Why are people boycotting Boots? Are you?

For full disclosure I haven't seen the advert yet, but I'll probably end up searching for it if I don't come across it naturally during viewing in the next few days.

I've seen the #boycottboots and have worked out it's to do with their new Christmas ad. What's the issue? Are you boycotting Boots or do you think people are overreacting?

Randomly choosing the poll options simply because as stated I've not seen the ad so I don't currently have an opinion either way

YABU I'm boycotting
YANBU it's an overreaction

I'm a pretty GC feminist and I can't see a problem with the advert, it's sensitively and cleverly made to market make up to anyone who uses it

Edited

Same here. I don't have any issue with it.

Okay I dont think you even know what a muslim is. As i said before, Im talking about actual practicing muslims not just british asians

But 99% Muslims dont celebrate Christmas, and why should they? its a Christian holiday. Sure some stuff like the trees and santa are pagan but again, muslims do not observe this.
just like our family dont celebrate Eid or Ramadan.

Ah yes, because jesus doesn’t feature in islam…

Differentstarts · 14/11/2024 19:40

Have you thought this was a genius marketing ploy from boots as now iv gone to watch the advert. Is anyone actually upset about this advert or has boots started a rumour to get everyone watching it and talking about it.

Simonjt · 14/11/2024 19:40

CowboyJoanna · 14/11/2024 19:34

Most muslims in the UK are not british

Are they not? Can you share the ONS link?

Birdscratch · 14/11/2024 19:40

I understand the concept of the John Lewis ad but they didn’t make it work. I’d have sent it back for a re-edit.

StandingSideBySide · 14/11/2024 19:41

TooBigForMyBoots · 14/11/2024 19:32

But we're talking about the UK here. This is a UK based site, the Ads we're talking about are UK Ads and the Muslims we're talking to are UK Muslims.

Stop making up statistics and presenting them as fact.

It is haram for Muslims to celebrate Christmas and frowned upon although like most things many will anyway

Gloriia · 14/11/2024 19:39

The John Lewis one is terrible! Not remotely poignant like the snowman, the hibernating bear or the little dragon one. Just a woman running round a shop. No drag queen's though so that is a bonus.

And she's white.

louisianachild · 14/11/2024 19:41

I accidentally voted wrong! The whole backlash is ridiculous

Littlemissgobby · 14/11/2024 19:42

StarSlinger · 14/11/2024 19:41

And she's white.

Seriously, I literally cannot believe that people like you are willing to put a comment like that on a forum like this. Why does that even bother you? Why does somebody being white even bother you?

justasking111 · 14/11/2024 19:42

I'm boycotting boots because they're so expensive now. Went to order last night no buy 3 pay for two. The foundation, mascara and shampoo I like were a lot cheaper on Amazon . So I ordered from there.

I know Walgreens are trying to sell Boots with little success, but that's their problem I'm not propping them up.

StarSlinger · 14/11/2024 19:41

Yes. What's your point? It's a terrible advert don't you think, not one crumb of sentimentality. The bear was my favourite.

Seriously, I was being sarcastic.

I'm surprised they haven't gone the same way as Debenhams. Toiletries are just so much cheaper elsewhere nowadays.

My point is, no boycotts for the nice MC white JL advert.

@CowboyJoanna
51% of Englands and Wales Muslim population ( no figures for elsewhere I’m afraid ) in the 2021 census were born in the UK
49% born outside the UK

Rachel757677 · 14/11/2024 18:47

I've just seen it. Obviously it's a shit Christmas ad that makes the mistake of trying to push an agenda instead of being Christmassy. However, I am not offended by it, and I certainly not going to boycott Boots because of it. It's just a crap advert...

Same. It's a rubbish ad but I'm still going to shop in Boots. Especially as I've accumulated quite a few points on my Boots card!

ParanormalNorman · 14/11/2024 19:47

And if a white actress said it about a black family? You must know that would be a completely different story.

If she said it about a black family that held the most elevated positions in the country, whose relations had married into and spawned every single upper class family in the country and whose ancestors had dictated morals, laws and religious rights and wrongs for centuries? Yes, that mythical world would be very different indeed. When talking about the Royal family you cannot simply swap race to illustrate a point - because doing so changes the whole history of the country and leaves us in a very alternative reality.

Personally, Boots featuring diversity in their adverts, including a number of drag queens makes sense. They wear a heck of a lot of makeup and Boots sells makeup. I suspect they would prefer their loyal business to some random mners' husband, to be honest. (in reference to a different pp).

Exasperateddonut · 14/11/2024 19:47

I don’t watch tv with adverts so not seen it. But I did need paracetamol. Do people really boycott shops because of adverts?

ThisIsSockward · 14/11/2024 19:48

I don't like drag or they/them nonsense, and it doesn't make me feel Christmas-y at all, but it wouldn't affect whether or not I'd shop there. I rarely bother with make-up beyond powder, so I suppose I'm not the target audience.

StandingSideBySide · 14/11/2024 19:49

StarSlinger · 14/11/2024 19:44

Seriously, I was being sarcastic.

So why did you make the 19:45 comment if it was meant to be sarcasm

Angrywife · 14/11/2024 19:49

The issue isn't that people are upset there are black people in the advert, but that the main actress herself is perceived to be a racist.

Also many consider it wrong that they use gender neutral pronouns for the child/children.

I haven't seen it but have seen a lot of arguments about it

How on earth is it not Christmassy? It literally features Mr and Mrs Claus and elves in the workshop. Of course its pushing an agenda (selling make-up)... It's an ad

Haggia · 14/11/2024 19:49

Inauthentic · 14/11/2024 19:07

Apparently this is from Britain First " Boots has just launched a sickeningly woke Christmas advert starring the notoriously anti-white racist actress ‘Adjoa Andoh’ (who described the British Royal Family as ‘Terribly White’) as ‘Mrs Claus’.
“The advert also promotes ‘They/Them’ transgender pronouns, a concept created by far-left extremist LGBT movements in an attempt to undermine traditional gender norms, biological sex and the traditional Christian family.

Santa Claus is the only heterosexual white man in the whole advert and he is deliberately portrayed as a lazy good-for-nothing

He is. Only works one night a year, lazy sod.

BleekHaus · 14/11/2024 19:50

The people calling for a boycott are very much the same people criticising “two tier Kier” for sending people to prison for using “hurty words” on Twitter (or inciting violence as everyone else calls it). Yet they seem very triggered by an actress using “hurty words”, to the extent we’re being asked to boycott shops. Almost like they, themselves, are massive snowflakes.

There is no child in the advert I watched
