll on my office - one person had vaguely heard of her, everyone else just looked blank.

Most people here really have very little interest in US politics other than the headlines.

Coolasfeck · 15/11/2024 05:42

Why is there such a fixation on ‘woke’ in some quarters. Is a Democrats pronouns on X really a pressing issue?

I’ve also seen that a GB News presenter (Andrew Doyle) has taken up a position teaching on the dangers of ‘woke’ at a university in Florida. There’s a lot of money in telling about ‘woke’.

There are also posts about ‘the left’ and how bad they are. It’s an obsession. I hardly ever see threads started on the ‘anti-woke’ or ‘the right’ for some reason.

Meanwhile back in real life, Robert F Kennedy the vaccine denier, has been put in charge of healthcare (so welcome back long since gone diseases), Musk has been put in charge of efficiency and wants people to work for him for free on his plan to fire much of the state, in addition Matt Geatz who gave a 17 year old girl drugs, trafficked her across state lines to take to sex parties and admitted to drugging other women has been picked as Attorney General. A woman (can’t recall name) who’s been long suspected as being a Russian asset has also been given a top job.

But yes AOCs pronouns on X are the issue of the day according to the self styled ‘concerned moral majority’ .

You sound like you've swallowed a bag of cliches. 🙄

The self styled 'moral majority' are people like AOC and yourself. There are endless thread on here about 'the right' and 'the far right' and RFK Jnr is not a vaccine denier.

If you are concerned about misinformation you probably need to snitch on yourself because you're spreading it.

timenowplease · 15/11/2024 09:57

Wasn't it AOC who got busted with multiple sock puppet accounts on Twitter which she used to harass and bully people?

More likely avoiding nasty threats from Musk's bullies. Hope you and all the others happy with this are pleased with the direction of travel. Until they (crossed fingers) come after you.
God forbid anyone make a choice in how they refer to themsleves. Get into lockstep with the Right. Or else.

Probably.

The media coverage of the time expressly reported on her ‘streets smarts’ and being able to connect with people in a ‘real way’ because, having waitressed and worked in a bar, she had to deal with difficult people from all walks of life. The media. Not my own personal conclusion as, not having ever met the woman, I have no idea whether she actually has them.

I suspect it was overplayed as, although she too like Kemi, is the daughter of first generation immigrants and raised in the Bronx, her father was an architect and she went to Boston University. But that is less relatable as a Bernie Sanders protégée, I guess, than a PT job in a bar 🤷🏻‍♀️

You are being unreasonable to assume many of us have a clue who AOC is.

How do people not know who AOC is?!

I just nodded along, assuming she/they is some sort of singer and that sooner or later she/ they will appear on Graham Norton for me to none the wiser about her/them.

Because that is always happening. I can’t keep up.

lcakethereforeIam · 15/11/2024 10:31

I'm just waiting for the Sennedd to change the name of the Menai Bridge, have you seen third person personal pronouns in Welsh?

Oh sorry. I must have missed the news that Clifton Suspension Bridge came out as trans.

What were it's pronouns? Are you one of the trolls that live underneath?

I must admit that I stole that one off X.

I’m waiting to see what other Clifton Bridge flounce puns pop up, but the suspension is killing me.

No idea who AOC was until this thread.

Cracking up that the CSB is woke 😂

Arraminta · 15/11/2024 10:52

Thank God the tide is turning and we're seeing the return to common sense and being sensible. My DDs are early twenties and they and their friends are utterly fed up of pandering to this pronoun nonsense (pronounsense, as I call it) all the way through university.

They realised that the people peddling their pronouns do so, in the mistaken belief that it gives them an actual, you know, personality.

Bortand · 14/11/2024 22:38

Deeply embarrassed for the transphobes who think they’re being funny on this thread. Grow up

I'll have you know, I am grown up. My body went through puberty and started menstruating and I've given birth to two babies, to prove it....... because, you know, I am a woman.
